A question to MDI-er/Transcenders - Can you spell demoralized?

Posted: Apr 21, 2010

Hi MDIers/now Transcenders:  Curious to know if anyone else is starting to feel as demoralized as I am by the recent highly offensive/rude/appalling brow-beating emails  sent out by (MDI-MD) TLs?

Has anyone noticed the push for total workaholism with even working through funerals?!

Did they all take a class on how to make everyone feel like crap about their job?

A  new ROM mentioned there is a decrease in MLS production that she doesn't understand - I would put out there that it might in part be due to the demoralizing emails that are being sent out - and evidently being sanctioned by ROMs and on up???

Thankfully there are still a number of respectful TLs who also know how to keep emails short, to the point, and factual without rah-rah and without browbeating or threats. Thank goodness for them.

Are there MTs out there who are indeed motivated by threatening emails?  Threats make me want to do the opposite, even though I am someone who always does more than expected.  It seems like basic Managing 101 to me:  the ROMs and the TLs who are respectful will get the help they need, more than not.  The threatening ones will find themselves not getting responses.

I would respectfully suggest that the ROMs and TLs address directly/individually the MLS who are problematic in whatever areas - and leave the rest of us out of those horrible emails, lest they want continued demoralization of their steady bread and butter team members.

Two other suggestions:  If no one responds to requests for help then for goodness sake address the MTs who aren't doing what they say they will (and leave me alone, quit wasting my time, and quit causing me needless wondering about  my own validity as a team member) - and second, bring on more MTs and just trust that the rest of us are all doing as much as we can.  We know there are other MTs in this company who still do not have work. Let us have more than 3 accounts - I hear this is Transcend policy, only 3 accounts.  It is not a good policy, IMO.

ROMs and TLs are paid to do the things they do - cover when there is no coverage, work in the middle of the night, not be paid production pay (ROMs), be available at all hours, get up early, get up late whatever:  If the pay is not worth all of this (it would not be for me!)  - being an MT is always an option.  Hearing about all that they do does not inspire me in the least - as they are being paid for it.  Purposeful guilt trips never bring about the wished for results.

Evidently at Transcend, you are either the browbeater or the browbeat-ee. Pick your line.

I hope someone in the chain of command on up reads my email.  I am a very dediicated MT, and these emails are of serious concern.  I hope someone at the top of Transcend will have the professionalism, the compassion, and the guts to stop the abusive and threatening emails.

MDI-MD and its professionalism is a long ago memory now, a seeming figment of my imagination.  Never thought I would say that.  Dorothy, where are you?  Do you think these emails are okay????

I know, Transcenders will probably say "weldome to our world."  I'm sorry for doubting you.  And yet, I'm still somehow in disbelief that we MTs are faced with this kind of treatment.  Silly me.

Okay, end of rant.  Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

Note to Transcend Employee Advocate who contacted me - Thanks, but...

[ In Reply To ..]
I appreciate being contacted. I expected I would hear from you.

The tone of these TL emails is at issue here, how the MLS are being treated and brow beat. We all dread looking at our email each morning. Then to get what amounts to a multipage email basically letting us know if we don't live and breathe work including working during the funeral of a loved one, we might be seen as less than a good team member?!

It feels I've stepped through the hole into some Alternate Crazy MT World. I want out!

To stop the demoralization of the MTs who do what they say they will is simple: Stop these types of emails. If there are problematic MTs, insist that TLs address THEM, not the rest of us. The ROMs and TLs know exactly who is problematic.

Consider having a team-building conference for the TLs and give guidelines on ways to not treat MLS: It's pretty basic. Threats, implied threats, guilt, negativity - none of it works.

Transcend sanctioning this type of treatment is also the problem.

Though I realize you are an employee advocate, maybe we would all be best served if you take this up the chain.

Thanks for the offer of discussing it personally, but I decline. I would rather see positive action.

I think we are on the same team girl!

Just wondering - why would any properly-managed company - need an employee advocate?

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm speaking here as someone who has occupied the manager's office.

The very existence of this position (employee advocate) within the company is an absolute indication that there is a failure of management. No properly managed company needs a person whose special responsibility is to "troubleshoot" employee problems or concerns. "Advocate" even implies that this person "represents" employees to management (who else?), or "pleads their case" to management. The very thought that any company should need someone to do this is appalling.

