What a concept -- lay-offs due to lack of work - MissAnthrope

Earlier this week, my employer was forced to lay off MTs.  What a concept -- only keeping enough employees for the amount of work coming in.  I have worked for other less considerate employers who don't care whether or not we have to sit and wait and scrape and beg for work, (MQ, FN), and this really blows my mind.  They actually want to take care of us so that we have enough work.  Yes, it is unfortunate for those who were laid off, but only keeping the best of the best was really a sound business decision. 

 

This is a really small company, less than 130 MTs, and now probably less than 100 after this.  What a warm snuggly feeling working for an employer who actually cares about my financial security -- wow...

Those employees are really fortunate to have been working for an honest employer who unfortunately had no choice but to make the decision that was made and faced reality. At least these employees can collect unemployment benefits without worrying about any ramifications from their employer. These smaller companies seem to have more work ethics and compassion for their hard working employees in such bad economic times unlike the deceitful work tactics from the bigger companies. I hope everything works out well in the near future for those that got layoff slips.

...and let me take another guess. Those who were laid off probably don't feel as warm and snuggly as you do right now.

I notice you don't mention how much advance notice the people who were laid off were given, but let me take a third guess...none or next to none.

laid off can go ahead and collect unemployment with no problem instead of staying with the company, begging for work, not getting it, not getting unemployment. I totally get what MissAnthrope is saying.

The company DOES care by laying off and only keeping enough MTs to do the work they have instead of overhiring and/or just stringing people along all the way to the poor house waiting for them to finally QUIT so the company may not have to pay unemployment.

How sad have we gotten that we're grateful when an - MTSO actually lays us off. Pathetic. nm

I'm about to start at one where I've only now been told there's "not a lot of work," and it sure would be interesting to know the answer.

This company was heart-broken about having to let any of its MTs go, truly. There is absolutely no way we are currently hiring at this company, which is to remain nameless.

Also, regarding the post above, it is not that I am grateful that any company lays anyone off. It is just a sign of the times all across America. My point was they were making sure that I had enough work instead of stringing me along, working for scraps. I feel blessed to have such an organization as my employer, for now, of course, until the other shoe drops. At that time, I will take my nearly 30 years of experience and find another employer who is worthy of my expertise.

Really discouraged.  Just laid off from job of 7-1/2 years with a voicemail.  Nice.  Have taken several tests, the last of which said I wasn't skilled enough for them (after 26 years?).  Got a job but terrible hours and not good reviews on company.  To be truthful, I'm not even sure I want to do this anymore.  We certainly don't make the money we used to so why I am working 7p.m. to 3 a.m. after all this time?   ...

As an MT who has recently had a pay cut (or "new pay structure") and has consequently upped my game in terms of trying to get more lph, now I find there just seems to be not enough work to even get the 8 hours a day in.
