Online schools for transcription - Anita

Posted: Aug 04, 2012

I have been an MT for 4 years now and actually completed all my training at a local technical college.  Now, I find myself in a position to mentor some young Military Spouses regarding medical transcription and what online schools would be the better choice for completing a MT certification.

I am not that familiar with the online options, so I was hoping to hear the good, the bad, and yes even the ugly about what is out there.  Our spouses have funding of around $4000 and that is it.  This price includes all material they would need for the course; to include books and fees.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Anita

I graduated from Andrews about a year ago. If you check the archives on here, you will find tons of info about Andrews. It is one of, if not the best, for medical transcription. When I started in early 2011, the price including all materials and books was $3800. They also have a payment plan.

MTEC is an on-line medical transcription program. - see message

I cant give you much info about it other than I think its affiliated with Nuance. I have just read about it here on the boards and it sounds like some of the MTs that completed their program went on to work for Nuance.

I have read a lot on here about Andrews as well so I think those two are pretty ligit and recognized by the MT companies.

Webmedx owned MTEC. sm - XWMX

When we were bought out by Nuance, MTEC was part of the package. So, yes, Nuance owns MTEC, unless they have since sold it off.

My 2 cents - transitioning MT

I am a military spouse, career transcriptionist and I used part of my MYCAA benefits before my husband's rank was excluded (to get a 3M certificate through MTEC and part of the requirements for my AS degree).

My advice to any military spouse wanting to get the most of the 4K is to put it towards anything BUT medical transcription. Use it toward something with a future, like HIM or coding. I don't remember if you can pursue an associates degree with MYCAA but if you can, I would recommend it.

Andrews school is your best bet. - see msg

Your best bet would be to talk to Linda Andrews at Andrews School. Her graduates are considere to be the cream of the crop by national employers. They have no difficulty passing employment tests and at graduation will even appear to have several years of work experience. Employers often do not believe they are recent graduates.

Your concern needs to be employment prospects in a "portable" job AND the student's ability to SUSTAIN employment after that, not just cost. Several schools cost less, but have hidden expenses and a very poor showing in terms of program completion, instructor support (onehas none), student satisfaction, maintaing employment and earning enough quickly. The ridiculously short time to completionis unreasonable and must be supplemented with extensions, and students are left to figure things out on their own using error-filled, homemade materials, so many never finish. Even more fail the final exam, which in some cases is the only test in the program. Another formerly good school has been under new ownership and is no longer what it used to be.

Andrews is $3800, includes everything (NO extra expenses), provides superb instructor support, and uses top-rated textbooks, references, and SUM program materials, including ESL dictation and some other sets. Their graduates are well-prepared to work even in jobs that would otherwise require years of experience. Even the typical requirement of experience in hospital "big 4" is waived for them. Andrews will work with your students as long as necessary without extra payments.

Are you also allow to mentor them about coding programs? - My Recommendation

If you are also able to mentor your Military Spouses about coding programs, Andrews teaches both courses.

How can someone with no coding experience mentor someone about a coding education?

Can you suggest a different course? - me

If you've been an MT for 4 years you know what it is like now and that there are dozens of MTs competing for every position. There are new MTs fresh out of school who can't get a job.

I think it is great that funding is available and you'd like to mentor them, but you don't want the money to be wasted or want them to have unreasonable expectations, or that they've been misled.

Having said that I've heard Andrews is the best.

There are a few good online courses - mimtt

There are a few good online schools out there, but the one I keep hearing about is Andrews. Personally, I went through MTEC and I thought they had a very good program at the time, but I finished 7 years ago and when I recommended it to a friend recently (within the last 2 years), I regretted it after seeing how much it had changed. I have some friends who recently went through Andrews and had nothing but good things to say about it, plus I think it's about 2K less than MTEC.

I second that - Leaving MT

I also went to MTEC about 4 years ago and felt like it was a good program then. I have never had a problem getting a job and felt well prepared to hit the ground running working from home, but MTEC has changed quite a bit and is now presumably owned by Nuance. I have heard nothing but good things about Andrews. As a matter of fact, at a local chapter AHDI fall symposium I went to a few years ago, an Andrews instructor who was at the symposium (not as a participant, just in the audience) got a standing ovation by the audience when she introduced herself. It was impressive. There were some MTEC instructors there as well, but it was the Andrews instructor who got the cheers.

If you are doing it, do it the right way: Go to Andrews.

I need some expert opinions please on online schools for both coding and billing courses for my daughter. She is looking into Andrews, Keiser, Rasmussen and Ashworth.
