Forget radiology. Every month, more and more rad sm - another MT

goes to front-end speech recognition and the radiology MT is fast becoming a fish out of water.

At my company, we used to have many large rad accounts and now the rad MTs spend about 20% of their time typing rad and the rest doing acute care because there is not enough rad work. The accounts we had did not go to other companies - they went with front-end speech and the MT isn't involved at all.

Thats so sad. I used to do rad. for over 20 yrs. - It was always my job-security. (nm)

I work on site and we have more work than we can manage. We've had 2 unsuccessful attempts at VR, the doctors wouldn't use it and they brought more MTs on board. We're supposed to get another new VR system soon, it remains to be seen what will happen to the MTs. I think some MTSOs still hire transcriptionists to edit radiology but those jobs are becoming scarce.
It always surprises me that Radiology is so big on - VR, especially since radiologists are - sm

right up there with obstetricians in their risk for a lawsuit. If I were I radiologist, I wouldn't want any part of VR or offshored transcription. I wouldn't even want my work outsourced to an MTSO - I'd want it inhouse, where the MTs and I had direct communication.
That is what we continue to hope for! - No message - Anonymous

A long time ago I used to work for a radiologist, - and he told me - s/msg

"Medical transcriptionists are our first line of defense against lawsuits."

Truer words were never spoken.
The problem is the front-end speech rec does not require SM - another MT

an MT at all. There is no editing to be done by the MT. The physician does it. The only physicians who have the luxury of accepting or rejecting speech are the ones who are with small health systems or independent facilities.

Even many of the huge teleradiology companies use front-end speech for their work. No more farming it out. No MT involved at all.
and thus producing trash! - MTangel

I work for an imaging center who used one of those outsourced places when he was on vacation. The errors were enough to scare us into trying to just hire a physician to come in and read next time our doc was out and just let the MTs in-house transcribe. After seeing the poor work that VR did, I think that our facility was sold on the idea to keep MTs in-house and not think about VR!

Acute Care?
Sep 23, 2014

As a relative newbie MT, I'm not certain what "acute care" means. Does it mean basically all reports that are from doctors in the hospital setting? That is, would any hospital operative note, hospital progress note, and all discharge summaries be considered "acute care"? I know a clinic note is basically a note by an outpatient doctor, right? And it's basically about more minor medical problems albeit could be chronic rather than "acute." ...
