Home Depot No More!!! - JW

Posted: Apr 25, 2012

I found a posting board that listed employees complaints about HD. I'm not going there to work. I don't want to get involved in it. It's very very murky there. I've had enough of that kind of thing with the last MT company I worked for. I wish there was a board to post for each MT company. I would have some things like that to say too. I ain't goin there. There are over 1000 complaints from employees and Lowes isn't any better. Go figure. Still unemployed.

Interesting that somebody should post about HD today. Please hear me out.

There's an HD close to me. Having reached the end of my MT career (finally imploded from frustration), I decided to look for work there. They directed me to their website, where I undertook to complete their agonizingly lengthy application process.

After providing almost unimaginable amounts of personal information and answering all their questions, the website timed out, and my application vanished. "No problem," I thought. "I'll just sign in with my ID and password and continue." No such luck. After 3 hours of calling, waiting on hold, and being transferred to multiple people, each one less competent than the one before, I was advised that the information could not be deleted by them and that it wasn't their problem. "Our website is secure," they assured me. Yeah, I'll bet as secure as hospital databases, huh?

Why, oh why, did I do this? I'm normally on guard. They caught me by surprise. My own fault. :(

I'm sorry you had to learn about them that way. I just started having a bad feeling after they hired me on the spot last Friday. It's funny because I went on a three-hour hike on Sunday and my legs and feet were very tired and it made me think about working there and being on my feet 5 hours a day and working all kinds of hours. I am very depressed at this point after reading all the employee complaints. It would fit right into the MT world too. I am declining today. I did do their drug test and they are doing a background check on me and that bothers me too. I went too far. Be thankful that you did not get caught up in it.

I can't believe you'd shut down an opportunity because someone complained. People will ALWAYS complain, look at this forum!! That doesn't mean there aren't very happy people, loving their job, etc.

I think you do yourself a great disservice by allowing the opinions of others to influence your decisions rather than making the decision based on your own experience.

The apartment complex I live in got horrible reviews written about it online. The place is fantastic. None of the issues online have ever been an issue for me.

I think you should make your choices based on your experience, not because someone said something bad about a company.

I agree - LeavingMT

How often do you see employees online raving? I know about 20 people that work for Walmart and love it. You NEVER hear about them in the news and 75% are female. I wouldn't work there because the stores give me anxiety (and that's one reason I don't shop there). Also a similar thing happened to my BFF years ago the apartment complex she lived in had horrible reviews. Guess what? They were from 2-3 people who lived in the same unit with so much time and hate on their hands they spent time monitoring the review sites for years and posting it. The people I know that work the Home Depot (about 5) are happy, but again I don't want to work there.

In 2011 HD had 321,000 employees - 300

[ In Reply To ..]
If there are 1000 complaints, that's 1 for every 321 people working there NOW. Just imagine how many people have EVER worked there...that universe of employees is HUGE - meaning far less than 1/321 are complaining.

Compare this to the number of people employed by the big MTSOs and the number of complaints posted on this site - I'd take Home Depot's stats over theirs any day.

Don't shut the door because of what some faceless stranger with no accountability posted on the internet. From what I've heard, HD has a generous tuition reimbursement program. Maybe you could work for them and pursue another career with their help, if you're so inclined.

My story - and regretting it.

I have a degree in another field and was in my first year of the job, a field in which first years are notoriously difficult. Every night I would come home in tears and read posts on different websites about how awful my job supposedly was. Some was true and applicable, but honestly, most of it was playing into my fear of what it MIGHT be SOMEDAY. I worked myself up into such a state that I walked away from the field. I like my job now, but I worry about how secure our industry is. If I had it to do over again, I sure wouldn't have made a major life decision based on what a bunch of strangers said in a moment of anger.

I'm done being a punching bag. The work there is very very hard and I would have to lift 50-pound bags which I value my health more than that and I'm talking hemorrhoids too. As far as I am concerned HD is a Walmart hardware store selling all the Chinese junk. BTW they get no-bid contracts from our government too and our soldiers die in Iraq for this.

Exactly what did you think working at Home Depot would entail, doing your nails?

That's like taking a job at KFC and then complaining because they kill chickens!

that I would think would not be a surpise by commen sence. Do you see the hernia - belts they are required to wear? Why

[ In Reply To ..]
not try th grocery stores if you want to stand at the checkout or do customer service? You are hte one who could not wait for the employee discount, right? Try a car dealership, plenty of nonsales jobs there.

Just keep knocking on doors.

(wouldn't put it past some here to trot over to the HD boards and start a call to strke! lol)

You seem to have an excuse for everything. Why even pretend that you are looking for work?

Better yet, why not avoid telling us about it? That way, you would not have to make excuses when they reject or fire you.
catchy phrase, like that - COM syndrome. - very contageous obviously. SM

Read one board too many.

