CTC Coding online training - coding curious

Posted: Dec 15, 2014

I am looking at various online options and have found CTC through the AAPC website.  I was hoping someone might have some experience or knowledge of this training program that they would be willing to share.  TIA!

Would you please tell us the actual name of - the school?

Never heard of it before, but if you will tell us what CTC stands for, we can look at it and advise.

Googled it, but it could be several things.

Hmm ... - never heard of them before.

Never heard of them before. It looks as though they "re-sell" coding courses produced by AAPC and Career Step. Not saying that is a bad thing, but just want you to be aware that you can go directly to the AAPC if you want to take their course ... it is the same course.

AAPC instructor training program basically enables you to pay to license their course materials and keep paying to renew.

I noted that the website said taking the AAPC course gives you an 85% chance of passing the AAPC certification exam. That comes directly from the AAPC itself--they are just repeating the AAPC figures for their own courses. It is supposed to impress you, but you should be clear about what it really means. Stated objectively, it doesn't look so good. It means that out of every 10 students who complete the course, between 1 and 2 (i.e., 1.5) fail it. That is almost 1 out of every 5.

So, 85% is not such an impressive number. To get the point across, would you eat at a restaurant where it was known that *only* 85% of diners did not get food poisoning? No. You would not want to drive up with 10 guests knowing that at least 1 and possibly 2 would end uP in the ER. Or that 1 of your family of 5 would become deathly ill from the meal.

The AAPC certifications have another problem, which is that 25% of newly certified credential holders cannot find a job. So, if you happen to be one of the 4 out of 5 who manage to pass the exam, another one of you can't find work. That makes your chances look less inspirIng. Now, when 10 of you go into dinner, 1.5 die on the spot, while another 2.5 linger painfully. The end result is that only 6 of the 10 who started survive to get a job. Almost HALF don't make it.

Getting the CCS helps overcome that, but you will have to take a course that qualifies for it. The CareerStep course they offer only prepares you for the CCA ... it is right there on the website.

Online Medical Coding School - Dorothy

I am working through the Career Step program right now and I think it is one of the best choices out there. Their Medical Billing and Coding program is AHIMA approved so I know when it comes time for testing that I have covered the correct material to get certified. I had looked at a similar program through my local community college, but it lasts two years and would have cost me $15,000!

I am also very excited about graduating from the course because Career Step has recently partnered with a company called IOD who hires Career Step graduates for remote coding jobs.

They have an offer right now where you can get a free laptop or $300 off when you sign up. Here is the link for that offer:

Online Training BIG Gaps...
Feb 01, 2010

O.K. I'm a "senior" woman...(been 29 for years till my daughter became 30...brat) retraining in MT/Coding/Billing after lay-offs in IT. I'm finding significant gaps in my online training and I'm getting worried because I see all the job postings "must have 3 years, 2+ etc. experience" and wonder if: a) I'll be able to get a job b) have the requisite training due to gaps in coverage at my online school. I've got a million questions. I did great in terminology (98% avg) an ...

Which Online Coding Program
Aug 17, 2010

How does one know which online coding program to take when they all seem pretty good, besides the price difference? I specifically want to know about AHIMA or Career Step from someone who has graduated and found a job. I know they have testimonials on their website, but how does one really know?  I was thinking about either their program or the one from AHIMA, which seems a lot longer, but apparently with either you will be able to sit for the credentialing exam, and they seem to be close in ...

Can You Take Online Classes For Coding?
Dec 20, 2010

I'm new to this board so bear with me.  Having been a MT forever it seems, I'm thinking of making a switch to coding. At one point I was even hired as an entry level coder, learning on the job, but when i position came open in transcription took that as it paid better. In hindsight wish I had stuck with the coding as then could have gone either or even both ways.  My problem would be having to actually "go" to a school in person , but i would want something reputable, not som ...

Can anyone please tell me which online coding school is the one to go to.  I have been in transcription for the past 10 years and I am literally terrified about what is going on with this business.  I still need something at home because I have little ones still running around.  I know coding is very hard to get into but so was transcription when I first started so I am willing to make the transition.  I was literally in tears yesterday when it was the 4th consecutive day wit ...

One Thing I Wish For Online Coding Program
Jun 07, 2012

I am currently attending Andrews School's coding program and I truly do love it.  There are still some things that confuse me a bit and sometimes I have wished there were "training" or lecture videos.  By taking this course, I have realized that I am a visual learner and have found that just by having to read everything, sometimes I have to go over it and over it to make sense of it, which then sets me back as far as time and then I have to rush to get all of my assignments comple ...

Any advice for getting some training in Coding/Billing or MTE training?  I have been unemployed for over a year.  Some schools will allow you to take advantage of the WIA program.  Looking for perhaps some advice on which way to go.  I am almost 57 years old and not sure which direction to head.  Thanks! ...

MM Offering Coding Training
Mar 10, 2014

it says if we qualify we will have three months of training, then spend three months in their apprentice program, and then will be given positions with them as coders.  We then have to work for them for 2 years or pay back for the program.  It doesn't talk about compensation or any certification.  Do you think this is a good idea? ...

MT Considering Coding/billing Training
Mar 13, 2014

I have been an MT for seven years and for the most part do enjoy the work, but find the "feast or famine" nature of the work difficult to make a decent living.  I will soon be divorced and won't have my husband's income to help support the house.  I have been thinking about training for medical coding and/or billing and am looking into different online courses.  I was considering a bundled course at MedicalBillingCourse.com.  Has anyone completed this course an ...

Coding Pay After Training And Apprenticeship Is
Mar 13, 2014

My HDSM answered my question about pay as follows......"pay is structured differently and is hourly.  Initial pay is based on experience with the growth potential to be more than transcription."  How do you all interpret this?  I say it means that there's the possibility pay will be less than benefit rate to start.  No one will have enough "experience" to justify anything higher than their minmum pay rate.  Feedback welcome :-) ...

Going To Start Training In Coding ASAP
Jul 07, 2013

I am going to start training in coding ASAP.  I have been a transcriptionist for many years in house, and it is time for me to go.  My hospital does not offer tuition assistance for coding.   I need advice.  CCS versus CPC -- which is better paying or is there a difference?  I work with someone with a CPC-A.  Is that apprentice degree something you HAVE to do, because I'd rather avoid that as much as possible.  CareerStep Versus Andrews -- From what I can tell, CareerStep is affilli ...

MT Looking To Take A Course In Either Medical Billing Or Coding To Have Something Else For Training

Free Coding Training For Vermont Residents
Jan 17, 2015

See the link below for an article in Health Data Management about free coding training in Vermont.   I don't know anything else about it, or how to contact them or apply, and I have no opinion on whether the program, the company involved, or the associated job offer are good, morally upstanding, free-range vegans, or potentially associated with off-planetizing to venusians in 2243.   I do think anything free is worth trying.  You have nothing to lose.       ...

HIT Training But No Jobs - Should Have Studied Pure Coding
May 11, 2015

We all learn from our mistakes. Some of us just take longer.  After bumbling around for several years with HIT training, etc., it's time to get serious and go for a coding certificate.  What a waste these past several years have been and still not even close to being prepared for a CCS or a job as a coder.  Starting over again but doing it right this time. In order to get a coding job, you need that CCS. The rest was just filling in time and wasting money. ...

Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...
