Since when did oriental become.sm - Anon

an ethnic slur. It is NOT, and I'm sure the doc did not mean it in a derogatory way. I have a Chinese friend, born in Hong Kong who came here as a teenager, who has no problem with the term. Ethnic terms do change over time, and it does not necessarily mean that an older term becomes a slur when it is replaced by a more contemporary term. We went from Negro to black to African American. Using the term black is not a slur, and you still see it used. It didn't suddenly become a bad word when it was replaced. It usually takes a while for the more contemporary terms to take hold, maybe even a couple of generations.
