If service employees can unionize why not transcriptionists - jj

Posted: May 03, 2010

Is anyone else fed up with the way transcriptionists are paid?  Ohmigod ... they call us MLS'es as if that makes a big frigging difference.  They tell us how much they appreciate us as if empty words pay the bills.   How come they  think that our  right thumb works for free ... how many cents per page do you lose because they won't pay for spaces?  And now, because of VR, transcriptionists are getting line cuts.  Why is it, when the companies make concessions to the facilities in order to get an account, why oh why is it the transcriptionist, who has to eat the loss ... You can bet no one in the front office is taking a pay cut and yet, where would they be without the transcriptionists?   If that worthless AAMT or whatever their new handle is, was really worth a crap, they would have worked on salary standards a long long time ago.

Why Not Transcriptionists? - Silly Rabbit

This was once a wonderful, well paying, rewarding profession. We used to be able to trust our employers. MTs have been so ferociously sucker punched, so many times that we have been rendered collectively disoriented and asking "How did this happen?" We are earning a sweatshop wage. We are just beat-up. I don't know how much more of a beating the workforce will be able to take before we finally all insist on better treatment.

The technologists are rushing to phase us out, but that will not happen because of the sensitivity language as well as the exactness yet artfulness of medicine.

I can already see the big MTSOs beginning to feel the repercussions of their whip-cracking ways. It has got to get better.

Why not begin union representation for all !!! - TypoTrixi

Do not all of you see the beginning swells of a Transcription Tsunami ?!! Look at our sweatshop wages, ongoing search for "the best company" to work grovel for wages. Look at the thread of discontent each and every day on this website !! There is an evolution that is beginning to stir among all of us - we are sick at heart at what is taking place in today's profession of medical transcription and we CAN do something about it !! Where is the credibility of our represenation with what is now "AHDI" - so much for taking charge and taking action in what has become the major "stab in the heart" of the medical transcriptionist's heart ! Our profession is returning to the Dark Ages - we are being prodded to produce more and being paid close to minimum wage. Take heart !! Take Action ! We must do something to turn our profession to what it once was !!!

honey, this subject comes up ever six months and has been done to death. - union is not the way to go, read archives.

So what exactly IS the "way to go"? The current state - of MT is certainly not working! -sm

Should we all just plug our ears, cover our eyes, and keep our mouths shut? Should we just PRETEND that we're able to get by on the cpl we're paid? Should we just look the other way and ignore the wholesale selling out of a growing number of formerly middle-class workers in America? Heaven forbid, we should step on the toes of the fat cats at the top. After all, at 3 cpl, at least we're still not working for free.
(YET).

When we speak to our employers singly, they don't listen; they just tell us "like it or lump it". All the while greedily rubbing their hands together, knowing that when one of US quits, another American job gets siphoned off to another slipshod Indian service.

I personally am getting tired of watching my income fly out of my pocket, and into the pocket of a foreigner.
SO: Do all transcriptionists just sit at the RR crossing guard down .lights flashing but NO TRAIN in - TypoTrixi

There is "life" out there in transcription land ! Yet another voice that cries out in the dark!! Pleeze cannot something be done about our plight ?? Union not the answer ?? I have NEVER been pro union - nor am I suggesting that is the road to take but WAKE UP ladies & gentlemen ! we ARE at the crossroads of a train wreck !!

I was comfy and secure (or so I thought) in my telecommuting job for a hospital - decent hourly wage - bloomin benefits - had it all - PTO - yada-yada-yada but YO ! Our department ALL were blown out of our chairs - yep - you guessed it - by a major outsource company. Geeze - just think !! I'm not even making HALF of what I was before -'specially when you consider NO benefits 'cause I have chosen to work PT (my choice) but now I'm forced to consider FT to meet my expenses.

