the minimum wage is higher than $8/hr having a difficult time finding a job? I am hoping to hear that there are MTs recently laid off or quit who have fairly easily found another MT job, living in a state (such as CA, WA, OR etc) where the minimum wage is higher than average. I am wondering if companies are ignoring applicants from these states? I so hope I am wrong.

I'm afraid you're probably right. CA has been - shunned by MTSOs for years. :(

I live in WA. I don't work for an MTSO but I was laid off from my on-site MT job and moved into a different non-MT position. When I was looking for MT work, I had no trouble with companies not wanting to hire me. MT jobs are scarce because of outsourcing and VR. The wages may be an issue, but there just are not many jobs left. We have a few in-house MTs locally and everyone makes well more than our state's minimum wage of 9-something an hour; even records clerks are well above minimum wage, and we are in a small town. I can't speak for my neighbors in Oregon, but in Washington there are other reasons why MTSOs don't hire WA residents. It's difficult to obtain a business license, the labor laws are strict and people doing business in our state are heavily taxed; basically it's just too expensive when they may only be dealing with a few employees. However, there are still plenty of MT companies doing business here. If you are only making $8 an hour as an MT it's time to hang it up anyway.

Has anyone else had trouble with companies not hiring because of state laws with Workmans Compensation. I did all the testing required for a company and then I get an email back stating they do not hire people from Ohio due to the workers comp laws. It would be really nice for companies to take the time and list the states they will not hire from so we do not waste our time doing unnecessary testing. The company is Synernet ...

It's about time somebody starts this, or has the guts to make such a law and enforce it. I'd love to see it here. I would like to know exactly where else you would get it from when you're doing 8 hours a day, 5 days a week full-time job for one company for the past 20+ years.
