Coding outsourcing - Coder too

Posted: Sep 30, 2012

MTs come here for opinions on whether coding will go the way of transcription.   Many coders give their opinion.  Many feel safe, some don’t know, and many see many opportunities within the field to move about and are not worried.   There you have it.  Why argue?  The MTs argue that the coders are wrong and try to show that it will happen and is happening.  We gave our opinion, we know how we feel, and we are IN the field.  Are you trying to warn other MTs that this is happening and not to go into coding?  What is the point of the outsource howling?  Do you think people will base their decision on this board alone and your statements?  I don’t get it.  I am sure each MT or anyone considering coding will look at much more to make their decision.   Get the opinion of coders and also go on your way and do your research.  If you don’t like the sum of all the information you find, don’t go into coding.   Yowl, yowl, yowl...  meanwhile, we have got a lot of coding to do.

Not scaring me off - CMT/current coding student

[ In Reply To ..]
I did exactly that, a ton of research, and decided to transition to coding. School is definitely not easy but it sure beats how I feel about what has happened to medical transcription. Well, my break is over. It's back to the books for me!

So you haven't seen M*Modal's coding ads, I take it. - n/msg

Sure did and still not scaring me off - CMT/current coding student

At my age (48) and (again) after must research, I decided that coding was the way to go FOR ME. Like I said, when it's all said and done, I will STILL be a CMT and hopefully a CPC and/or CCS. This works for me and these negative comments about M*Modal and coding do not.

I think my days are done on this Coding Board. It used to be so pleasant to come here and read the comments from actual (working) coders. Unfortunately, the negativity of some medical transcriptionists seems to have spilled over and, quite frankly, I'm not interested. I think I'll spend my time on the coding boards.

You gotta wonder - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
what their goal is? What are they trying to accomplish? Trying to run us off these boards, less traffic, trying to shut the boards down? I too grow tired of these drive-by insults, put-downs, and incessantly trying to start fights, the same things week after week. On this board, it seems to be about coding being outsourced or offshored, as the OP talked about. I too am not scared off by any of this prattle. I just wonder what their objectives are, what they are trying to do. I do see less people responding to them, maybe they will get bored and leave, but not likely as long as people do respond.
I think - anon

they are just so miserable that the only way they think they can find happiness is to spread the misery around with a bulldozer.
I agree. - Coder

I agree with that. They seem to be very unhappy and interested in dragging others down with them.

If you notice, they stir the pot, get about a week's worth of turmoil out of it, and the minute it dies out below they come to the top, stick their spoon into something else, and start stirring again.

Negative talk shouldn't concern us. We are cognizant of the facts and realities of our field.

My suggestion is to do just as we did here . . . acknowledge their unhappiness, affirm or confidence, and not address the issues they raise. No explanations, no arguments, and no reinforcement.
I think they just see history starting to repeat itself. - NM

They THINK they see that because they have only a hammer - Everything looks like a nail.
[ In Reply To ..]
They think they see that, but they don't realize that they aren't seeing the whole picture.

They also seem to have an underlying agenda . . . to bring the MTSO-offshoring-VR-unionize-lawsuit-strike-hate-hate-hate to this board.

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Whatever. Don't protect what you have, and what you've - worked so hard to achieve. Let MTSOs steal it.

(And give it all to India for pennies on the dollar). You should be fighting hard, NOW, to assure that this career stays in the US where it belongs.

Coding outsourcing - Skeptical

A number of MTSOs offer coding services; Amphion is one that comes to mind and I know there are others. Some facilites use them to handle overflow coding, some use their consulting services. Some coders work as traveling coders/consultants, some coders work for these companies at home as employees. The certification exams can no longer be offered in India due to malfeasance/cheating issues. M-Modal is only a small piece of the pie, you would know that if you took the time to look at the big picture.

