Odd employment question - MT

Posted: Feb 18, 2012

Let's say you apply for a transcription job and they intend to do a credit check which you know will show you late on payments (because you are unemployed).  Does that automatically disqualify a person?  I feel like I have no business applying knowing my credit is less than stelllar at this moment in time and it is depressing.  What to do.

I am no longer a MTSO, but I can tell you that it would not disqualify a good MT if I were still hiring. In fact, while I was still an MTSO, I met a woman who was going through a take-no-prisoners divorce, who was losing her house to foreclosure, and who, on financial paper, looked terrible. However, she was a delightful person, was ambitious, was willing to work. She had run into some bad circumstances through no fault of her own. The real estate market in California was just starting to bottom out at that time and she got caught in the middle of it. Long story short, I was instrumental in her getting hired and she did a great job. So no, I would not disqualify anyone based on financial problems, especially in this economy. Good luck to you.

Thanks, so I should - MT

apply anyway and cross my fingers? With any luck my many years of experience and test results will be enough.

Credit check for MT? - Curious

I am out there applying as well, not just MT positions but others as well.

Which company does a credit check on MT applicants?

I know that financial companies -- even insurance companies -- do credit checks because they want to weed out prospective embezzlers. But MT?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I think you should apply. Most MTSOs (contrary to some of the propaganda on this board) have hearts and think for themselves (MQ excepted, of course). I think you should apply. If you test well, the MTSO is not likely to care about your personal circumstances. I know I wouldn't except to give you a job and wish you well. Good luck!
So if a credit check doesn't matter (supposedly), why do it then? - Hayseed

Something just doesn't jive with that is all I'm saying.

I think it is mostly the bigger MTSOs that do the credit checks. Maybe I am wrong; if so, others can correct me. I agree with you, it does not JIBE that they do that. I would never do a credit check on a prospective employee--quite honestly, I do not feel that others' financial affairs are any of my business.

That is all such B.S.!!!! A credit check should be - none of their business!!!! (sm)

I just SO do not get it at all why companies feel they should discriminate against someone who is either currently unemployed (which is why they applied for the job!!!), or is behind on their bills (because they're unemployed!!!).

That latest development in job application is so beyond ridiculous, I don't even have appropriate words to describe it.

However, that fact alone (not to mention the potential for ID theft) is why no company gets my SS# until a job offer is on the table, and they need my SS# for tax purposes.

I am an old woman and will never apply for another MT job, but when I was still doing it, I would NEVER give my SS number until I had a signed contract.

They don't want you filing bankruptcy and having your wages garnished; that is why they do credit checks.

That makes no sense. - Huh?

[ In Reply To ..]
Your employer cannot control who garnishes your wages. The IRS, state, etc. can garnish your wages at any time for unpaid taxes, child support, etc.

Likewise, your employer doesn't care if your wages are garnished or not. All they do is obey the order.

Try again. There is some other reason for these credit checks besides potential future wage garnishments.

At-will Employment
Aug 16, 2011

If your employment with an MTSO is "at will," doesn't that apply to BOTH you and them? The legal meaning of "at-will employment" is as follows: "A common-law rule that an employment contract of indefinite duration can be terminated by either the employer or the employee at any time for any reason; also known as terminable at will." So, given this legal rule, why are we deemed ineligible for rehire when we leave an MTSO without what they perceive as fair notice? ...

Has anyone else answered ads for them.  You do a really EASY test. They offer to train you for free..  then send you emails... basically to schedule a job interview.  You text them.  They send you this agreement, which says that in order to work for them you need to plunk out $450 to buy their software.. This does not quite seem on the level to me.. I have been working in this industry going on 20 years.  I work in house right now..  but job situation is precariou ...

In a nutshell, I graduated from Career Step in 2007 with High Honors and worked for TRS for a year.  I was happy at TRS and produced quality work (98.5% accuracy).  Then life intervened and the past few years have been rough. Employment Terminated

I got canned yesterday for not making over minimum wage. I meet over the minimum lines requirement, but still not enough for minimum wage for my state. Pre-employment Testing Sm
Dec 23, 2013

Do all the major companies require actual transcription of voice dictation, or do some of them only require on-line skills assessment, i.e., Q&A, multiple choice, etc. I have found that some of these voice files are actually very hard to understand, deliberately done or not, placing the applicant in a disadvantaged position to start. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thx. ...

Employment Question
Nov 21, 2014

Fifteen years ago, I worked for a certain employer and was terminated after 4 months in a particular position. I recently applied to that same employer for the same job. While completing the application, one of the questions was if I had ever been an employee of theirs, and I chose no because it had been so long. Is this going to be a problem (application didn't ask for SSN)? If so, should I try to contact the HR department and explain that I need to reapply and change my answer? Or if it g ...
