Worse Dictators - Angie

I'm new to having to work work for a service. Recently the only work availabe has been the absolutely worst dictator I have ever done in my 25 years transcribing for hundreds of different doctors and specialties. With the platforms being used, can you tell if you are getting previous rejected jobs? There is no way to make more than $1. an hour with this guy.

They also have Word programmed to delete one of the spaces between sentences, essentially a keystroke not being paid, as well as all the other keystrokes for lists, spreadsheets, emails, etc. This program also prevents us from being paid for headers by having the subject of each header (HPI, etc), as a separate job, which forces us to have to enter the data on a spreadsheet multiple times for the same office visit. If things don't change I'm certainly not staying with this service! Are you having similar experiences with services?

Just a few of suggestions for those horrible dictators. One, ask for sample reports from all work types, ask them to send you as many as they can and don't take no for an answer. Two, send your questions and blanks to QA and then make sure the corrections get back to you and print. Three, just believe that in time you will actually become able to understand the dictator. Scary, but true. I am assuming it is just the dictator who is bad and not the sound quality. If sound quality is lousy or they are using a cell phone in traffic, you need to talk to supervisor and complain. Time is money.

No QA is available. That is part of the problem as there is zero feedback on blanks.

Reminds me of an account I had 14 years where I could speed through the dictation and only have to research maybe one or two times a day. Then I started a sub who was out of state. My dictators had gotten so spoiled I guess they got really sloppy and the sub couldn't understand a word they said. I need to download a bunch of this guys reports. Just spend soooo much time not making any money it's hard to make myself do more, but you're right.

What service? Are we able to say the names here? This is something we all find out after the fact and you cannot prove it. This is just ONE of the ways "they" make money, and we get 'slavery' wages. You are lucky it is just one dictator. I would get ALL the foreign doctors and funny there were absolutely no English doctors on staff at a huge teaching hospital! I was told "we all get what comes up in a timely manner and we have no control." Yes, but that can mean a LOT of things. Either the inhouse staff sends it out so that they do not have to waste their time because they believe a service can do it, or they are sending all the English-speaking doctors to the foreign countries because they want easier work because they are getting less money, or the VR is rejecting this dictator also because it cannot understand either, or there is cherry picking. Someone has to do the horrible work...but we should be compensated for it. Doctors charge for "difficult" patients and so should we. But, maybe the service does also...but the transcriptionist will not know that!

I have been with the same service for a while but recently picked up a new account and 1 dictator is completely horrible. No bad sound quality, not an ESL, just FLIES through and I am struggling through report after report and I'm not getting any better on it. I have samples to look at but when I can't even pick up a word, I am so lost. I agree it is bad that we don't get compensated for the bad dictation we have to do, but I learned a long time ago that it's not going to change. I don't know what to tell you except hopefully it won't be daily and you'll get some better dictators. hanging in there for now.

I thought this ASR crap was supposed to get better as it "learns" the doctors and their frequently-used phrases... didn't someone say that back in training? I'm talking about DSG in particular, but I know a lot of people use DQS ASR, so please bear with me. So, how come it now can't seem to get a single sentence without major corrections having to be done? I was terminated for reasons I won't go into here--after 9+ years at my last employer. Thing is--I was looking anyway and informed potential employers that the company just was "no longer a good fit." What finally tipped the balance was an e-mail we got a few months ago stating that after an MT had sent a certain percentage of reports to editing for comprehension issues, for instance, they would be penalized 0.03 cpl for doing so! A new ESL dictating a DS. Can't speed him up because he's too "new" (to this country?). He is spelling every other word!!!!!! AND then spells it again - extubated, e-x-t-u-b-a-t-e-d, extubated e for elephant, x for crosses, t for tom, u for umbrella, b for .......... get the picture (sigh)? Has anyone noticed that fairly suddenly ASR recognition has gotten much worse. I know it was pretty bad before, but now I've noticed that even with the clear dictators where in the past the ASR recognition was okay, it's now HORRIBLE. Weren't we promised the ASR would get BETTER with time. Didn't they LOWER our pay when they said it got better before. Does it seem that the ILPs are leaving blanks for anything and everything lately? I mean, most of the stuff is clear as day. Then it goes through 2 ILP QA and they can't get it either, although I have long since realized that the other levels of QA don't even look at the report but just send it on anyway.
