best schools/expected pay - bev

Posted: Aug 26, 2010

so now what schools are the best (in Ohio)?  are the on-line schools comparable?  and what can i expect, as a "newbie" to be making once i land a job?  is it better to work for a MT company or be "in" the actual work environment.  hospitals vs doctors offfices, etc.  need all the info i can get.  thanks to everyone again.

newbie - check

Did you check the rest of the posts on this forum? If you can get a job as a newbie, it will take a couple years before you actually have enough experience to really make any kind of salary at all. You should work somewhere inhouse so you have someone near to help with questions you may have.

Check which schools are recommended on this forum also, or check with ADHI to see what they recommend.

Just remember that a lot of jobs are going overseas to be done, a lot of the hospitals and clinics are going to electronic medical records, so not needing many MTs anymore, and there are many, many seasoned MTs that are looking for jobs that will be hired ahead of newbies.

So check the pros and cons on this forum before you decide you really want to do this.

How Are We Expected To Get Anything Right
Oct 09, 2013

I go to the "examples" in repository and every one is formatted differently for the same work type by the same dictator. Not to mention what is probably "standard text" are all different as well. Then you have QA who mark you wrong for things one way, then you change it (against your better judgement) and do it their way, only to be marked wrong again. So you ask your QA lead who tells you the way it is supposed to be, only to go into the transcrption guide and find out YOU were doing it the ...

Editors Expected To ..... ?
Apr 13, 2013

I started a new client for an MTSO recently. One ESL dictator's H&Ps are so out of order they require a ton of reformatting. This is the order he dictated: History of Present Illness, Past Medical History, Chief Complaint, Plan, PE, Review of Systems, Assessment/Plan. The template has to have formatting changed (bold headings and point size), the guy is very difficult to understand, does not use proper grammar and needs most sentences restructured. He slurs through the Review of Systems ...

What Should Be Expected As A Fair Rate Now
Sep 15, 2011

I have never seen pay so low for MTs....I am really pretty shocked to see some of the rates.  I do realize that good ol' 11-12 cpl is never going to be coming back, I know the economy is not good for anyone, businesses included, but I really am wondering how low can I go and still make a decent living?  Now I am talking about somebody with a lot of years of experience in all fields.  I am thinking no lower than 8 for me, and even that makes me cringe, and I am trying to psych ...

I Am Growing So Weary Of Being Expected To Know As Much As A Doctor...
Jun 04, 2011

for my measly little wage.  what is up with that?  I am talking mostly about comments I get back from quality people who act like they are doctors - what?  but you would rather work for peanuts?  I have never ever eluded to the fact I would ever know as much as a doctor.  I am a good researcher and a bit OCD about my job (a job I used to absolutely LOVE), but do I know as much as a doctor?  not.  if I did, I would certainly have gone to medical school.  ma ...

I want out of this madness and will prepare myself in the meantime. I am sure some others could benefit from anyone's input. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and adv ...

Coding Schools - Where Did YOU Go?
Jun 01, 2010

Okay, here we go again.....if anyone has attended a coding school in the last year, is attending a coding school, could you please post your thoughts (was it worth the money, quality, etc)?  I know several people are still on the fence as to whether to pay the large sum to go to a private school (Andrews, DeVry) or attend community colleges in preparation to take their credentials in coding.  I've been reading posts saying the education from all is basically the same, of course it ...

Do These Schools Use The SUM Program?
Jan 11, 2012

I'm researching MT schools and weighing the various pros and cons. On my shortlist are two schools that use the SUM program--Andrews & MTEC--and two "schools" that I can't get confirmation on--CareerStep and Ed2Go. Any insights on the latter? Thanks! ...

Licensed Schools
Aug 10, 2012

I learned from someone who found out the hard way that it's important to make sure whatever school you go to is licensed by their state. The information is supposed to be displayed on their website and any other catalogs or ads. If not, there may be a problem. The school in question would tell everyone their state didn't require a license. It turned out that the school kept moving not only from state to state, but from country to country and the state they had been living in did requir ...

Penn Foster Schools
Jan 04, 2010

I am currently finishing my schooling from Penn Foster and I guess I didn't do enough research before I signed up for Penn Foster and now I'm regretting it. Ever since I've been hearing all the negative comments about Penn Foster I don't even want to finish the course even though I am on the last lesson. Just getting discouraged and want to know if anyone took Penn Foster courses and found a job. Totally new on this whole MT thing and if you have any information about getting ...

Connection Between Companies/MT Schools?
Feb 07, 2010

Have to admit I'm pretty shocked by several of the posts on this forum, especially concerning how the companies are operating.  New to the MT world here, and guess I'm green.  Hadn't heard much at the school I attended except this forum was "too negative."  I now see there's a legit reason for negative posts about companies if these posters are being honest, and I have no reason to believe they're not. Just wondering how tight a connection the MT schools ...

Before You Commit To Coding Schools
May 16, 2011

Hi all, I just wanted to say, before you commit to a coding course, make sure you have enough time to study! I started Andrews School last year, and right after I started I found out I was pregnant.  I work a full time job and now have a new baby.  After I completed the first module and started the second module, I was so stressed out I needed a break, now I am having trouble getting back into the swing of things and finding the time to study.  My entire tuition is paid for and I ...

Coding Schools - Andrews
Jul 14, 2011

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search. Based on my training at Andrews, I have not had a problem with employment tests, passing the RMT and CMT, etc., and with the coding program, as long as I study hard  and do the assignments, I believe that I will have the same experience. Based on the excellent training I received at Andrews, I am beginning to go through the coding course. The ...

Choices Of Schools For Coding
Jan 10, 2012

I am trying to sort through the different options out there for education in coding - is there an online school that most of you would recommend?  I am officially out of  MT'ing after 20 years, threw up my hands, literally, gave up trying to make a living at it.  I would probably use up half of my savings for schooling, but after many months of trying on different "hats", so to speak, in the work force, my heart is pulling me back to the medical field.  Opinions??? ...

MT Schools Promising Big Bucks
Feb 25, 2012

First, don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to be negative about this in any way and wish any new MT success. However, with this profession dying like it is and even very experienced MTs just trying to eke out even $10 an hour . . . It really aggravates me all of these MT schools and courses trying to suck innocent people in with their high tuition costs, etc. The fact is that nowadays it is akin to going and paying x amount of money to go work for $10 or less an hour. These schools/c ...

Are There Any Schools Or Training Centers That Will
Mar 17, 2012

I've been an MT for 35 years.  I'm in my 60s.  Every non-MT job ad I read has "mandatory" skills I don't have.  I don't want a job where I'm on my feet 8 hours a day.  I have no money for school.  I could only manage a few hours per week in class.  Any ideas, anyone? ...
