Nearly every MTSO engages in this fraudulent practice, - and the revenue is staggering.

Posted: Oct 26, 2012

Most of us are not even aware of this, but the MTSOs have been doing it to all of us for years, and what they are stealing from us is huge.  Check this out.

I will use just one report I did today to illustrate.  Template loaded for DS.  Report was half a minute long.  I am required to delete any unused headings.  All of the preloaded headings came to 200 characters.  Based on a 65-character line, that's 3.07 lines.  I had to delete all of those characters with the exception of the "hospital course" heading.  The report was 4 lines long.  Line counter gave me credit for just over 1 line because I deleted nearly 3 lines to start with, which put the line count at a -3 lines starting point.  Therefore, the first 3 lines I typed were free.  4 lines typed minus 3 lines deleted in template headings, and I get paid for 1 line.  So, the company on this one report just stole 3 lines from me.  They will bill the client for the 4 lines I typed, but they will only pay me for 1 of them, and that doesn't count the time and effort they stole from me that it took to delete the unnecessary headings.

Now, lets do the math.  Let's say each transcriptionist loses an average of 10 lines a day this way.  Insignificant to their paycheck, but what does it mean to the company?  Well, if a company has say 500 transcriptionists, and the company steals 10 lines from each of them a day, that comes to 5000 lines a day they are billing for but not paying the transcriptionists for.  5000 lines a day, even at just 10 cents a line, comes to $500 a day times 30 days equals $15,000 a month.

For all you who are prone to defend this practice as miniscule to each MT, would you also agree that if I could find a way to steal 25 cents a day from every bank it would be okay?  Of course not!  This is a fraudulent practice and something to be considered by all those who are taking these companies to task through litigation.  A company the size of M*Modal or Nuance with thousands of employees, even if it just came to 1 line a day for each of those employees, that could be as much as 10,000 lines a day they are billing for that they are not compensating the transcriptionists for.  10,000 lines a day at 10 cents a line (and we all know they charge more than that) comes to $30,000 a month they are taking in with this fraudulent practice.

We were paid by the end number of lines, not the difference between what started and what was in the finished product.

Not if the company does not pay for preexisting headings - on templates, and mine does not. NM

Do you have to use templates? - aliceann

I've never had an acct that used templates nor deducted for headings. You wouldn't be allowed to just type Hospital Course and the 4 lines and not use the template?

Wow, you are docked lines for deleting headings? - Crazy

[ In Reply To ..]
Did I understand that correctly? By deleting unnecessary headings, you start off with a negative line count? So do you get "free" lines if the headings stay in and are used? We don't have templates where I work, so I am trying to grasp what you are saying.

You understand correctly! Have to choose work type. - Template automatically loads

and line counter includes any headings already on the template as the starting point at 0 lines. Therefore, if you delete any headings, you are creating a negative line count for yourself. If the unused headings you deleted (which you are required to do) add up to say a line, then that creates a -1 line count requiring the first line you type to be used to bring you back to a 0 count before line counter will start adding lines to be counted.

Well, now I've heard it all - Crazy

[ In Reply To ..]
That is a new low. I'll be darned. The starting point should just be zero lines period - not negative if you delete unused headings. That IS criminal. Geez.

As original poster of this thread, I feel I should - add the following.

I may have misspoken when I said "nearly all" MTSOs do this. I have worked for several different nationals and most that I have worked for provide templates with headings already on them. These are lines they will bill for but won't give the transcriptionist credit for. One is always required to delete unused headings in those situations, so perhaps it would have been more appropriate to just make you aware that this is a practice to be on the look out for as apparently many of you are not provided the templates as I describe here.

That is just the start of it - MTSLAVE

That is not all they are stealing from you....

1. Check your check against how many lines you did...chances are you were shorted in one way or another.
2. You are not paid for research,or time spent reading their emails.
3. You are not paid for the work you do...to expect you to be better than God, then pay you like satan...hell no. If they paid you what you were really worth, you'd be making more than twice what you make now.
4. Tkae you pay and compare it to minimum wage/...subtract your hours and you pay from what it should be with minimum wage laws and what you are missing pay wise will make you sick.

They are screwing us out of money in MANY ways. We are just stuck working here becuase it is all we have.

MTSO are crooks...They use us. They abuse us...and in the end...they are the one kicking it comfortably while us MTs scramble for crumbs to eat.

Yet another reason why - MEs/MTs should

[ In Reply To ..]
quit worrying about unions and simply refuse to do piecework any more. The system lends itself to stealing from the employees, yet it is still considered status quo. A fair hourly wage is the only way to solve this.

I don't want templates - Crazy

I'm outta MT as soon as I finish up my training for a new field and land a job, but if it should come to pass that I need to look for another MT job before then, I will be sure to ask if the company utilizes templates. I will run far, far away from any company that utilizes templates. Sounds like a great way to rip off MTs.

That's enough for a big lawsuit. You should contact an attorney. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
All the attorney would have to do is see that the final report showed 4 lines and that you were only paid for 1. That's a blatant violation of labor laws. It's like someone who's paid hourly only getting paid for 55 minutes of every 60 minutes worked. It's not just unethical, it's unlawful.

oh, but she came here instead. outrage seems to need validation first. - NM

How Do MTs Protect Themselves From Fraudulent Companies?
May 08, 2010

The good news is that I'm all set to begin a new IC position for a company that appears to have a good reputation via the MT community as well as the BBB. The bad news is that I was working for a company with a nasty reputation for never paying its ICs on time and/or not paying its ICs at all.  The company lost one of its 2 accounts and had to lay off almost all of its ICs 1 month ago.  Now of course, they still owe me a backlog 3 paychecks. I signed a contract with them st ...

FRAUDULENT MTSOs ONLINE
Jul 05, 2012

good morning, i hope everyone had a "decent" fourth. in the past, i have worked for MTSOs where the "supervisor" was fraudulently misrepresenting the company online.  this has happened at least once.  this has led to tardy pay/not getting paid at all, a lot of heartache, etc.  it is also a potential HIPAA violation of the worst kind. before i make an employment commitment to another schmuck, I want to check the credentials of the MTSO and the person doing the hiring online and ...

Moving Practice To EMR.
Dec 22, 2009

Does Anyone Do Family Practice?
Apr 30, 2011

I have been doing transcription for about 7 years now, but almost all of that has been doing family practice work in SOAP note fashion.  When I first graduated I briefly did some work doing OP, H&P, discharges, et cetera.  I only did that for a short time and then started working at my current job. I have been with this small MTSO for 6 years doing family practice. I also did some letters and SOAP notes for peds endo for a while while doing the family practice. Anyway, over the las ...