It's almost amusing - Watching this conversation

[ In Reply To ..]
It's frankly as if we're just watching history repeat itself. There was a day when the MT world said nothing would ever go outside of the hospital, then it was nothing outside of the town, then nothing outside of the state. Oh yes, then it was nothing outside of the country.

I don't think asking questions is unreasonable at all. If coding can be done remotely, and it can, there's every possibility it can go offshore or be outsourced. That's just reality. It doesn't mean you shouldn't consider it, it just means you're asking questions and trying to go in with your eyes wide open.

My suggestion is find a site to ask those questions where you're not beat up for them; there are many knowledgeable coders in the coding Facebook or LinkedIn groups and you might get more reasonable discussion.

Outsourcing/offshoring Of Coding
Jun 19, 2011

I've been an MT for over 20 years and am seriously considering switching my focus to coding. I believe that I would be a good fit and am excited about starting a new career in the not-too-distant future. My main worry, though, is that in some of my research, every now and then something will pop up about coding going the way of transcription, and by that I mean all the offshoring/outsourcing that has been done, thereby driving wages down. Can anyone here offer any insight into this? I woul ...

DSG/MedQuist/Outsourcing
Jan 24, 2010

Can anyone tell me how closely affiliated DSG and MedQuist are, and if DSG outsources to India?  We all know MQ outsources, but I'm having trouble getting information. Thinking about working for DSG, but I don't want to go anywhere that has any affiliation whatsoever with MQ.  I've heard DSG uses MQ's software, just wondering how far they are in cahoots with the Q on other things, like outsourcing to India. ...

Outsourcing To India
Jun 15, 2010

On numerous occasions over the past year I was told by my CCM that the reason they are outsourcing to India is because there is a shortage of qualified MTs because the average age of an MT is 55 and they are starting to retired.  Like the infamous ***** and is ridiculous claim about 650 lph on ASR, that MTs have an IQ of about 6.    ***** Do not name/identify individuals.  Moderator ***** ...

Hospitals/outsourcing
Oct 15, 2010

Currently, I have a FT job w/a very large hospital, actually multiple hospitals combined.  We all once worked in the office; however, they sent us all home to work.  There are about 130 hospital transcriptionists.  We also outsource a lot of work to a large company.  There have been so, so many changes - everything from new management, VR, pay for production.....Communication amongst co-workers has disappeared.  Management doesn't respond.  I'm really wond ...

Ever Wonder What Clients Would Think About Doing Their Own Outsourcing?
Oct 26, 2010

Just thinking out loud here.  I know many practices probably do their own outsourcing to MTs at home. Why not more?  It must be cheaper for them with higher quality work, personalized service, etc.  Some hospitals even hire MTs to work from home rather than use an MTSO. How can we, as the MT community, reach more clients/practices.  Surely they have a liason in the office who handles the direction of their transcribed reports, in-house editing; someone who could do ...

Outsourcing Signs??

Hi everyone, new to this forum.  I work for a hospital and a lot of us are getting a bad vibe lately, we work from home but we are noticing little things happening, we keep losing our connections, Joblister keeps disconnecting and we are told the firewall is being updated.  Was wondering if anyone noticed little things like this before they were outsourced.  Thank you ...

Outsourcing To Nuance

It certainly can't hurt to be heard given that they are followed by 80,000 people, right?  Pointing out the deficiencies & danger in outsourced work, identifying who the guilty parties are (Q among others), and why it's a reprehensible practice certainly couldn't do anything at this point bu ...

HELP! My Hospital Is Outsourcing To Medquist
Dec 14, 2011

Hi Everyone - Question, my department of about 13 MTs were just notified last week that our hospital will be out sourcing to MQ. Now MQ was there and offered all of us positions. My question is, after looking at all these posts and from our own investigating, is MQ a good company or not? We are going from an hourly rate with the hospital to 9 cpl for typing and 4 cpl for VR and then 3 cpl for master editor or something. What we have found is that MQ is not such a "great place to work" as our hos ...