Does anyone see that she's all in a tizzy hating this and hating that after reading this and other boards? which are probably nationwide and a drop in the bucket anyway...but she's on a fast track spiral downward and needs to breathe more, not vent. She's hyperventing. not healthy.

JW - good luck to you. Hope you feel better soon so things will look balanced again. Take care.

So you sensed my frustration with job hunting. I'm glad for that. If I don't find something soon, I want to take a little trip maybe Yellowstone Park for a breather and get a new perspective. I'm not used to being unemployed for so long. Thanks for your support.

My husband has been working at Home Depot for six months. This is his retirement job not as a career. He has worked for our State for 30 years. We are in Connecticut. He loves working there and the people. I met his coworkers at a Christmas Party and they were terrific. One of his bosses even told me to apply for a bookeeping job there because of computer background. Every Home Depot is different than the next. Just like MT companies. You need to find out for yourself.

Awww, JW - sorry to see this! - Coco

I'm sorry this worked out badly for you, JW. I agree with some here that we have to take the negatives on a message board with a grain of salt, but I certainly understand your anxiety about it. I've had to think twice about applying to some places where I've read some really bad reviews, but I do try to balance it with the knowledge that happy people don't usually post....someone who is unhappy is a lot more likely to seek a place to vent. Happy employees just go quietly about their jobs, whistling while they work, I guess! (LOL)

Still, I personally had so many complaints about my MTSO job, and then I found this forum and read others' identical complaints which made me think: "Wow, I could've written that post, almost word for word!" Makes you realize that it's not all "in your head." I heard once that for everyone who calls in to, say, a radio show and voices an opinion, there are something like 1000 people who feel the very same way. So, it does give you pause when you read so many negatives about a particular company.

I suppose it's too late now if you've already declined the job today; but if it's not, you might want to just give it a try since you've already come so far in the hiring process. If you absolutely hate it, move on at that point. You just never, ever know; but I do understand your anxiety and fear about getting stuck in another horrible job situation like the jobs in which so many MTs have been trapped.

If it's too late for HD, maybe give Natural Grocers a shot if you can get on there...and resolve to give it the old college try, with a positive attitude, and see how you land! I've run very hot and cold about some jobs I've considered applying for, and I'm not a loser or a slacker. It's just hard to open ourselves to something that's so far from our comfort zone.

Good luck to you and everyone who's trying to move on from MT.
Thanks Coco - JW

Coco you are right on. I haven't declined the HD job yet and was thinking I would go to the orientation and take it from there. I am not capable of lifting a lot of weight like mulch bags and rocks etc. I get a backache and hemorrhoids, YUCK! I don't want to work till 10 one night and have to get up and go to work at 6 the next morning. I'm on SS and just need a part-time job to supplement that and pay my bills. The last MTSO I was with for three years was a nightmare and like you I didn't know about this place to post. I felt I was the only one feeling depressed and angry. I'm bugging the Natural Grocers' manager and maybe she will get tired of it and hire me, I hope. Their pay is $1.20 more an hour than HD from what I found online,$10.00 p/h. NG has more holidays too and benefits. I have also applied for some online MT jobs. I still like to transcribe but I don't want all the hassles that go with it for such low pay. If I don't get a job soon, I want to take a little trip somewhere to clear my mind out of this and maybe get a new perspective. Thanks for your support. Will keep you posted if I attend the orientation at HD.

Home Depot, My Ticket Out Of MTing
Apr 21, 2012

Anyone wishing to start a new career, right now may be a good time to apply at Home Depot. They are hiring seasonal cashiers and I applied and I am on my way to being hired after a drug test next week. It's for 120 days with possible permanent employee. I will learn some customer service and cashiering which I feel is valuable since I have never done it with 30 years of being an MT. Hopefully, it will work into something else. It has been tough to find another job but this could just b ...

At Home MTs -

What do your QA people actually do?  I have two jobs, as I've said before.  Both outsource pieces of their work and at both I wonder just what it is that the QA people do?  At both I really wonder how the MT even got their job at all but I really wonder what the QA people do! At the hospital, we send the op reports out, probably 60 a day.  They get done by a company owned by the former Q but they claim they're done in America.  Every day we come in to 50 of t ...

Something We Workers-at-home Need To Consider...

What I Don't Like About Working At Home Right

now is that I would really love to tell somebody off!! Yes, I know that may sound childish, but this company has put my stress level through the roof, my blood pressure through the roof, and their BS has me so pissed off, if I were in an office where they were I would find great satisfaction in letting them have it verbally, not in writing.  Yes, I would be fired on the spot, but it would be so worth it.  It's just not the same when they don't have to face someone in person.& ...

Home Vs Hospital
