So... Who has heard from their employer about the Affordable Health Care Act? - anon

Posted: Sep 28, 2013

I got an email a few days ago plainly stating that my employer would not be offering health insurance to its employees, and also providing specific information regarding how I could access the "marketplace" for insurance.

Anybody else?

3 days till October 1st, lol!

this may be the new wave - braindead

Here's part of an article I saw (and I think Home Depot is doing the same thing):

"Drugstore giant Walgreen is joining IBM and a growing number of other companies sending their employees shopping for health insurance on a private health insurance exchange. Walgreen, the parent company of eponymous drug store chain Walgreens, will continue to pay the same contribution it always has, but some 120,000 employees will be able to choose from one of up to 25 options, reports the AP."

I hope for their sake they have fewer than 50 employees..... - sm

I was grateful for the information. I am looking into whether or not they are supposed to contribute based on their size.

The large companies who are subsidizing the payments and referring their employees are going to save significant money and more than likely, so is the employee, most of whom are contributing a portion of the cost now.

And October 1 is an exciting day but I'll be happy to see January 1 when I can actually USE the insurance I'll be signing up for on October 1. My adult children will all be signing up too. Pretty exciting stuff!

The govt is not an insurance company, the govt is now, however, making the rules that benefit us as health care consumers. Why the dislikes?

Have you looked at how much you will have to pay for insurance on the exchanges? It is so much less and you get so much more than any insurance plan any of these MTSOs ever offer. Are you crazy? Or do you just live in red states where the politicians have convinced you Obamacare evil?

The fact that every company providing insurance to an employee needs to pay so much per employee for this means they get to pay them less. Is that so great? It also makes our companies unable to compete in the international marketplace. I bet India does not require Nuance to provide health care, not sure if the govt does or what, but in my opinion the kinds of insurance we were offered before, coupled with the dwindling wages, meant I opted out of insurance simply because of not being able to afford it.

So excuse me if I am glad too for once to have reasonable premiums, copays, and out of pocket costs, plus the tax credit.

Wrong! Not here! My husband is losing insurance - through employer b/c of Obamacare,

[ In Reply To ..]
and that is basically a pay cut since that was part of his job benefit. We will now pay about 600 bucks a month out of pocket.
Yeah, well, I know they're not going to automatically - apply the difference
[ In Reply To ..]
But it should, over time, give them more reason to bump up pay because sometimes health insurance cost to company is almost as much as the salary!

Have you the option to get your entire family on an exchange? Sometimes that works out cheaper. Or is your husband's insurance paid completely by the company?

I am sorry things are changing for some people negatively, but if you look at the exchanges, the bright side is that the copays and OOP are usually much better than most insurance companies.

I think the people who have great, cheap insurance are the ones who might be the only ones disadvantaged by this, and that is precious few people nowadays, but sorry if that is you.
And just wait for the shortages to begin. The average wait for care in Canada is 18 months. SM - mtwith6yearstogo

There will be less doctors to take care of more patients.

Eventually people will opt out of buying insurance from companies because of the price which will put them out of business, and the only option we will have is the government. More people wanting something that is less available. More and more doctors are leaving because of Obamacare.

I love when y'all get on here and just throw out stupid comments for the sake of sounding like you know what you're talking about. There is NOT an 18-month wait for care in Canada, that's ridiculous. My sister and brother both live in Canada and cannot say enough good about their healthcare.
You are absolutely right about health care in - Canada, they love it
[ In Reply To ..]
Several years ago I traveled to Canada. This was when the so called Obamacare was first being discussed. Knowing they had I took notes from anyone I could talk to about this. Oh, by the way, talked also to a guy from Australia who was vacationing like me. They have the same type insurance. I "interviewed" so to speak people on the plane going there, while I traveled over Canada. The first people on the plane, a couple, the wife had had breast cancer diagnosed. She told me within the first week she was in the hospital having surgery and had tremendous followup afterwards. Met a girl in our group who walked with cane, had had leg surgery prior and eye surgery, again praise for the system. I met not one single solitary person in the entire time I was there (and interviewing, taking copious notes) who could not praise it enough. They laughed about the US calling it "socialism" medicine, knew about the fear brought up here about older people being put out to farm so to speak. I took my notes when I returned and wrote here exactly what I found out. No one had to wait months to have care, not 1 single person. People might not have believed me but I sat out to document exactly what was said and what I found out was unbelievable because of what we had been led to believe here.
Meant to say, guy from Australia has so called Obamacare - and he also loved it!
[ In Reply To ..]
No one was against the medical care they had, no one waited months for their care, everyone had top care, loved.
Try using some facts... - mtcanada
[ In Reply To ..]
The previous poster was right on the money when she talked about waiting times in Canada. The wait here for knee/hip replacements can be up to 2 years. Waits in the ER are typically hours. In one instance about 2 years ago, a man died in a chair in the ER. While many, many people do not have issues with our healthcare system because they have had good luck, many people have terrible experiences. Don't kid yourself, our healthcare system is FAR from perfect and it is a running statement here, 'don't get sick'. I thought you should hear it from a Canadian!
Thanks Canadian MT for a factual post. - anon

