Is anyone really making a decent living doing speech at 4 cpl? - Serious Question

Posted: Jun 09, 2011

I am looking into to taking a second job to make extra money.  My main job pays by the hour as I work directly for a hospital and it is a combination of speech and straight transcription work.  Consequently, I'm thinking maybe taking a strictly speech job would be easier on my neck, shoulders, arms, and hands, but I don't want to be wasting my time.  If I'm not going to make any money doing it, why bother?

So I would like to know if there are any MTs out there who do strictly speech at the "going rate" of 4 cpl and are making decent money.  How many lines per day are you pulling in order to make decent money?

With my main job, I find that the speech jobs are not that much faster for me.  We use Dictaphone and it just sucks.  I'd much rather type the reports.  But if there is a speech platform that is actually productive, I'd like to know about it and apply for those companies that use that platform.

Thanks!

I make 0.45 per line and my biweekly paycheck is - sm

500 to 600 bucks. Yes, I am taking home an average of $1100 a month. This is supposed to support myself and my child?! Ha! My paycheck is small because of VR, running out of work and the overhiring of my company.

I'm with you! - sm

I'm making about the same as you. This is a drop in my pay by about 25%. I can't support myself and my kids on this kind of single-mom income. I'm off to DSS today to apply for food benefits. Looking for other companies that may still have straight typing, but that's going to be hard to find. Not sure, perhaps bartending is the way to go! ;)

Im at 600 biweekly for 4 cpl - sad, sad, sad, sad

When I was typing, 1400 biweekly!

Ok, I'm crying again.

I've been doing speech on Dictaphone for over 7 years. Love, love, love it. I get paid hourly. At leas 80% of my work is speech. Almost feel put upon if I have to actually type a report. I think we all have to get used to it, I don't think speech is going anywhere soon.

decent money with voice recognition - nina

My pay is $600 every 2 weeks with voice recognition, and this is part-time - 25 hours a week. I work on the eScription platform.

Unfortunately, speech is here to stay - MR

I agree with others that speech is here to stay but 4 cents is so low. I recently took another job as my old company, where I had been a long time, recently closed when their biggest account went to EHR. They were paying 6 cents and 7 cents on weekends for VR. When I was offered jobs afterward, even if the straight typing rate was okay (8.5+), if the VR was 4 cents or less, I couldn't take it. It's just not enough, and I know all the straight typing will eventually go to VR. Still not great, but I ended up taking a job with VR for 5 cents + incentives, even though for now I'm doing straight at 7.5 + incentives.

BTW, on the Dictaphone/ExText platform with VR at my last job, I was averaging 3000 lines in 8 hours.

Escription... - hmmmmm

[ In Reply To ..]
I've worked on both Escription and ExTEXT, and it seems like the Escription winds up with better drafts of the documents - very little to edit. Of course maybe the account I'm on has been in VR longer so the computer has had more time to "learn."

But...at 3 cpl, it's not really cutting it, either.

I totally agree, too much work to be done for such little pay - nm

Is it possible to make a living on VR? - Donna

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been working on VR accounts for nearly 4 years, for a national transcription company. And they don't pay for the space bar, either. If I work a 14-hour day, I MIGHT make $70. I've been an MT for 15 years and this feels like punishment. I've worked 2 jobs since typing VR accounts because there'e simply no way to make a decent living on VR. I've seen MTs with far less experience get straight typing only accounts, despite a "no nepotism" rule. My pay comes out to less than mimimum wage. Is that even legal? I've applied for work at other large companies and they don't seem to offer anything better. So I'd REALLY like to know if anyone is making a DECENT living on VR only at 4 CPL and NOT working more than 40 hours per week?

I'd like to know also... - jj

I worked straight typing the last 12 years. This VR stuff is new to me. I was offered a job with 25% ESL, 80% VR at 4 cpl, 20% typing at 8 cpl. Not that I expect PT to be clearing $800 every 2 weeks, but is there any way to get close? Also, when a company tells you 80% VR is there really ANY straight typing or does it usually go elsewhere?

I'm doing okay - Snow Bunny

I receive 5 cpl for speech and average 400 to 500 lph on the Extext system. And I'm not speeding up the dictation, either. Things are just well "transcribed" by the system. It's the key reason we have to transcribe verbatim. The documents the MTs proof were processed against the original voice file, which ultimately improves the quality of the dictation. It's the same as with Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Is Anyone Able To Make A Decent Living As A MT Anymore?
Nov 14, 2012

I quit my in-house MT job, a job that I had held for almost 20 years, a little over a year ago because of a new boss who drove me and about 10 other people to quit because she was so hard to work for.  I thought long and hard about it before I quit, but could not see myself putting up with her for the next 10-15 years until I could retire.  She was making some of us physically ill because of stress.  I believe we may have been "creatively downsized".  Since I q ...

