my rant to TransTech - ttmt

Posted: Apr 19, 2011

With this hand-slap email, "...We understand some of them are unnerving, but it is everyone's responsibility to do whatever comes in queue timely.  Every now and again we are going to lose TAT for one reason or another, but it cannot be for this reason.  It is pretty hard to explain to our clients that our loss of TAT was due to MTs avoid certain jobs. "

I'm just a little curious, TT Boss Lady, does this apply to the 2 MTs on this account who are fed OP notes exclusively all day long? Guess not. They get the cream of the crop and always will.  Your favoritism is blatantly obvious. Rules apply to everyone - except them. Go figure.

Maybe if everyone on the account did the jobs as they came in the queue, you wouldn't have an issue with some jobs going out of TAT. Just saying.

Cherry picking vs assigned work - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know about favoritism within the company. I know I get all different kinds of work on my account, ops included (quite frankly, there are a lot of MTs who don't like ops and don't do well with them). Maybe the client has requested that the ops get top priority, I don't know. Do you?

On the other hand, cherry picking is quite a different, and very irritating, matter. I was perhaps on the "bottom end" of said cherry picking, and in my opinion, those who are guilty of that shouldn't really call themselves MTs/MTEs, or whatever. You complete the work that is in your queue, plain and simple. Are we frustrated that pay has decreased? Sure, who wouldn't be, but this is certainly not limited to this company alone. They are simply trying to stay in competition with other companies who off-shore and underbid, and it goes beyond the MT companies. This demand for lower prices comes from the clients as well who have to deal with less and less compensation from insurance companies.

What is not fair is that some are doing the picking themselves and leaving the more difficult work for those who have enough respect for the profession, and their coworkers, not to do so.

And, no, I am not a suit or management in any capacity.

Do you know what their contract states? Maybe - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
they were hired to do op notes. You have no way of knowing what agreements have been made between management and another employee.

contracts - ttmt

[ In Reply To ..]

I have the confidence of one of the leads on the account who verified the "favorites."  She agrees that it's not fair to the rest of the MTs on that account, but there's nothing she can do about it.

Management knows what's going on and has lied to me about it. I print all key emails that may come in handy some day and also screen prints of my proof if it ever has to go to court.

They tell me that they can't/don't assign specific work types because they have to stay in TAT. I just document anything and everything I can to cover my tail for the time if I ever make a very stupid move and get so frustrated that I call them on it and then get fired soon after because I'm "not a good fit any longer" or whatever.

I honestly thought I found "my" place at TT and that they were on the up and up with their MTs. After all, didn't most of them start their careers in MT? Anyway, I actually cried when I found that they had lied to me. I felt so betrayed. I know there is no perfect place to work, but this was the closest I had come in my 30+ years of work experience. The bubble burst and I felt so sad about it.

Don't mind me. I just have to vent every so often and then I'm good for a month or two. LOL.

Thanks for listening to my pity party rant.

Still apples and oranges - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Sigh... Anywhere you go, there will be favorites for any number of reasons, be it they are willing and able to kick in extra when extra is needed, or maybe they have expertise in certain areas that will ensure best turn-around time for those work types with the least amount of errors. I've been doing this 35+ years too. It's never been different anywhere I've ever worked.

The bottom line is this: It doesn't matter what management assigns to whom, as far as I'm concerned. That's their business, not mine. My concern is having plenty of work, which I've managed to have for the most part (part and parcel of this business). What will make me extremely angry is when another transcriptionist, who has no authority to do so, takes it upon her/himself to willingly and knowingly ditch difficult dictators/jobs and lets it go to another transcriptionist. That's just pretty darn low.

Seriously, this is major deflection tactic. If you've been cherry picking, at least have enough respect for your fellow MT to stop and do your share of whatever comes up in your queue. If you haven't, I think you are way too invested in this matter.

Bottom line, I think you will drive yourself crazy if you continue on this e-mail-saving gambit, etc. on this issue. Seriously, get outside and get some fresh air or find a hobby. From what I've seen, paywise, there isn't a whole lot better out there, and if there is, you can bet MTs will be holding onto those jobs tightly. And, if you can find one, grab it!
apples and oranges - ttmt
[ In Reply To ..]

No, it's not a deflection technique or any kind of technique.  I don't cherry pick.  Never have and never will.  Work is work, as far as I'm concerned. I've been audited twice and got 99.6% on one and 99.8% on the other. I've always voluntered and helped out when needed. I'm an extraordinary MT and they know it. I'm just not a BFF with the big-D or whoever made that decision.

I've never lied to my employer - ever. I was just stating how disappointed I was to find out they lied to me.

It is, in fact, my business when it comes to my pay.  When 2 MTs are getting almost 90% of the account's OP notes, they get to cruise through their day while the rest of us are pounding away.

It is, in fact, my business when we are staring at the screen and waiting for work and these 2 are doing their regular line counts.  Not long ago, we were struggling and were grabbing each job as it came in on our secondary and tertiary accounts and flexing in order to make lines. When work is low, we're told to check every 15 or 30 minutes or so.  That makes for a very long day.  I had to use PTO some days because the work was so scarce, and sitting at my desk on and off from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. just to get minimum lines is just not healthy.  When this was going on, these 2 favs didn't see any change in their workload, didn't leave their main account and worked their "normal" day.

If TT is going to play the game that way and if they are going to have favorites, I want them to be straight with me.  Tell me outright, and then I can accept those terms or leave.  Just don't lie to me and think I don't know what's going on.  Like Judge Judy says, "Don't piddle on my shoe and tell me it's raining."

I will continue to protect myself with emails, especially when it comes to the workload and my check.  I haven't thought of it as some sort of gambit, but I've certainly been around long enough to know that no one is looking out for me but me.

