How hard is it to find a decent job these days?

Of course that would depend upon your definition of a "decent" job. I don't consider 4 cpl decent but that is what the norm is in the industry even with years and years of experience.

All you would have to do is contact these companies and say I will work for 2 and 3 cpl and you will get tons of answers if you have experience and that is about where this whole industry is now. It is for pin money and not money to live on. I really do think there will be jobs at some level always even with EMR but you wont make a living anymore. It is there now actually.

There is an abundance of work here in California. I know all the MTs I went to school with are completely buried in work and are getting paid anywhere from 10-16 cpl. I am unsure of the regions the other posters are from.

Are you talking in-house? or just private ICs?

I have been looking and have seen only 4-5 MT jobs advertised in the last 6 months.

I have 15 years experience, great references and haven't gotten even a nibble.

Go to the hospital themselves or on their website, which lists the jobs available. Hoag Hospital (all work is performed in-house with lots of satellite locations) is a great place, Anaheim Hospital is always hiring, etc. The service owner who provides transcription for Mission Hospital is always hiring. I know a lot of people hiring.

I live in Southern California, and there is a shortage of qualified MTs here and a lot of work available. My friends from college are getting paid 14-16 cpl working for physicians inland. I get paid slightly less per line rate but have different work types that add up to more (i.e. canned reports/templates, etc.). Also, AHDI chapter meetings are great here, as a lot of smaller MTSOs or independents are hiring and pay better than nationals. I have even had some of the ones retiring want me to take over their accounts (but I am full). My college friend got her accounts this way though. Good luck!

When I worked for her, I NEVER had NJA. Just the opposite, all the work I wanted 24/7.

unless you can prove that rate, I don't buy it. Softscript is out of CA. They pay crap, just like the rest. What companies pay 10-16 cpl? Name them?

When you are working for yourself or on the same accounts day after day working for smaller MTSOs or physicians directly, there are certain benefits that can be extremely profitable. Also, some fields of medicine are a lot more lucrative than others. This is something you do not run across all the time working for nationals, as they usually give the "gravy" accounts to the lead MTs because it does involve following more directions.

There are several IN-HOUSE POSITIONS as well as smaller MTSOs and/or independant contractors, physicians' offices, and yes your own accounts that pay that. I did not mention the large nationals usually associated with this site that pay 10-16 cpl.

I have 15 years experience and good references. I live in the Inland Empire. I just checked on Anaheim and it does not appear they have any openings at the moment.

I moved down here about 5 years ago so have few professional contacts in the area. If it isn't too time consuming for you, perhaps you could email me some more info. TIA.

Check back with Anaheim, as they run a lot of ads, and it might just be due to the holidays right now. I think Diane Hernandez is still the hiring contact. Also, the Hoag Hospital website and they post ads next to the cafeteria before posting on their website. I emailed you the other info. Check personally with local smaller companies, where they pay better. I gave you info on obtaining your own accounts. I get a lot of calls from physicians not wanting to document into the EMR themselves and am quite busy, so there is still a lot of work out there in our area. Some pay better than others.

This poster is all over this board with the same message of HIGH wages and TONS of jobs.

I wonder if she runs a school or something. I live in SoCal and my experience has been most of the hospitals outsource, use EPIC or a combo of both. I don't see any with MT positions open right now.

Anaheim Memorial runs ads frequently for positions. I know the lady in charge. Hoag Hospital ALSO IS IN-HOUSE only.

There is so much work available down here, it is ridiculous. All the transcriptionists I know are completely buried right now and have been throughout the holiday season. We are terribly shorthanded.

Two days ago at Hoag Hospital next to the cafeteria, there were ads listed for transcriptionists. Go check, should still be there.

There are numerous ads listed on various sites for transcriptionists in California, not to mention the physicians themselves. Jeesh, my phone has been ringing nonstop since last week of physicians wanting to change services and looking for transcriptionists.

That was just a quick search.

It is fairly easy to obtain your own clients in this area as well, as most prefer to work with independent contractors than large nationals, especially smaller offices.

A great place to find work is the local AHDI chapter in Orange, CA. I have not been there in a while due to transportation issues, but it was a fabulous place to network when I did go there. They also list ads on their local chapter website. You can attend as a guest once for free, or the fee is minimal. Good luck!

There are still a lot of companies out there and physicians' offices/hospitals that hire and pay well as well as working directly for the physician. All you have to do is look and put forth some effort. I get paid 10-11 cpl on office work, 12-18 cpl on operative reports/HPs, and really good for procedure notes, per procedure like radiology.

I have been unemployed for about a year now. MQ took over my hospital and thus the entire transcription department was eliminated. Even the union could not keep this monster out. About 15 of us lost our careers. I have looked into several positions and cannot find any company that will pay me even 80% of what I am taking home on unemployment benefits!!! I cannot even get ONE decent report where I don't have to change every second word. Most of the time I end retyping the whole report because the ASR is so poor. Hi, I seem to struggle with line counts (a few years into MTing). Some accounts I am fine with and some very slow. Because of the nature of the work (and working from home), I have no way to gauge if the faster accounts are just abnormally easy or the slower accounts are abnormally hard. - Do you all (who have decent line counts) feel like you are moving like a mad person or just moving along at a decent pace? Okay, so today if I did 1320 lines and sent 93 lines to QA, which was only 2 reports all day. Wow it adds up fast! This is more than 5% for today (not sure exactly what % but I'm sure it's over 5%). I'm pretty sure this is an average day. So, I'm still confused about how much we get docked.....will I get paid 3 cents less a line for EVERY line starting when I first go over 5% in any given week, which will be the FIRST day?
