Clinic Work versus Acute Care - Just Curious

Posted: Dec 04, 2010

Hi, everyone,

I wondered if you would be willing to offer your opinions on clinic transcription versus acute care transcription.  Which do you prefer?  What are the pros and cons of each?  Which has better schedule arrangements/working hours?  Anything you would like to offer is appreciated.

Thanks!

Be prepared to do both and take your best job offer, clinic or acute care - My opinion

It's just best to be able to do it all. Then you have more choices. That's why you see so many people in trouble right now because they have limited their training or experience and have fewer options. The more skills and knowledge you have, the more options you have.

I have done both and at one time I loved acute care and wouldn't even consider doing clinic notes, BUT, with ESLs, voice and all of the hoops you have to jump through, I am now doing clinic notes and love it. I just sit and transcribe, no muss, no fuss. I hated to give up acute care, but just couldn't stand it any longer. I do feel AC puts you head and shoulders above the crowd though. Just doing strictly cinic notes won't cut it when you apply. They want all kinds of experience and I do miss hospital dictation, but I miss what it used to be, not the way it is now.

I do both now. First job is acute care. Second job is clinic work. I find clinic work is the money maker because of the repetition (and smaller pool of docs) and with macros, it is a breeze compared to acute care, ESL, VR, account specifics and 200 different docs.

If you're new to the profession, if you can get acute care first, I'd do that. The reason is that you are exposed to many specialities and report types. It gives you the best experience in my opinion. I started out in a hospital and I now work in an imaging center. Like the previous poster, I prefer clinic work because it's just so easier and the schedule is better. No nights or weekends. But I would not have had the opportunity to get that job if not for the preparation acute care gave me.

Thank you all for the info and opinions posted. I completely agree that acute care experience is a must in this business. I know that a whole world of opportunity opened to me in terms of job offerings after I became experienced in acute care. I just prefer clinic work and wondered if others might feel the same and also if there are scores of jobs available in clinic work. I know that I see much more job availability in acute care, but I just don't like it as much. Both of my jobs are in acute care, and I'm looking for clinic work.

Acute Care?
Sep 23, 2014

As a relative newbie MT, I'm not certain what "acute care" means. Does it mean basically all reports that are from doctors in the hospital setting? That is, would any hospital operative note, hospital progress note, and all discharge summaries be considered "acute care"? I know a clinic note is basically a note by an outpatient doctor, right? And it's basically about more minor medical problems albeit could be chronic rather than "acute." ...

CLINIC VERSUS HOSPITAL TRANSCRIPTION
