Market/economic forces, technology, and the fact that we are largely a pink-collar work force had a lot to do with MTs decline. I'm afraid that one comparatively small organization was powerless to do much. Back in the day, not that many MTs were members and some had even never heard of it. They are pretty much disliked now, so they have a snowball's chance in hell of helping. There's no going back now. A lot of people don't seem to realize that it is/was not a union and never was. It is/was a professional organization only with limited influence.
