Can you really make a living? - dumbfounded

I just accepted a job at AllType and the majority of my account is VC. I have not dropped my other position I had as IC and no VC. I am wondering, as this is my first time ever doing VC, can you really make a living at this? I know I will NEVER make a fortune at this job but an 800+ paycheck every 2 weeks would sure be desirable. Thanks.

Yes you can but a lot depends on pay, dictators, available work. I do.

If you have good, clear dictators, you can fly through them pretty quick. However, anyone mush-mouthed or thick accented ESL will slow you down considerably. Helps a ton to speed up performance if you know keyboard shortcuts.

An $800 paycheck every 2 weeks is poverty wages. If that's your - goal, you will NOT be making a living. And yes

I make a "living" but I don't like it. Line rates have dropped TOO LOW. If they don't pick up I will take my skills and talents to another line of work.

So imagine what $500 every 2 weeks is like! - (Thats what I make - it sucks!) nm

I feel for you, started a VR job but did not quit my other job straight typing - and before the month was over

was giving a 2 week notice as I could see that is what my paychecks were going to be like every 2 weeks and my mortage payment is close to that a month. Just glad I didn't quit my job. I took the other job because looking for benefits, but not worth it if I cannot play the bills. There was just too much editing going on in those jobs for me to ever be able to produce any lines and the ESLs they has on the VR was just a big joke.

If you have crisp, clear dictators - perhaps; but in my experience with two different companies, I have had nothing but unintelligible ESLs and unintelligible mush mouths. Now if I stayed glued to my computer for 20 hours a day without sleeping, eating, bathing, or even going to the bathroom, I might make $800 every two weeks. It's just a travesty! If you don't have a second income to supplement that pittance you get from the voice wreck, you'll be homeless and living in the street. I still have my other company I have been with for four years doing straight typing, and even with the pay rate, I'm still better off than with the speech wreck.

I've done it for about 4 months...it's a joke. Sometimes I'm only making $200 in 2 weeks if docs are on vacation, etc. My DH is the breadwinner, but this is almost killing me. I know, it's money, but really?

What I make is supposed to fill the gap between the bills and what the DH's salary doesn't cover. The stress was bad enough before SR; now it's just too much. I've gotten so burned out on this career after 20 years, it's too much of a struggle to come anywhere close to the needed $120-$150 for a day's work. And we are far, far, FAR away from having an extravagant lifestyle that could be trimmed down.

So sad what this profession has come to. I am 57 years old, have been MT for 25+ years, always been a high producer with good QA scores. Either I am being targeted or I will agree I am on an account that perhaps requires regular audits, but I just cannot take it anymore. I seem to be spending an awful lot of time in VR documents, so I am confused as to why I am getting paid less for them.
