Lost my coding job to EMR - sm

Posted: Mar 15, 2012

Hospital I work for just switched over to Epic.  I was informed this week that I will be laid off as a coder - I am no longer needed.  Instead, they will hire coders as data analysts, document improvement specialists and managers.  But, in order to get these jobs I need a degree.  I do not have a degree, just my CCS as well sa my CPC.  I feel like crying and giving up on this career.  First as a laid of MT to a laid off coder.  I don't want to be in this buisness anymore.  Think I'll go back to school to be a dental hygienist or something.  Ughh

Unless you live under a rock - sm

If you are being up front about your credentials and unless you live under a rock somewhere, there are plenty of jobs for credentialed coders. There is more to your story than you are telling us.

Glad someone else saw it. - Agree

Agree.

What I don't understand is . . . - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
What I don't understand about the people on this board is their expectation that when they get a job it will stay the same forever and that they don't have to learn anything ever again.

Below, everyone has emphasized the need to grow and change. We said coding is changing. Several posts outlined suggestions to learn coding and leverage that into a degree program.

Look at what your post said. Three job categories that are higher than coding were offered to you. They are offering BETTER JOBS. How is that being "laid off?"

If you do not have a degree, GET ONE.

Really, look at what you said. You complain that you have no degree, but in the next breath say that you think you will go to school to be a dental assistant . . . which requires a degree.

A couple of things are not adding up here. One is that very few laid-off MTs have had time yet to learn coding, get two certifications and become established in a hospital coding job. How did you do it so fast? The other is that the exact same jobs we mention as possibile growth jobs were offered to you by your hospital. Interestingly, none of the possible alternatives that we did NOT mention here were offered. What an interesting coincidence.

The third thing is how fast Jan2 swooped in to say she told us so and give Andrews an unnecessary trashing.

I think it is all suspicious, but if it happened I hope you can get over the surprise quickly and get on with what you should have been doing all along.

I never recommend that anyone stop advancing their education. I do not see that learning coding at Andrews could stop that process and I speak as someone who completed that program and DID leverage it into an HIM degree. My employer paid for most of it, so maybe yours will, too.

My first reaction was that it may not have been "laid" off at all - My Thoughts

It may be a matter of having just lost a job because it wasn't a good fit for you. Pick yourself up and go do something that is. We have no way to know if you got fired for (whatever) or not. Your message doesn't make sense though, so my own advice to you is do something you are good at. This apparently wasn't it. Don't waste time moping around about it. Find something and be successful. Wish you the best in a new career that fits your skills, your work ethics, your character, and your personality. Once you get that new and different kind of work, give it your best!

It's possible that administrative work is not your best thing - Please see message

You know, it's just possible that you are better suited for hands-on patient care. Some people are. I can think of dozens of people I know who can't make it doing anything related to business or clerical or administrative, but they are excellent doing patient care.

That's what I would recommend anyway after reading what you have written and how you have written (phrased) it.

If you got laid off collect UE and even get some assistance in retraining in something.

Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

NEW IC LOST AT SEA - Please Help - Sm
Jul 22, 2010

I need advice.  I have just recently gone from employee (for over 35 years) to independent contractor.  This has probably been asked or discussed before, but I never paid any attention to the discussions as it never pertained to me; now I wish I had read the posts.  I feel lost here.  I was hired in the usual manner, and told what my line rate would be.  I understand the part about no taxes taken out, no benefits, etc.  I was also told what hours/days they need ...

I Did My Best And Still Lost The Job
Mar 21, 2012

I trained for 5 days and was called today and told I was terminated. No explanation but their instructions on page breaks sucked and I had off and on problems with them. They sent a video to watch and and would not play on my computer and I told them about it. All they did was send it to me again and still didn't work. These companies are all about greed and do not want to take time to really train someone who really wants to learn their job. ...

Just Lost My Job To EMR

I just received an email that was addressed to us ladies stating that as of Friday this week, we are not needed anymore because all doctors in a certain place are switching to EMR. Lost Job To EMR
Aug 16, 2012

After 14 years of transcribing for a medical practice, suddenly, without notice, I was "dumped."  My client implimented the required EHR mandated by President Obama.  I guess I was somewhat naive in not seeing this coming, but I assumed transcribed documents by a "real person" would still be wanted by my client.  Now I find myself at age 57 without work.  My next step is to inquire about verbatim transcription, but the idea of not correcting improper grammar and using "yeah" ...

Just heard today my local town's clinic will be going to EMR in September so those MTs will be losing their job (we are only 2000 people but the clinic is going EMR), another town 125 from me with about 100 MTs have just lost their jobs and a bigger town from there has lost about 100 MTs because of EMR.  These are rural America and not big hospitals by any means compared to some of the bigger cities in the country.  This is just not right and so, so, so sad.  I also jus ...

This lost accounts business is b.s. They have been pushing overtime in QA for a long time because they needed people and now they have the nerve to lay people off. Nice way to do business. Just Lost Our Jobs

Well it was bound to happen. Our doctors have gone with VR 360 and we have about a month to "get out" basically. Yep us five ladies have been evicted. Some have been there 20+ years. It was only a matter of time I guess. Get this..the department head started the meeting with a prayer (probably praying we wouldn't kick his butt) and then at the end they handed us employee assistance brochures for counseling services. HA!  I guess I should be happy they gave a notice but it was like "wel ...

Query About Those Who Have Lost The
Jan 06, 2014

It is quite a shock the first pay check? I have always made it - lost the QA one but that one always seemed to be half tax anyway, so did not mind so much, but now that will be $100 (typically was my production bonus) less for me a week and also no incentive whatsoever to type more per line OR any more at all. I am certainly NOT going to spend 3 months trying desperately to get "back on top" and get the production bonus again. It just seems so arbitrary, and the errors have been ramped up, both ...

Coding School - Fate Of Coding Due To EMR
Apr 10, 2012

Wondering if there are any coders out there who can give me an idea of the fate of coding due to the EMR. Are there still coding jobs out there? Would it be wise to attend school for coding at this point or do you think it will be lost to the EMR eventually? Do I Need To Take An Actual Coding Course To Learn Coding?

? About Lost Reports/lines
Oct 25, 2009

I just recently started with a company that I am overall happy with, but they seem to have a lot of errors with their computer program and we lose reports.  My concern is that we get absolutely no compensation for these lost reports and are just basically told "so sorry; it doesn't happen often."  I just typed a 3 page report that was just lost and have been on the phone on hold with the Help Desk for 30 minutes and for this almost hour I will not be compensated.  My old comp ...