Is Anyone Able To Make A Decent Living At Landmark Doing VR?
May 21, 2014

Over the past few months, the account that I am on has gone from being at least half straight typing to almost all VR, with only a very small handful of dictators that are still on straight transcription.  I am having a really hard time making a living since this has happened and my paychecks keep getting smaller and smaller.  I am wondering if anyone else is in the same situation, or if it's just me.  My account is a pretty busy one, but most of these VR reports are a comple ...

How Are People Not Making A Living?
Jul 06, 2012

THIS IS NOT A MEAN OR DEGRADING MESSAGE.  I am genuinely curious as I have been with them for almost 9 years and have never had a problem netting (after taxes) anywhere from 13-17$/hour.  I only work 50-60 hours every 2 weeks and I am bringing home 550--800$. I don't see how some people are working 80 hours every 2 weeks and aren't bringing home at least 1000$.  ...

Speech "wreck" Is Making Me Crazy!
Apr 12, 2013

Anyone else notice more reports showing up with SR instead of TR lately? I have several on my accounts that seem to have been added lately that should not ever be on SR.  These are not situations that the speech engine is ever going to "learn." It takes human ears to deciper their "words." These dictators are just awful.  You know the ones...they talk so fast they don't finish the sentence and let you guess what it's supposed to be, chop off words mid thought, etc. Well, of c ...

Cant Seem To Make A Living
Feb 22, 2010

I have worked as a radiology transcriptionist for over ten years .  My pay has been cut in half and jobs are hard to find. I take tests and no one calls back.  I usually only have their email anyway.    I am now learning acute care because it seems for last few years it has been the only game in town.  However, I cannot believe how hard it is and I am getting paid the same as radiology.  It's becoming impossible to afford to live on this income, but I ...

Can You Make A Living As An MT?
Oct 16, 2011

I am thinking about going to The Andrews School to become an MT. I have taken the pre enrollment exam and they said i passed with a score of 84%, which i think is pretty good for not knowing what im doing. But,  today i was surfing the web and seen a post from someone that was ranting about how the school is a scam and after they completed the course they got a job where they had to work 60-70 hours per week and only get paid 3 cents per line. So, i was wanting to know if there is any Andre ...

Living Well Off Of Our Backs
Mar 13, 2014

How does it happen that office personnel get in-house raises and are making far more than any of us when it is the transcriptionists who bring in the actual money?  We are solely responsible for the lavish lifestyles of CEOs and the salaries of management while we ourselves make next to nothing.  I remember years ago the office personnel making little wisecracks at how much we made while some of them with "degrees" did not make nearly as much.  Well, I guess that has been fixed no ...

I Am So Tired Of Living Under The Threat Of This 99%

Either I am being targeted or I will agree I am on an account that perhaps requires regular audits, but I just cannot take it anymore.  The last two audits I barely failed and I now I am assuming I will be terminated.  We are encouraged to speed up editing and in the process we are most assuredly missing incorrect ASR dictation, etc.  I mean no offense to any MTs who work for this company, but I daresay across the board this company does not produce MTs who continuously maintain ...

Cannot Make A Living As MT Anymore
Mar 09, 2015

So sad what this profession has come to. I am 57 years old, have been MT for 25+ years, always been a high producer with good QA scores. I made a really good living until January 2013 when Nuance acquired company, I chose not to accept their terms of employment. Went to another US based company (?) part time. Just did income tax and was shocked. Needless to say, I will not renew my contract again. It's just not worth the aggravation anymore. The incentive and production bonuses ...

Living In Fear Of Critical Error.

Interview At Assisted Living Facility For MT

Was Looking For A Decent MT Job ANYWHERE

Notice I said decent..not fantastic, dream, etc.  I planned on working for any money I got.  I've been an MT for a while, we DO work for our money.  I don't know who started the rumor we don't and need to get less because the consensus is now an idiot can do the job.  Maybe that's how you get the medical records that the doctors, themselves, cannot decipher or make sense of without (wait for it) guessing.  (I think we've all sailed in that boat t ...