Every supervisor sits in a swivel chair. This chair is intended to face toward her employees when it comes to "representing" the expectations of management, and toward management when it comes to "representing" the interests and concerns of her employees. The SUPERVISOR, if she is doing her job properly, should be the communication channel between upper management and the employees, and this must be always be a DUPLEX (two-way) channel! No "employee advocate" is needed, and no one outside the supervisor-employee relationship can ever be as effective an "advocate" (either for management's position or the employee's position) as the supervisor herself. Indeed, this "employee advocate" is almost certain to become the person who is most avoided and/or ignored by management, given the nature of her job! If management doesn't want to hear the employee's side from their supervisors, they SURE don't want to hear about it from an "advocate".

On a more general note, I am disgusted by the descriptions of disdain, discourtesy, disrespect and/or disregard in communications from supervisors and/or managers to their MTs. There is NEVER any excuse for this sort of thing, and it NEVER produces the desired outcome.

I am also in full agreement that when you have a problem that is specific to a particular employee, you do NOT deal with it by showering the whole team with emails. You deal with it on a personal level with that employee - and with them ONLY. Moreover, given the inherent limitations of email (so often prone to misinterpretation), you should ordinarily deal with such problems "in person" (by phone) and use email only to memorialize your discussions with the employee. "I would like to summarize our conversation today and make sure that we are both in agreement about the solutions to the problem we discussed...." etc.

TO TRANSCEND EXECUTIVES: I am available to fix your employee problems. I will accept a six-month position assuming that I have full authority to deal with your issues, whatever that takes, AND I guarantee you'll be a better, more profitable company when I leave.

LOL, and what employee is going to trust an "employee advocate"? - employee

[ In Reply To ..]
This lady is a nice lady, but what employee in their right mind would trust an "employee advocate" who was appointed by management? Not me. Whose interest are they really put there to look out for? Just makes one scratch their head at the wonder of it all. :-)
She helped ME. A lot. - anonymous
[ In Reply To ..]
She knows the ropes, and she knows the players, and if you have a just case, she will help.

One of the last major holidays, I stayed available for my entire shift, but only worked a little over 3 hours. (I am not here to discuss not being paid for seat time. That's a separate issue.) But in those 3+ hours, I transcribed just over 700 lines.

When the holiday bonus didn't appear on my paycheck, I asked my ROM and she said you have to work at least 4 hours to be eligible.

So I wrote to the advocate and told her I'd been penalized for being fast, because if I had done those 700 lines at the company minimum speed of 150 lines per hour, I would have worked well over 4 hours and gotten the bonus.

Well, she went to bat for me with HR, they agreed that it was unfair, and I was paid the holiday bonus retroactively.

In this one case at least, she put my interests ahead of the company's. They could have been hard-nosed about it and said the policy is the policy, but the advocate knew exactly who to talk to, and they bent the policy on my behalf. They were also considering revising the policy to something that's more fair, such as 4 hours or 600 lines, whichever comes first, but I don't know if they've actually done it or not.
That is nice, sm - not trusting
[ In Reply To ..]
That is good to know. I just think in most situations if there is an issue, like between an MT and a supervisor or whatever, it would be hard to believe that if you complained to her that your name doesn't go on a list somewhere, and not a good list. I have spoken to her in general on a call, and she did sound like a genuinely nice person, but I would be afraid to talk to her about much. I am glad you got your pay!
But the problem with that is... - none
[ In Reply To ..]
You have to fight for EVERYTHING with Transcend, and after they have pushed back and pushed back, sometimes they will give in. They will never just do what's right. It gets really old having to fight for your lines, your benefits, and everything else that was promised to you. Everyone I know that has left the company has had to fight for their money or benefits. Which is why I am a FORMER Transcender!
The supervisor should be able to handle anything - like this.
[ In Reply To ..]
I repeat. If a company needs an "employee advocate", they have a failure of management. Period.
Even the best supervisors can drop the ball once in a while. - they are after all human
[ In Reply To ..]
just like the rest of us. Don't tell me YOU have never dropped the ball, not even once. Everybody has.