CONSIDER THIS: There IS strength in numbers - do all of us just sit and swallow the bolus that is being crammed crosswise down our gullets ?? To the recent reply to me "Honey - this subject comes up every 6 months" I say to you: Darlin - we DO NOT have to take it or lump it ! We just need to join forces - there HAS to be something or somewhere to begin. THINK !! The fear that rises its ugly head is "what if I take action - what if I sign a petition... what if... I'll lose my job and then what will I do?" Well folks - it's what we DON'T take action on that is strangling us. Again - READ the ongoing thread of disenchantment each and every day on MTstars! We are professionals - we used to love our jobs and take pride in our work. Now we are finding that the crack of the whip from the employer (faster-faster-faster production) with shrinking paychecks - why do we continue to do NOTHING about the upside-down mess we are in ! Let's put our heads together and start a grass roots path toward equality of pay for production. Other agencies have accomplished it - are we any different ????
Yeah...sure - sm

So we all say we'll band together, stick up for each other, threaten to quit our jobs so we can get things back to the standard they used to be. So just how do you think, with all of us working all over the country, not knowing anything about each other, and everyone promising to stick together, that that would actually happen? I'm not about to threaten my employer because "everyone else is" and take a chance on losing my job. C'mon, it's one thing to start a union or anything else when you got everyone working under the same roof but scattered all over the country and working for different places???? Not likely and I would never take that chance...petition or not. I gotta look out for ME because no one else will.

I believe in unionization - jm0405

Contact the Teamsters. I did. For those of you saying that will force MT work out of the country sooner...it won't if contracts forbid it. This is our only chance at getting fair wages.

What did the teamsters tell you? - Former SEIU union employee

[ In Reply To ..]
Ya wanna know why it won't work? Because we have too many variables in our work situations. We have people working in Hospitals, Dr's offices, PT offices, Imaging Centers, Psych Clinics, etc. We are employees, and IC's, we work for a large teaching hospital or just one doctor.

When SEIU goes out on strike the entire union goes out, from housekeepers, to switchboard operators, clerks to EKG techs. and they cripple a huge specific population at one time. There is no way we can do that, our demographics won't support it.

Revolt/Unionize
Apr 15, 2012

I have been an MT over 5 years now. I started out, straight from my local community college, at a whopping $0.05 a "Word" line.  But it was something to get my foot in the door. Then I was lucky enough to get hired on with a local, large, multi specialty group that paid by digital minute. My teacher in school had always told me that this was a horrible way to get paid, but it was a great opportunity and a great job! I did this till last year when the doctors decided they wanted to try t ...

OMG How Funny - Read Glassdoor Opinion Of Employees, US Versus Indian Employees!
Aug 05, 2013

I was just curious about what employees thought of Nuance on Glassdoor.  You read several US employee opinions and they reflect the morale listed on MTStars.  Scroll further down and read the opinions of the transcriptionists from India.  What a difference.  They are highly satisfied with their jobs and most have been working with Nuance for 6 to 7 years.  The US transcriptionists are very sad!!  What a difference..... ...

Transcriptionists With ADD.... I Think Im One Of Them!
Feb 10, 2010

make a living being an MT?  In addition to how low our pay has gotten, and the myriad other problems that we all deal with, if you can't focus, do you think that is cutting into your finances as well? I've always had a suspicion that I have ADD.  Was a totally hyper kid.  Daydreamer in school.  High IQ (148), labelled as "gifted" in 1st Grade, yet with each passing year did less and less well in school.  Looked out the window and zoned out more than I paid att ...

EMR's , Will This Mean The End Of Transcriptionists Or Is There Something We Can Do To Stay In
Nov 10, 2009

Ever Forget How Much Transcriptionists Really Know?? Sm
Feb 25, 2010

I am training someone and I am now reminded how far I have come, how much I have learned, and the things I take for granted and assume others know.   Basic things, just proper English, not even taking into consideration the medical terminology.  Knowing whether a sentence makes sense or not.  We really should be paid better.  But it is nice to feel smart sometimes....and you know anyone who can do this job really does have to be pretty darn intelligent.   Fello ...

I am now down to 3 companies (from 4) trying to make a living at this, wondering what I should do next.  I'd like to go get my coding diploma and move on from there as I cannot take this anymore.  Four jobs and between all of them I got $700 last week and am still waiting for checks to arrive.  I asked one of them why it wasn't DD and they said they would cut and mail the check.  Lord knows when the other one will arrive.  I don't know, don't YOU ...

Nurse Medical Transcriptionists ??

Union For Medical Transcriptionists

I know this idea has been tossed around a lot but yet nothing has been done about it (to my knowledge - if someone knows different, please correct me). Med. Transcriptionists Required To Get Flu Shots?
