As far as checking references goes, I am not sure that works very well in our industry. As I told my boss when she was wondering how the last hire went bad, I was able to list about 8 companies I'd worked for in the last 24 years when she hired me, but she would not be able to check a reference at any of them due to staff changes, ownership changes, company buy-outs and take-overs, sheer length of time elapsed, retirements, companies going out of business, etc. Such a fluid environment.
