How do you get acute care experience? - Jana

I would love to know how you get acute care experience when no one will give you the opportunity without it. I am good at what I do and work hard. I am very frustrated because my current job went to voice recognition (which I am sure everyone is on that boat with me). My pay has been cut in half and I am looking for extra work but no one will look at me without acute care experience. Does anyone have any suggestion?

answering the same question. Go to the posts for 8-1-2012 way at the bottom of the page and look for the posts by Old Anon. Short of finding an in-house hospital job where you could do OJT on Ops would be self-instruction (see my pasts below). In-house jobs are rare, as a lot of hospitals have outsourced already and/or as MTs leave/retire, they are not replacing them and partially outsourcing. That's what my hospital did last fall. You may have to invest in yourself and do this on your own. Don't spin your wheels and wish and hope you can find a company who will let you learn on the job. Most companies want you to be able to hit the ground running and don't want to do much hand holding. Getting some background on your own may give you a better chance of getting a job.

If you show you are a very dedicated and meticulous worker, somebody will always be willing to give you a chance. I landed an acute care position with just 6 months transcription experience total (no acute care), beating out over 300 applicants despite the fact the job position required at least 5 years of experience. If you are ever given the opportunity to transcribe acute care or operative reports, the experience is invaluable. I started in operative reports, worked down to office transcription, and back into OPs. Try some of the smaller MTSOs.

I am looking for work, have 3+ years experience in different clinics (family practice, OB/GYN, ortho, PT, etc...) but no acute care experience.....since I have no acute care experience I cannot find work! This is so darn frustrating. As a relative newbie MT, I'm not certain what "acute care" means. Does it mean basically all reports that are from doctors in the hospital setting? That is, would any hospital operative note, hospital progress note, and all discharge summaries be considered "acute care"? I know a clinic note is basically a note by an outpatient doctor, right? Does anyone know why Accentus Acute Care seems to always have the same job ad hiring for acute care MTs that pays a sign-on bonus? It seems as though either they never fill these positions or they are so difficult nobody stays.
