People lie all the time about why they do what they do.
Perhaps the best known is the people who stay in bad marriages "for the sake of the children." The REALITY is that they are too insecure to make the bold move, live alone, etc. So they reframe it to make themselves look like selfless martyrs.
That is just one example; there are countless others.
In light of the above, I know better than to believe the "reasons" people give for staying in a dead-end career.
None of that matters anyway. The FACT is that people stayed in a dying field for too long. That is not anyone else's fault, and those people are not "victims" of their own poor choices either -- despite how they wish to portray themselves.