I agree - with you

[ In Reply To ..]
The ROM who sent that email this morning said she was "angry." Well, that came across quite clearly. If you are giving 100% you aren't giving enough? Give me a break. If your life revolves around your job so much that you take your work with you to a funeral (unless it was for financial necessity), then I feel sorry for you. I do not live and breathe MT. Once upon a time I did. Then came VR and it's crappy pay. Then came the emails yelling at us for not being on the computer and available 24/7 and threatening to send work to India. If you think this kind of garbage inspires me to work more, think again. It inspired me last year to sign up for college again and work on getting out of MT for good.

Me too - none

[ In Reply To ..]
It certainly is not a positive way to start in a new position or make friends. I was rather taken aback by the tone. I agree that this kind of thing should have been addressed on an individual basis to those it is applicable to in the work place. To be grateful to have a job where it is rumored that your pay will be cut is really something to be grateful for, isn't it?

Well-written post, but I am appalled. - sm, also ex-MDIer

[ In Reply To ..]
That kind of treatment hasn't come my way yet. But if it does, I will most certainly take it right straight to the top CEOs attention. If they don't care, then I will at least know it comes with their blessing and knowledge. If no one in management does, be sure that your fellow MTs care about you and how you are treated. Sorry too about the loss/funeral.

It was the ROM that was at the funeral, not the OP. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I got the same email and I felt the same way as the OP. Even though I do what is required by Transcend's own guidelines, and sometimes more, I was left wondering if I was included in the group that made her angry because I wasn't working at 1:00 in the morning after working 18 hours that day. My first impression was: That's why YOU are getting paid salary at a much, much higher rate than what I make and that is why YOU get higher PTO rate and that is why YOU still get paid the same amount no matter how much you type.

When she stated that she was transcribing for free because she doesn't get paid production anymore, she lost total validity with me. Maybe she doesn't get paid by production, but she either receives salary or hourly pay. So she IS paid for working, unlike us when there is no work who do sometimes have to get on the system at 1:00 in the morning to get work when we "flex our time" as they call it. The only difference is that after we sat at the computer for 18 hours, we still may not even make minimum wage.

As to sitting at the computer and not getting paid...... - Angry ex-MDIer

[ In Reply To ..]
I have often wondered what the Labor Board would say about these practices.......
Call the Labor Board, they will back the MT 100% - and also SAVE THAT EMAIL
[ In Reply To ..]
Believe me, the Labor Board would definitely have at least a little something to say to Transcend about all of this.

And just a word to the wise, for those MTs who got this email, be sure to save it. If it is in the company's email system, print out a copy of it. Believe me, it might come in very handy later on down the line if any legal issues arise.

Absolutely she gets paid for anything she does! - Geesh she takes the cake. sm

[ In Reply To ..]
You know what though? SHE is the one typing what she feels are free lines. We work our shifts and go on.

Part of her role to ensure it all gets done so she can just git'er done. LOL

Thanks, I'm glad it isn't pervasive! - None of us deserve it.

[ In Reply To ..]
Right, it was the ROM who mentioned losing someone, not me (thanks for your consideration though).

The pressure was implicit in the email by this ROM that this is what is expected to be a good team member, keep working during the funeral time of your loved one. And, now we are expected to give 250% - she made it clear to any 250%-ers out there, that the email was NOT directed at them. So 100% is not enough anymore.

I hope the TLs who have remained steadfast through the merger in how they interact with us continue to do so, regardless of whatever pressures that may be going on from above. It can't be easy.

It it truly worth the extra money to find yourself treating fellow MTs in this manner? Maybe we all need reminded to do unto others in ALL areas of our lives.

Last word of the day. Karma.

Don't bother with the Transcend CEO - female or male

[ In Reply To ..]
Former TRS/Transcend here: Since we can't name names, you should know the female COO doesn't give a lick; the male CEO is really clueless about operations.

From reading your post, they way the ROM was described - Misery Does Not Love Company

[ In Reply To ..]
sounded much like mine. In fact, I thought it was but I realized the more I read that it was another ROM. That means there are at least two of them working for Transcend that operate in this manner. Except mine also berates. It's worse knowing my ROM is not the only one behaving in this manner. That says to me that the higher ups do know and that is their way of "motivating" us, only like you, it does not work for me.

I'm sorry you are experiencing this. I have worked at Transcend for a few years now and while I was not surprised that new mergers would experience this to some degree, I truly did hope it was not to be to the same extent. It's along the lines of not wishing it on your worst enemy. That is how I feel about Transcend.

