more mt jobs lost to EMR - so sad

Just heard today my local town's clinic will be going to EMR in September so those MTs will be losing their job (we are only 2000 people but the clinic is going EMR), another town 125 from me with about 100 MTs have just lost their jobs and a bigger town from there has lost about 100 MTs because of EMR. These are rural America and not big hospitals by any means compared to some of the bigger cities in the country. This is just not right and so, so, so sad.

I also just found out that June 15 we are not going to be paid for spaces anymore. But the boss said that there will be no real change in pay check and the "no spaces" has been considered already (how could it be considered already when the hospitals just now renewed contracts but changed to no spaces), yet we will not have our line rate increased.

Cannot understand why ANYONE would ever pick this profession, and yet there are so many requests on here everyday for help picking out good schools. And yet some MTs are telling of their windfall in this lucrative business. Just does not add IMHO.

Thanks for letting me vent. I went to the 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. schedule so I could be sure of having steady work, but I just cannot get used to this schedule, and am making myself ill for lack of sleep. Just not cut out for this anymore I guess. But what else is there?

Here are the facts the way I see them.

-Some jobs are being lost to EHR or SR.
-Some MTSOs are fighting for their lives and cutting costs any way they can.
-Some MTs are doing really well.
-People still look at all of their career options and choose MT.
-Some MTs are 'burned out' or otherwise not cut out for medical transcription work.
-The job economy is really bad overall.
-There aren't many options left.
-MT still has some real advantages for those who have to work at home, want to save money on gas, car repair/maintenance, work clothes/lunches, etc.
-The bottom line conclusion differs from person to person.

You said it well. I hope you find the work you need.

I wonder if things will get better in our country or if we are stuck with all of this job failure and negativity forever. Our job options have pretty much been taken away from us in all career fields. Nobody seems to like to work anymore. Is it the Generation Y thing where we are told that the Generation X-ers and Y'ers don't respect anything or anybody and are proud of being disloyal to their employer? That may be part of it. That seems to be what is spreading over the few American jobs we have left. The people who have them don't seem to be grateful for them. Just thinking. I don't know the answers.

Not everyone who does transcription works at home, or wants to work at home, I have an on-site job. Every facility does not outsource, either. Any employer who lays off an entire transcription department before they know how VR is going to work for them is making a mistake, people are needed to remain as editors. By the way, I am very grateful for my job.

was that some MTs make a complete line or three, for that matter, by keeping the space bar pressed, like after Dear Dr. or in between paragraphs. I have seen this many a times in samples I received for new accounts or if I pull an old report from the transcription platform.

I can't remember from whom I heard it, but it was a manager or TL. Apparently, more than 1 MT was caught padding his/her lines by holding down the space bar between headings and for 2-3 self-appointed "bonus" lines at the end of the report, too.

For those of us whose minds don't run in "cheating" mode, we'd never think to do anything like this, much less devise a plan to put it into play, but I guess some MTs just have way too much time on their hands.

according to the brochure I just received from my local community college. Where the heck did they come up with that???? NEW MT's start at over $37K with 6 months training?

I'm going to call them and ask them the source of their information. How DARE a school supported by our state tax dollars put out crap like that! That is misleading the public that pays their bills. Matchbook schools are one thing, but this is a tax-supported institution.

Most community colleges are designed and promoted by people who don't know anything about MT - My Opinion

From what I've seen from community college MT programs, they leave a lot to be desired. They barely have instruction at all, and the materials are very limited. The time available to learn isn't appropriate either and just when you have taken all the prerequisites, they are likely to cancel the program altogether, leaving students high and dry. Not all of them may be that bad, but over the years I haven't seen many, if any, that were very good. Maybe one or two, and that's doubtful. That's because the instructors were competent, but they didn't have control over the curriculum, length of time for the course, or the materials used in the course apparently.

When I started school about 3 years ago, the local hospital was always hiring MTs. Then they went to EMR a little over a year ago. It sucks for patients, doctors, staff, and MTs. The hospital has also been pushing local clinics to join in the EMR system, I think so they can offset the huge cost of the installation of the EMR system. My doctor refuses to use EMR, but his transcriptionist is a local lady who just by herself can take care of the few local docs who still dictate.

I wanted to work in a hospital setting so badly. Because of health issues and my family all dying over the last few years, being home alone has sucked. Now I have to work at home alone, too, and it's sad.

All the clinics around here have been doing EMR for years as well as some of the hospitals. I'm beyond burnt out too.

After 14 years of transcribing for a medical practice, suddenly, without notice, I was "dumped." My client implimented the required EHR mandated by President Obama. I guess I was somewhat naive in not seeing this coming, but I assumed transcribed documents by a "real person" would still be wanted by my client. Now I find myself at age 57 without work. I have always made it - lost the QA one but that one always seemed to be half tax anyway, so did not mind so much, but now that will be $100 (typically was my production bonus) less for me a week and also no incentive whatsoever to type more per line OR any more at all.
