I want more practice - Kelley

Posted: Oct 17, 2009

I am loving the company I am working for.   I am new to the field, and they have helped me so much to develop my skills.  BUT I am currently only transcribing one specialty(rehab).  I would like to get some practice in acute care, surgical reports, etc.  I've seen several practice CDs on the net and ebay, and just wondered if any of them are worth it.  I have zero experience in other specialties except for the little bit I did during training, and I just want to develop my skills and keep practicing so that eventually I can get on another account at the company I work for.

SUM - Try that

See if you can find something that is the SUM Program. That will probably have all the different specialties. It will be worth it

I am not sure what others think, but I saw that AHDI - akhan

has a course on acute care for MTs who are working on one-specialty accounts and want the exposure and experience. You would have to dish out the money for that, and it seems expensive though.

Would taking a course, you might want to ask - Gerta

if that would qualify as experienced. I think it probably wouldn't, but I could be wrong. In my opinion, it would be best to ask around at some of these companies to see if it would help or you would be just throwing your money away. As far as AHDI, I would think their primary goal is more money for them and helping the MT would be secondary, if even that high on the list.

Don't feed the Greed Machine! (aka AHDI). - All they care about is money. nm

Did you talk to your supervisor/manager? sm - Bookworm

If you have, then nevermind : ) If not, do it! I would hope that any supe/manager would be thrilled to hear that an MT wanted to expand their knowledge. S/he will not know it unless you bring it his/her attention. See if you could have, say, 5 other report types routed to you, or something like that. If the answer is no, well, hey, you tried. A quick story: In high school I started working in a vet's office cleaning cages, etc. One day I mustered the courage to ask if I could help with the animals and was told, *we didn't know you wanted to do that.* Within a week, I was assisting with exams and running tests, etc. Moral: Don't be afraid to ask.

Sorry I couldn't help with your original question. Best of luck to you.

Thanks! - Kelley

I don't mind spending money, but I don't have much, LOL. I haven't told the boss that I want to do others just because I want to study up a bit more and actually have a little practice with it before I ask for the reports. I trained with the US career institue, and it was basically worthless. I learned a few things, but I have been studying like crazy to make up for choosing that awful program. If only I would have found this board before I started that!

Moving Practice To EMR.
Dec 22, 2009

I received a call today from a doctor that I know.  His practice is switching over to EMR, and he wants someone to coordinate that transition.  New patients are easily entered into the system, but he has a temporary need to get the old records into the EMR system.  His office staff is too busy to add this big job to their workload, and I think he correctly determined that he needs someone who can read the old office records, understand them, and then extract the info that needs to ...

Does Anyone Do Family Practice?
Apr 30, 2011

I have been doing transcription for about 7 years now, but almost all of that has been doing family practice work in SOAP note fashion.  When I first graduated I briefly did some work doing OP, H&P, discharges, et cetera.  I only did that for a short time and then started working at my current job. I have been with this small MTSO for 6 years doing family practice. I also did some letters and SOAP notes for peds endo for a while while doing the family practice. Anyway, over the las ...

I Was Taught And Practice Communication Is Key
Mar 11, 2014

Today is March 11 - that's 11 days since those of us who USE to work on a large account for OTI went POOF.  There has been little to NO communication since then.  Since March 4, I have applied for so many job postings, MT - nonMT - employee - IC it really doesn't matter I just need to make $$ and support my family!  It is very frustrating that you don't even get a canned answer "sorry, the positions are filled"  or "sorry you don't meet our specifications" ...

The Transcription Doctors - Regarding The Practice Of Penalizing Them
Jun 30, 2011

I would like to hear from current Transcription Doctors transcriptionists regarding the practice of penalizing them if they do not meet the required production rate, and also do they do the same if your QA percentage rate goes lower than what they require?  I have never heard of a company doing this before.  I don't see how they can keep people if this is true. ...

Nearly Every MTSO Engages In This Fraudulent Practice,
Oct 26, 2012

Most of us are not even aware of this, but the MTSOs have been doing it to all of us for years, and what they are stealing from us is huge.  Check this out. I will use just one report I did today to illustrate.  Template loaded for DS.  Report was half a minute long.  I am required to delete any unused headings.  All of the preloaded headings came to 200 characters.  Based on a 65-character line, that's 3.07 lines.  I had to delete all of those characters ...

Help! Looking For "practice" Website
Aug 30, 2010

Hi Everyone!  Back when I was first starting out in MT school I seem to remember there being a website where you could get a taste of what being an MT was like.  That's worded poorly, but I mean a site where you could hear a "doctor" dictating a fictional job and you could type it or just listen and get an idea.  Was I dreaming or does anyone else know what I'm talking about?  If it does exist and anyone knows about it, would you share the link with me pl ...
