...high wages the companies have to pay. So, what you're saying is, it's okay to pay someone $35.00 or more per hour to squiggle frosting on a cupcake? Okay, so maybe a machine does it these days, but heck, sorry, if someone can make $35.00 doing something mindless, we should get paid more. But seriously, do you think companies can stay in business like that? Did GM not go out of business because they paid people $40.00 per hour to screw a bolt into a door?

Prissy, I am 100% with you.

We desperately need a union. Why are we second class workers? We produce a marketable service the same as nurses, teachers, truck drivers, sewing machine operators, bricklayers, plumbers, city workers, bakers, electricians, etc.

We are constantly threatened if we do not make daily line counts, QA requirements, not having enough jobs, losing befits, etc.

The management of large MTSOs are laughing not only all the way to the bank but also at us.

There are MTs on this forum who have a real - grasp on the SM

issues we face and have the ability explain our plight in a very concise way. These are the MTs who need to reach out to the already formed union for healthcare workers, SEIU 1199. Some of us just don't have that ability. We don't need to FORM a union, we need to hook up with it.

how would they not be aware of our plight? If it would be beneficial to both us and the union for us to be a part of it, wouldn't they have done it already? Wouldn't more members make the union stronger? Why would they not want us or why would we have to convince them to help us? I don't know a lot about unions, so maybe somebody can fill me in here as to why this hasn't happened already? Pressure from MTSOs like what Walmart is doing or it is just too hard to convince remote MTs to join?

Actually, telephone operators, cab and bus drivers (equivalent of stage coach drivers today) did and have unions. The few remaining huge MTSOs will continue to increase our requirements, lower our pay and benefits and reap huge benefits from our hard and underpaid efforts. Possibly a union of some sort would give us a voice, input or legal advice, some equalization against management. I may be wrong in interpreting the point the poster was making regarding telephone operators and stagecoach drivers, but I think the point was when your jobs gone, a union cannot help. Fortunately for us, we have skills that are hard to come by, and presently there is a need for our skills, although we could very likely end up as "telephone operators and stage-coach drivers" because of technology and/or outsourcing, and I for one would rather face that with a union than alone.

If you do, what are your thoughts on CMT? In reading the thread going on right now, I see MTs saying it's worthless, it's a rip-off, etc.  But what do you think a union would really do? Any PROFESSIONAL organization SHOULD have standards and should have a MINIMUM certification.  Like it or not, AHDI is OUR organization and the CMT is what is being pushed as the MINIMUM standard.  Credentials do NOT guarantee higher pay.  They say you have met the minimum standards ...

What about India?  I have always been under the impression that we are a minority in this company, we being US MTs.  Won't Nuance just send all the work to India and be done with us?  I wonder if joining/forming a union would protect us from that... I worked as an IC transcriptionist in 2013 for approximately 4 months.   The company sent a W-9 form and is requesting it be signed and sent back.  I did not make a total of $600.00 when I was working for them, which I've understood from others that if you make less than $600.00 you don't need to send in a W-9 form.  Can someone clarify on this?
