I feel for you. This field has been in the tubes for over a decade. It's never too late to start fresh in something else. It would be interesting to know if you chose to take advantage of the 401K/IRA benefits available during your working years. If so, you have some of that for retirement.
When I left in 2011 (had tummy troubles from the MT field), I chose to do non-MT work just locally. Retail shop office work. Got me through until retirement SS kicked in at the age of 62. That's the direction I would take if I were you.
As to your family making fun of you, you need a new family. That's just downright mean.
