Health care management or IT? - MamaBear

Posted: Aug 17, 2010

I'm going back to school to get out of transcription. I currently do QA. I have a 2-year degree in health information technology and am trying to figure out whether to go get a Bachelor's in information technology and health informatics or go for a business degree with a healthcare management emphasis.  I know electronic records are taking over and health informatics is a growing field. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know with IT I'd need to keep up a bunch of certifications and that's expensive but unsure about job opportunities with a healthcare management degree.

I've heard much about health informatics. - -

A friend of mine was trying to get into the field and read me a lot of job descriptions. She had the health management experience, but not the IT experience. Either option sounds good to me. I guess it depends on whether you like management or IT better.

I have the 2-year HIT associate's degree as well, anxious to get out of MT, and I'm currently in a bachelor's degree health informatics program (they call it healthcare information systems at my college, but it's the same thing). I'm planning on getting my MBA when the bachelor's is done to maximize my earning potential. Lots and lots of growing opportunities with all the expanding EMR out there. Check the course work at your college for IT and health informatics. A lot of it at my college overlaps so they ended up making it a double bachelor's program so I'll end up with both.

Healthcare informatics - Go for it

I've worked in that end of the industry and can tell you it's going to be THE place to be. You're half-way there, go for the gold! (And the pay ROCKS!)

Thanks a lot everyone for making the decision a whole lot easier! I have 10+ years of MTing under my belt, so this is just adding on to what I've already got. I'm so excited!

Could Anyone Who Has An HRA (health Reimbursement Arrangement) Type Of Health Care
May 04, 2010

tell me how that works?  I know the insurance premiums are less than a regular health plan.  If your  company puts 500 in your account, does that mean the first few times, for example, until you use up the 500, you don't pay ANYTHING or is it the opposite...you pay the entire office visit cost until you reach that 500?  I would be so grateful for any information about this type of plan.  TIA ...

Medscribe Health Information Management
May 24, 2012

Can anyone tell me about their experience working as an IC for MedScribe, located in West Palm Beach, FL, recruiter is in Colorado? I have been offered a position with 3 different companies, and they are the one I am leaning toward. Flexible schedule and Monday-Friday shift is a big plus. The pay isn't as good as some others, but getting the hours I want may be worth it. Just wanting to hear from someone who currently works for them or has very recent experience - both the pros and cons. ...

I Wonder What This Health Care Reform Will Do
Mar 23, 2010

I pay very little attention to what Washington does, but I have to wonder if this new health care reform that dear old Obama has finally pushed through is going to affect our jobs and pay rate.  My husband gets good insurance through UPS, and he says that it will make his insurance less because according to this bill, everyone gets the same coverage.  At least that's how he explained it. So is this going to cost doctors and hospitals money, and if it does, is that going to make t ...

Ascend Health Care - Payment

Article - Health Care Law Prohibits Data
Jun 27, 2010

Moderate, please don't move this to offshore board. It needs to be seen by more people. Exerpt: "The new law imposes limits on outsourcing by American insurance companies and medical service providers. In addition, several categories of data are prohibited from flowing offshore. As a result, many Indian outsourcing firms have begun setting up shop in the United States. America’s outsourcers are now outsourcing back to America." Another Sad Option For Medical Care Is Charity Care. Work With The People

Most Saint hospitals and others actually operate as non-profits, and for what they are screwing us over in taxes unpaid, they can afford to help out folks with their bills and still give their CEOs generous stock options and obscene salaries! Not Management
Mar 08, 2010

I am not management!  You just don't get it.  I hate to say it, but many of you are too miserable here to see the good... for whatever reasons.   I am an MT.  I'm tempted to put my real name and MQ e-mail, but what for.  I've said what I did because I am doing okay, because I have been through frightening changes before with MQ and it has always worked out.  It seems foolish to tell you my real name though, as you mostly are a bunch of whining loser ...

Is It Some New Management Technique Not To Say Thank You To
Sep 22, 2010

I'm a high producer and self starter. I don't need hand-holding.  But, geesh, it's just human nature to want to hear a sincere, individual compliment for a job well done sometimes, if for no other reason than it motivates me to do a better job and make the company more money.  At some point, it seems most management has started to treat the worker bees as enemies instead of part of the team.  It's short-sighted and lazy, and I know it has to be costin ...

Dear Management,  I have enjoyed working for you for the past several years ... best place I have worked in during my 20+ years as an MT.  HOWEVER, why do you find it ethical to find ways to sneak in the back door and take money out of my pocket, thinking I will not notice.   Yes, I understand, you need your own line counting system because the one I type in for the client gives me partial credit for headers and footers, and of course I shouldn't get credit for those after ...

Incompetent Management
Jul 05, 2011

After years of going through this, finally I have no other conclusion to draw but that it's pervasive.  I am talking about incompetent management. They talk about "the team" this, "the team" that.  But they have NO concept of what teamwork is, so that is just lip service. If I make a very simple request for something that will make the work flow more efficient and help everyone, I am either blown off completely or told "we will TRY to do that, but we're ...
