What's the proper form of salutation in a letter to - the provost of a college dept? sm

His full title is Joe Doe, VP of Student Success, but he's actually a provost?

So how would you respectfully and properly (sucking up) address this person in a letter?

Dear Provost Doe? Dear Mr. Doe?

If he has a doctoral degree, use Dear Dr. Doe. If his highest degree is a master's, address him as Dear Mr. Doe.

That's why we're wondering which to use for a salutation, Mr. or Provost?

I've researched and apparently these people like their title used and Mr. is too generic.

Are we (student) on the right track by addressing the letter salutation as Dear Provost Doe?

This isn't asking for a recommendation or anything, it's an email letter to him to register complaints that we're going in to discuss in person with an appointment.

Calling him "Provost" is weird. If you can't determine his degree, Dear Sir is fine.

However, you should be able to find his degrees online. Look carefully at the website.

Do not use "Provost Doe." I worked in a university setting for MANY years as a secretary and we NEVER used that in the salutation of a letter. It is better to do with "Dear Mr., or Dear Sir," if you are unsure if he has an advanced degree or not. If there is some way that you can obtain this information, maybe through a web search, then, "Dear Dr. Doe" would be appropriate.

I worked as an IC transcriptionist in 2013 for approximately 4 months. The company sent a W-9 form and is requesting it be signed and sent back. I did not make a total of $600.00 when I was working for them, which I've understood from others that if you make less than $600.00 you don't need to send in a W-9 form. Can someone clarify on this?
