When a company treats its employees like disposable parts, such behavior can often be partially tolerated if the pay is good. That is not the case with M Modal, which has consistently lowered the pay rate of its employees to the point where many of them don't make minimum wage.

The information comes from a current employ in the company who works as a medical transcriptionist and has something like 40 years experience and has never seen anything like M Modal.

going to work for some of these other companies out there. Tell her to take a minute and read the company board or try working for Nuance, TTS, Keystrokes and some of the others out there who only pay 3 cpl and some who don't pay at all. Tell her to give that a try and then come back and up-date us in about 6 months to a year.
Companies followed MM who used to be Medquist - MRC Group, Secrephone, Medifax.

Social media is the only way the public sees the face of the company. Nothing will ever change if we stay behind the scenes and complain like we do. We must take to the internet and show the world how they treat their employees.

Full timers get 18 days of vacation - not including ability to swap shifts

A lot depends on who your TSM is. I have had some rotten ones and some of the best. The rotten ones will never approve your PTO and not even try to find you work. The good ones will approve your PTO quickly or work with you so you can make up hours not to mention find you backup accounts. While I agree with the rest of the article the paid time off thing is inaccurate.

Three days of PTO a year? Do part-timers deserve to have a vacation? If a part-timer wants a day off, she is required to use her PTO. What does that leave her? If she never uses a day, she still has to wait 5 years to take a 2-week vacation.

The official policy is 3 days of PTO for part-time MTs and they have to use their PTO if they want to take a day off. If you get more, good for you but that is not what others are getting.

I have been here for 12 years, was statutory until they did away with that, became employee and with that receive so many hours of PTO for each production hour worked. I have also noticed that not everyone is receiving the same PTO benefits.

Part time only gets 3 days a year, even if you have been with the company for 16 years. I keep running out of work and if I work under 24 hours, like 23 hours each week for 2 weeks, I get docked from getting any time toward PTO. So basically this year, I received a whopping 8 hours worth of PTO for the year. That is why my pay sometimes has been around $100 every 2 weeks.

I was smart 5 years ago and learned a new trade and work 32 hours at a second job making more than double being an MT. This MT job is just to pay the electric bill or cable so I can work for MM. What a joke if you think about it.

Only make $100 every 2 weeks and not be let go by now? I thought it was mandatory to work at least 24 hours a wk part-time? If your check was only $100 every 2 weeks that would mean for 48 hours a pay-period you were only averaging a whopping $2 an hour. That is way below minimum wage and MM will let people go if they cant at least produce minimum wage and not only that, but that would be like saying they are not even giving you make-up pay, which they are required to do by law and with make up pay you should be bringing home more than $100 every 2 weeks.
It happens about every other month. Geesh. - Work under 24 hours EACH WEEK.

There are times I get 21-23 hours (in the week), but no work to be found, even at 3AM including weekends. Still here working. I make just above minimum wage, Georgia's minimum wage.

So it reflects your "scheduled" hours but you don't actually get to work that many. Thus affecting your earned PTO and them not having to pay you any makeup pay.

It seems obvious they are in the middle of some big change regarding hours and scheduling though.

I have gotten a couple of e-mails in the last couple of days regarding documenting every last second of what you are scheduled for.

Between that and the freeze on tier testing, I am guessing big changes are in store come October.
They probably "suggest" she alter her time card - so it comes out to "min.wage" amount.

They do have to pay "make up" pay to bring your pay up to minimum wage. I've had plenty of that in the past. MM must be making plenty of money to be able to pay above production pay.
Of course MM is making money. Higher ups - get over a million a year.

Hmmm.... I wonder why my pay went down 60% in the last 5 years. The pay for CEOs 6 years ago was around $250,000.

I loved the article on MModal! It was perfect! I got rode because I was making too many errors trying too hard to produce lines and when my line count dropped, I also got rode, even though I was still above the minimum. Every time I turned around I was getting written up for some infraction. I have over 24 years as a transcriptionist and have always had excellent employer reviews. This company is nothing but slave drivers and I hope they go down in flames! My advice to everyone is the same that was given to me, GET OUT! My arm would go numb when I knew I had to look at their emails and see what their latest complaint was. I cried morning after morning, hating them so much. I don't hate transcription at all, it was MModal!

As a flexible part-timer even with many years under your belt, the company still offers 5 yes 5 UNPAID days off a year. In what other industry would this be acceptable?

a horror story. I an think of a number of other companies whose names you can insert in place of M-Modal and they will fit the description just as well. Trust me, it is not just M-Modal by a long shot, its the industry in general.

MM (Medquist)was the LARGEST transcription company in the United States with over 12,000 MTs. Then the nightmare began when 2 companies wanted to buy Medquist. The one who should have bought MM was out of the picture(Medquist did not want it) and did not win the buy of MM, but CBay won. That is when it all went downhill because whatever MM could get away with, other companies followed MM including benefits, pay, and how companies treat MTs.

come out with speech recognition and following SR, line rates plummeted. When I worked for M-Modal I made 6 cpl for editing a tier 3 and 9 for straight typing, while it was a dramatic decrease from what I previously made other companies were only offering me 4 and 8 cpl. The one thing I gave M-Modal credit for is that they paid me based on my experience while some only paid ALL THEIR EMPLOYEES THE SAME, across the board. I am no longer in MT any more, but I will be the first to say that I have worked for worse places than M-Modal.

Then there was the merger with MRC Group/Transcription Ltd/Lanier Transcription Service and became the leading transcription company in the United States. This company had endless lawsuits and one was taking away pay from the MTs by not paying us correctly and then over billing their customers. Medquist then was bought out by CBay which turned to MModal. Every other company followed this company when it came to treating their employees.

Lately I have not bee doing well, short on line count, a few bad audits, I am in the dog house. I now have a fear that a I too will be let go. It is hard to work like this, wish I could just quit, but cannot right now, maybe in a few months, unless they terminate me. I understand the policy, 150 LPH, but sometimes I just cannot make it, dictators are bad, unfamiliar accounts. When it is good, it is good, but when it is bad, it is bad! What if the extremely lower than ever volumes (OOW on 3 accounts at a time) is because some of the acute worktypes are being converted to ambulatory care WT since more and more patients are kept in observation status or "extended recovery" instead of being admitted. W(c)ould not some of those same-day surgery types perhaps be called ambulatory? We would likely be kept in the dark about that just like everything else, don't you reckon? I have worked for Nuance a long time ago.  They had e-scription and it was the worst program i have ever been in.  I had to check, check, and double check the demographics and God forbid if there was something i had to correct!  By the time i got to transcribing, i had already wasted a half-hour.  Anyone else with this experience?  And do they still have it? ...