I do get plenty of fresh air, thanks for asking.  I also have a couple of hobbies, a wonderful family and a few close friends to keep me busy after work hours.

who are you talking about - nmn

[ In Reply To ..]
What lead and what 2 MTs are favorites? How do you know this? From your lead? Very poor lead if that is so. What are the initials of the lead and the initials of the two MTs if you are so certain of this?

I don't work for TansTech, but I have several accounts where.... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I just work on certain work types. The other work types do not come to me no matter what order their in. Maybe there are people who just work on op notes in that account.

First of all, you are all assuming that the original poster is telling - GI Jane

[ In Reply To ..]
the truth AND knows what he/she is talking about. I have been with TT for several years and I do not believe this kind of stuff. My experience with them has been nothing but positive. Do I believe that they play "favorites" and feed certain MTs the gravy jobs? Nope! Maybe there are MTs that do only specific work types and that's what they were hired for.

I don't understand people like this who seem to only want to cause trouble and stir the pot. Why? Do you have nothing better to do with your time? If you really have a problem or a question, why not call and ask them rather than doing this here in this forum? Don't you think that would be a better use of your time - or is it your intention to cause trouble?

I think we should all take a step back here, see this for what it is and reach our own conclusions. This company has done nothing but go out of their way to treat us well, avoid offshore and try to keep jobs in the US and this is the thanks they get? Think about that!

reply - ttmt

[ In Reply To ..]

Even if I knew their names, I would never give names of MTs on any public board.  Besides, how would I know their names?  Anyone who works at TT knows that we don't have access to the names of other MTs.  Why would you even ask for that kind of information?  I mean, how would that give you the proof you want?  I only know the 6-digit number of the MTs.

I have a very good lead and she's a good person.  I'd never call her out on this board to be micromanaged by her bosses and possibly put her job in jeopardy.  Why would I do that?  I don't play it that way.  The suits monitor this board and obviously get their feathers ruffled if something is said that they don't like (see posts above).  Remember the gourd?

It really doesn't matter to me if anyone believes me or not.  In fact, I never asked anyone to believe me.  I was simply stating what I know personally on my account and what I have noted.  There are many accounts at TT (I don't know how many accounts there are).  There are probably over 300 MTs working there, and the majority of them don't work on my account -- many of them probably don't even work on ExText.  I never said all the accounts had favorites.  I only know of favorites on ONE of my accounts.  It's not that difficult to find the information.  It just takes a little detective work and the info is there.

I'm certainly not bitter in any way.  I would even like to retire from TT one day.  But, you would think that from the responses above, that I was a miserable employee with no life and nothing better to do than trash my employer.  Of course, there is no perfect place to work.  One person's fit could be another person's nightmare.  TT fits fine in my life right now.  I think trying to get inside someone's head about their motivation is kind of a stretch, though. Since when it is uncommon for someone to criticize their employer at one time or another?  Suggesting they need to get fresh air and a hobby, assuming they are motivated by bitterness, or even that they are lying makes me question THEIR motive and, in fact, maybe they are suit(s) themselves.  Question everything, even the questioner.  Just saying.

Oh, and to GIJane - Yes, of course, I contacted them and asked about it. I even asked if there were some people hired to do only certain jobs.  If they would have been up front with me, I certainly would have no reason to critize them.

What The Q Has Done For (or To) Me (rant)
Feb 06, 2010

I was thinking about this earlier today.  I worked for a lot of years in hospitals doing MT, worked for doctors doing the same (I often had doctors try to steal me away from the hospitals I worked for to go and work for them but I'm loyal to a fault and it sometimes gets me hurt), and when I was just working for a doctor to cover for a transcriptionist on vacation, I was always asked back for the next vacation.  Always had perfection with my reports, never ever had an issue w ...

I work for a small MT company that put me on a small account with 4 doctors, and I was told that I'd be the only MT.  Within a week it was obvious someone else was taking all the work, and I was told that this other MT was only supposed to take jobs "when necessary."  However, she takes all the jobs the second they show up.  Despite watching like a hawk for 10 hours a day, I get maybe 35% of the dictations overall, and the whole time I know that this other MT has OTHER work s ...

DSG Rant. (sm)
Aug 30, 2010

I have tried to give DSG a chance because I really hate changing jobs, but damn... this ASR gets worse every single day. I thought I was developing a rhythm and some speed with it finally and now it can't complete a single solitary sentence in any report I've had in the last three days without a serious error. It doesn't even come CLOSE to typing what the dictator very, VERY clearly says. I don't understand how ASR works, but how can it be getting worse all these months af ...

I think I could really make good money on VR if I was the only one on my account or if it learned specifically to each person editing.  I'm getting so tired of working on reports for a day to finally get them to start coming out needing little editing by the end of the day and then coming back on the next day to find the same reports SO full of errors after different people were on the account for the next shift.  It's great when you have other people who are good at their jo ...

Let me preface by saying that I am not a veteran in this field. I have only been a MT for about a year and a half. I graduated from one of the AHDI accepted schools. In the short time I have been working, I have worked for both of the national MTSOs. In my opinion the grass is brown on either side of the fence. I was originally enamored by the possibility of working from home and setting my own schedule. The later may be true if you have experience and are fortunate enough to hire on with a good ...

Have you ever noticed than when a dictator tries to adopt a "conversational" style of dictating, that it is very hard to try and figure out what's being said?  They start and stop several times so that you can't remember what the original line of dictation was, plus they add "you know" every other sentence.  I DON'T KNOW!!!!!  My account is a verbatim one and so I figure out as near as I can what he's saying and then send it through.  ...