Can I spell DEMORALIZED??? You bet! - old MDIer-new Transcender

[ In Reply To ..]
BRAVO!!!!! I hope the powers that be and the powers that "were" read your post. Thank you for putting so beautifully into words what I have been feeling/thinking each time I find an e-mail of this ilk lurking in my inbox.

This aggressive attitude may be nothing new for Transcend, however, it was NEVER the culture of MDIers to communicate in anything less than a respectful, professional manner. This definitely leaves a lot to be desired.

It goes w/o saying that anyone who is having a problem meeting their committment should be addressed INDIVIDUALLY not as a group.

What is the old saying... about getting more flies w/honey than with vinegar.

Only have one thing to say, well maybe 2. lol - demoralized

[ In Reply To ..]
If she doesn't want to type for free and feels like she is working more than what she is getting paid for, join the club.

How many times have we been told that our "work time is only when our fingers are flying across the keyboard in a report."

So every time I'm looking up patient demographics when they don't enter the MR#, looking up physician's names when they're not in the roster, looking up physician's names/addresses when they want copies to doctors not in the roster, checking on the client's websites to see who is a resident and who isn't when he/she isn't in the roster, pouring over the ambiguous readme files when someone in QA wants something one way and somebody else wants it another, sending emails to TLs when Dr. Whoknowsit miscodes a report that is out of TAT because of being miscoded, sending emails to QA because Dr. Smythanwandamarkabathanian has more than 5 blanks in a stat, researching terms and new equipment that aren't in my library, reading the 5 to 6 emails from each TL on different accounts and C and Brookwhatever, and OH YEAH sitting at my computer for 8 hours on a holiday only to get 100 lines -- and only getting 4 cpl for all of this-- I feel I'm already giving 250%. After all, if we're only working when our fingers are typing in a report, I'm already giving all this as extra.

After that scathing email, DON'T YOU DARE ASK ME TO WORK 250% OVER AND ABOVE WHAT YOU'RE ACTUALLY PAYING ME FOR.

Can you spell demoralized? - Tiny Dancer

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I can spell demoralized. I was, too, and that is why I also quit. It would seen that the people I admired the most at MDI morphed into people who care more about money than people. That is their perfect right, but they lost my respect--and my services. I had been with them for several years, but I will not take this kind of treatment. I just won't. We are people, not machines. They seem to have forgotten this, along with the majority of companies in this industry.

Yeah, that e-mail was a real trip, HIGHLY inappropriate - MDI ****

...and for this "manager" to acknowledge that it might be "too much information". I was like, wow - unprofessional doesn't begin to touch these latest antics.

I agree - socmom

[ In Reply To ..]
I totally agree. I used to be a retail manager and I learned right off you do not address a whole group and make them feel bad. You address the one or ones not doing what they are suppose to. Why let things get so out of hand that we are about to lose an account? Why not address it before it got that bad? They then expect us to drop our lives and sit there all day long even if we are the ones who were already working what we were supposed to do. If people are not pulling their weight get rid of them and do not make those of us doing our part and then some feel bad and fear our jobs!!!

Addressing everybody - Ex-Transcend employee

[ In Reply To ..]
I was a Transcend employee for 6 years and got alot of these emails. When I once asked my ROM if I was making these mistakes or not doing enough I was told that they have to send an email to everyone, they cannot single people out. My husband, who works at a Fortune 500 company, also once asked the same thing and was given the same answer. Welcome to the world of political correctness and we do not want to get sued!

I so feel all of you - soc mom

[ In Reply To ..]
I feel all of you. I could not believe it when that email was sent out. I mean first of all we all have bad days and things come up. We have lives. I agree this should not be abused. If people are abusing it address them directly and individually. I am tired of hearing it as I type my fingers off until all hours of the night and day. I cannot give 250% because as a single mom then what would be left for them? I give my more than 100% here lately especially since we have been behind. I have questions left unanswered but I had better read all their emails good or bad. I am totally disgusted but I have to work because I have to have the money. I hope to find something better soon because this is stressing me out beyond belief. I try to remain positive and have for a while but this just has me very upset and concerned.

