I visited One-Stop and asked about Trade Act - Scooby-Doo

I decided to look into the benefits of the Trade Act which apparently includes only some states but which MQ has been qualified for. I'm not yet unemployed but need to at least feel prepared. I live in California so was given the name and number of the person in charge in my part of the state. I also picked the brains of the One-Stop personnel about career changes. They are a WEALTH of information, including 2 excellent websites:

You can find a compendium of resources about related careers so there is life after MQ.

I also related my experience with MQ as objectively as I could, the multiple lawsuits, our dropping salaries, outsourcing American jobs, etc. At first I could see the looks of disbelief, but then they told me a lot of that sounded downright illegal to them. I have yet to make an appointment with the Trade Act representative, but will certainly relate my experience to him as well.

Thanks for the info, but I really wonder what good this could possibly be for anyone near 60. I guess I could retrain for something and then retire. I think it would be easier go get on disability than to make a career change at this point.

I sincerely hope you do retrain for something because there is just no future for MTs anymore.

there are special programs to find jobs for "older" workers. I'm 49 and was hoping transcription would hold out until I retire. It's no picnic for me to retrain for another career right now, but you'd be surprised what skills you now have just by transcribing that could morph into a new field.

I have a job. I do not want it. I am sick of being an MT. There are newbies who want to be an MT. I want to help a newbie. I got offered 3 jobs and took this one, and I still don't want it. Been working with VR since last October. I spoke to a representative of the Trade Act in person today to ask some questions. I learned this and want to share it to help empower those who feel hopeless this season: -All states are participating in the Trade Act. -There was an old version of the Trade Act which necessitated that you be laid off by your company to benefit with the Trade Act. Medquist has been certified under the TAA, or Trade Act, Program. This means that former Medquist employees who lost their jobs can get funds to go to school as well as help paying for their COBRA premiums. They need to go to their local Workforce center to apply. I just found out about this government program. From what I understand, it helps those who have lost all or part of their hours/income due to outsourcing of their profession, especially us older workers who need to retrain in order to reenter the workforce in another field. MQ has made big changes to my primary account. Now things are all messed up and because of it, we have to re-enter redundant information in the ADT screen. For example, it says ADT Attending and ADT Admitting with the doc's names. No one is going to do it for us. There is wage theft, minimum wage, changing of timecards, disrespect for our knowledge, ridiculous working conditions, bad management, and no communication. I am transcribing this dictator tonight who has had one patient with "infantigo" and on her "review of symptoms" she dictates "Eyes" as a subheading by itself then does HEENT later on in the review.
