As an experienced MT, 20+ years, who has been looking for a new position, I am very disconcerted by MTSO's posting available jobs. asking for experience, givng the trite line "compensation based on experience and testing", and then offering insulting rates (7 or 8 cents a line) as an IC AND requiring a schedule! Number one, this equates to about 5 or 6 cents a line after the IC pays expenses and taxes, not anywhere near what I would expect if experience is required! Numer two, if you require a schedule you have an employee not an independent contractor and that person CAN collect unemployment if you let them go, resulting in an investigation. Number three, at least give a range you expect to pay before either of us waste our time with resumes, testing and interviews.

Im an EMPLOYEE, and I wouldnt work for less than 9 cpl. - As an IC, Id want 12+ cpl. nm

[ In Reply To ..]I am sorry you are having such difficulties. I might suggest that you report any MTSO to the IRS who requires a schedule while classifying you as an IC. It is violation of the United States Tax Code and I'll betcha the IRS will be verrrrry interested. Sorry, fellow MTSOs, but you can't have it both way. I say it is time to treat MTs in a decent and fair manner.

I am so sick and tired of these MTSOs taking advantage of us experienced and not so dumb MTs to think that we will stand for it.
Now you will have MTs that say they don't mind working a set schedule, etc. Well that is fine if you decide to work a schedule but it should not be determined by the MTSO. An IC is an IC is an IC - NO SET SHIFTS!!! NO SET LINE QUOTAS!
Thank goodness I have a true IC job online, probably the only company left and no they are not hiring! LOL - sorry but they have enough MTs that are quite happy with their status as a TRUE IC!!!!
Pay rate is another issue, but we all know that those are declining rapidly. Even MTs with private accounts are afraid to raise their rates due to our competition!!!

Your response is definitely not true -- there used to be rules in the distant past that said a clause/phrase whatever was set off by comma/period outside the quotation marks. That is no longer true. My reference is the current Book of Style and many, many, many grammar/punctuation websites. Here's one: http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/quotes.asp. Just open up a novel, newspaper, etc., and see how this is done.
This is something every-every-every transcriptionist should be clear on. Check out the Book of Style.