The Transcend email - Former MDIer

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm pretty sure the actual email cannot be copied/pasted here because of confidentiality, but I'd love to see it if anyone would care to forward me a copy via Email (just the body, no names or anything, not my goal to get ANYONE into trouble). Unfrickinbelievable tactics with that company...you all have my sympathies. I've second-guessed my choice to part company with MDI as soon as the merger was announced and I guess I just want to prove to myself I DID make the right decision.

Anyway, no suit or anything here...just a near-victim that apparently dodged a bullet.

TIA!

I also dodged the bullet - Another former MDIer

[ In Reply To ..]
I am in the same place as you are. I was so burned by MDI keeping us all sitting in front of our computers while they were getting the merge ready (and of course, telling no one what was up) and how much time I lost sitting there with no work for months and nearly went into bankruptcy. So I decided I could not work for people who had become so greedy. I quit when the merge was announced and I am so glad I did. I truly wish the best for all of those who stayed.

See message, another former MDIer - ExMDI

[ In Reply To ..]
Yeah, I caught on really fast when that abundant work (on a wonderful account, I might add) suddenly and inexplicably began to dry up. I literally sat here 24/7 for the first couple of weeks and would notice that one work type that had been totally empty would suddenly have a nice-sized backlog to it, that was 2-3 days old. I knew then something was skeevy, because that work was now clearly out of TAT, was reappearing in the middle of the night, and we were given the "privilege" of catching it back up. Things just suddenly shot up RED FLAG in my eyes, because 2- and 3-day old reports don't just miraculously appear...they'd been SOMEWHERE for transcription, and not to the MTs on that account, that much was obvious.

I had had another FT offer from another company and took it. I figured I could balance it with MDI because of the flexible hours. The work never picked up though, so I just slowly but surely eased my way out. When the merger was announced, it explained everything I had suspected. I'm just thankful I was fortunate enough to have a Plan B already in place and didn't lose out much financially. My heart goes out to those MDIers who were so loyal and believed D, C, et al, who kept reassuring them to hang in there and it would get better.

I'm appalled that my fellow MDIers are being subjected to verbal and written harassment by Transcend. I know the MDI crew as some of the most loyal, conscientious, hard-working, above-and-beyond MTs in the industry, and to see them now reaping the "rewards" of their belief in MDI is really upsetting to me, even though I'm not part of the picture anymore. I think it is out of curiosity's sake I'd love to see the text of that email. I'm having so much difficulty wrapping my brain around just what type of sorry excuse of an employer has the audacity to put such information in writing in an attempt to berate a crew that I have no doubt is doing just as it did for MDI; giving their all and doing their best, just to be blasted by an obviously disgruntled supervisor who seems to think HER life and time is so much more valuable than that of her staff.

Unfrickinbelievable, Transcend. Just unfrickinbelievable.

Good luck to ALL at Transcend subjected to this. I hope it gets better.

The MDI crew (including me) really got the ***** from MDI. We nearly lost our house. We were lied to, told that a big account was coming on in September and there there would be a ton of work. Yeah, right. I believed in D and C for years and gave them them my best, often to my family's detriment. I just do not understand what happened.
And yes, I did finally get another job (thank the good Lord), but not before I was many thousand dollars in the hole.

I never sat around waiting for work with MDI-MD and I still don't. I have plenty of work, I always get/make what I say I will.

I would never sit around trusting ANYONE ANYWHERE if my paycheck could not meet my bills.

Sorry if I seem unsympathetic, but I am amazed that these SAME stories end up being trotted out and D and MDI get blamed.

Who can afford to not find another job?! Come on people.

heard on the news over the last year the unemployment statistics. It is obvious the work is pretty slim pickings due to so many people applying for the same jobs and that goes for the MTs as well. I would assume these people are still in a bad situation, as they have not been able to find another job to replace the one they are working at currently. Most people cannot afford to just up and quit until they have a backup plan. You never know when you may be put in this situation so maybe you should be a little more sympathetic to your fellow MTs. :)
Thanks, RLee (sm) - ExMDIer
[ In Reply To ..]
You are correct, and to further clarify, I was a FT IC with MDI when this all went down. It was NOT a gradual slowdown where the writing was on the wall, so to speak. It literally seemed to happen overnight. While I agree (in theory) that sitting around trusting D, et al, about there being nothing to worry about, I also know that the MTs at MDI were pretty much blindsided when the work just STOPPED. With the snap of a finger. Yes, I got out immediately because I just sense things weren't right, but I have difficulty pointing a finger of blame at my fellow MTs at MDI for believing D and taking her at her word. The entire scenario was pretty freaking shocking and out of the blue.