I do know that when I worked for a major teaching hospital in New England, we were a regular spot for wealthy Canadians seeking healthcare, yearly executive physicals, etc. because of (they said) the quality of healthcare and wait times in Canada. They would rather pay out of their own pocket (not hearsay; this is my firsthand experience as I worked in patient care for 10 years before becoming an MT).
Canadian Healthcare - mtcanada
[ In Reply To ..]
Thank you for pointing that out. It is a fact that many Canadians travel to the US for some procedures because they need it done NOW, not 2 years from now. Many of us here are pushing for a public/private system. It is a real hot-button issue here. Sure, you will talk to people who don't want private because they are afraid of the unknown and they think it will be the end of our "wonderful" system. They won't listen to the debate. The only people who will have to pay for it are the people who can afford it and want to, and it will free up the over-burdened public system and lessen wait times.
I strongly encourage all of the readers here to do their own research... - mtwith6yearstogo

Did exactly what you said, talked with probably 20+ people while in Canada including that guy from Australia who had same type and loved it and took notes, so you are right, do research, really good research, go to Canada like I did and find out.

...will say that in almost every single report I transcribe/edit there are LONG waits for hip/knee, replacements and many, many other procedures. Now many life-threatening things from what I've seen are "triaged" in order of importance so that is perhaps why many you spoke with with serious medical conditions were treated promptly, but as someone who actually hears these stories and types/edits them every single day for a major medical facility in Canada, I can say there are HUGE waits for most things. Tons of reports I do have the physician stating the patient will be put on a "list" and many even flat out state in the reports that they have advised the patient that the wait times are 18 months to 2 years out.

I work for the "M" and got actual paper mail full of propaganda for this horrid new "healthcare" act. I am so offended I plan to send it right back to them and ask to be removed from their mailing list. This is a travesty and I cannot wait for the entire "system" to implode and take those who wrote it with it. Have a HEALTHY day, because you sure are not going to stay healthy for long with this new law. God bless you all.

Call them what you want, but for insurance purposes, their plan and cost can't be beat by any of these other MT companies.

In my state, the lowest price bronze plan with a large deductible is $367 a month. Right now my husband carries me and our daughter on his plan at a very reasonable rate of $176. If his company now decides to no longer cover spouses, he will still pay $176 for family plan with daughter, but now I will have to find $367 a month for my insurance. There's no way to accommodate that in my budget.

Make sure you find rates for your age, not the average rate. Those are mostly based on young people's rates.
Right... sad. ..Speaking of YOUNG people, they must - buy into Obamacare or it will fail..
[ In Reply To ..]
The young people I know without insurance just plan to pay the 95 dollar a year penalty and still purchase no insurance. If this is the trend, Obamacare will go under very fast anyway.

And the rates in the WSJ are interesting in that they all go up. Even if we are older, we have children and grandchildren who will have to cope with this.

Obama Care/ Affordable Healthcare Act - BB

[ In Reply To ..]
Please go to Healthcare.gov and access information regarding the ACA (ObamaCare Plan) Beginning Oct 1, you may set up an account and search for affordable health care options, and there is also a tax credit that can be applied immediately towards your premiums. You and your family may even pay lower costs than you already pay. You will have rights and protection that you may not have from the insurance you have, or grandfathered in. Just inform yourself and read all the facts before getting upset about all of this.

with a fine of $2000 per employee per year, so employers will hire temp workers instead of full time. How is this good for the economy?

Temps - MT headed

[ In Reply To ..]
It depends on the employer. I started my medical records job as a temp but have been there a year and receive full benefits. A lot of temp jobs work into full time gigs. Regardless, under the ACA, any employer with 50 or more employees has to provide health insurance; it does not say that they have to pay the premium. If Obamacare gets off the ground, temp workers can purchase insurance through the exchanges if they can get a better deal. Everyone has to have insurance or pay a fine. Hiring temps can actually be good for the economy if it puts more people to work. It also gives the employer and the employee the chance to see if they are going to be a good match.