The MTs were kind of like deer in headlights, no time to react and blinded by the bright lights.

I can't judge them for deciding to trust D and take her at her word, since they'd been able to do in the past.

I have nothing but sympathy for any MT that is hung out to dry in such a manner, be it for MDI, Transcend or any other company.

Thanks, RLee, also for taking the time to validate what other Transcenders are now going through. Although I never became a Transcender, I can still appreciate your revelations.

To MTs working for Transcend--guess what QA has to do? - working for nothing

[ In Reply To ..]
QA has such a huge production quota to make that most of them work OT off the clock because Transcend will not pay for OT. Oh, and Transcend also probably doesn't know that some of their QA have learned to beat the system to where it shows they have done double the work they have actually done.

It is not "mandatory", but if you do not do it, you will be written by your SM asking you to. Same thing. So tiring, day in and day out. Guess I am not a "team player" because I feel I was hired to work 40 hours and any time after that is "My Life Time." ...

Compensation - For Transcenders
Dec 16, 2012

As you transition to Nuance, you will have training jobs going to QC.  This will count against your QC percentage and affect your ability to earn any increased increment in line rate based on your quality.  Please plan ahead carefully for a much lower paycheck and look for another job as hard as you can.  Advise all would-be MTs to look into coding or some other profession entirely.  MTs are living at poverty levels these days and we have to get the word out.  With VR ca ...

PT Transcenders Working Weekends
Jan 17, 2010

I also was concerned about the statement in the handbook indicating that even as PT we had to put in an 8 hour day on the weekend.  I contacted the appropriate person who informed me that the polices in the handbook are directed to Transcend MLSs that are hired “the normal way,” and not to the MDI MLSs who are coming in via the merger.  Nothing will change about the way you schedule yourself as long as our accounts stay compliant with TAT. Like you, I am also going to b ...

Are There Any Transcenders Willing To Share Their Positive Experience?
Jan 29, 2010

Maybe I'm the eternal optimist.  My eyes are wide open, and I've been through previous crappy merger.  Maybe The Worst Case will indeed happen.  I guess it's like MQ, the ship of misery where everyone (including me) stayed and stayed and stayed for numerous reasons.  I finally got off only to find a few yrs later a new merger with Transcend.  BTW, the number I  heard on conferences was that with MDI-MD, Transcend was now with 1200 MLS/TLs.  Just ...

Any Transcenders Out There Not Making Their Minimum Lines?
Jun 14, 2011

I'm just wondering.  I've been with Transcend going on three years now and have never made my minimum lines for part-time.  I've always just worked my shift.  It was never an issue of me hitting my $450 or not.  Now all of a sudden my job is in jeopardy because I'm not hitting it.  I work evenings so I can have help with my kids, but now I'm having to flex days as well to try to meet these lines (horrible ESL and losing a lot of my blank lines ha ...

Former MDI/Transcenders - Oddity On W2 Received Today
Feb 02, 2011

On line 12b there is an amount (which is actually my total income minus the social security and medicare withholding) with a "W" code.   The "W" code is associated with employer contributions to a HSA (which didn't happen).  Anyone else see this on their W2? ...

Question For Transcenders: Lots Of Work?
Oct 22, 2011

I have an interview with Transcend on Monday and have read conflicting stories on this board about whether or not Transcend MTs run out of work.  Some you are saying you never run out; some say they hardly ever run out, and some say running out of work is a problem for them.  What's the story on this?  Also, how is the health insurance?  Thanks for any info you have!  ...

Question For Transcenders & MDIers Re The 8-hour Weekend Day
Nov 30, 2009

Does anyone know if the 8-hour per weekend day requirement stated in the "handbook" online applies to part-time people?  Did anyone ask about this in the conference call?  Do they really expect people to work every single weekend and never have one off unless they schedule it off?  Most places I know even full-time people work say one weekend a month or every other weekend.  I don't know any place that requires someone to commit to one weekend day every single weekend.&n ...
