Looking for advice on completion of schooling or lack there of... - Jelly

Posted: Nov 08, 2010

Here is the situation.  I am currently going through an MT course, I am in the Beginning MT practicum and then I have Intermediate MT practicum to complete.  When I originally signed up for the course, I signed up for the "complete course" (Intermediate was the final module) in order to receive my certification of completion.  I have recently found out, quite by accident, that my school has now added 2 additional modules to complete the course for an additional charge of $1900.00, a figure that is not within my budget right now.  Even though I signed up before these were added to the curriculum, I am now being told that I will not receive my certificate of completion unless I add and complete these 2 modules, however, I can receive a transcript that will show what modules I completed and what grades I received.  My question is this, will I be able to get a job or even apply for a job with only a transcript?

I really doubt that you will have enough experience under your belt at this stage. I know that my company requires five years of recent acute care experience before we will even grant an interview. What school are you attending? Does it use SUM? (That is always key to me.) Is there anyway you can get a student loan or someone to help you financially so that you can finish the course? I wish you the best of luck.

I plan on completing the course that I signed up for which was the complete program up until about 2 months ago. So anyone who completed the program prior to the addition of the 2 modules received certification of completion. So I think by completing what I originally signed up for, I will have as much schooling and experience as anyone else who "graduated" from this particular school in the recent past. I just don't know if anyone will even look at me.

I am using the SUM program and I have to say, I do think I'm doing a pretty good job for a beginner, typically I score in about the mid 90s, I know I need to be at 97 or above but I can only go up, right? :)

If you are using the SUM program, you are definitely on the right track. Don't give up on yourself. If you really, really want to become an MT, you will. Again, I wish you the best of luck.

Is It Possible To Pass The CCS Exam Upon Completion Of The Andrews Coding Course?
Nov 21, 2013

From what I've read, the CCS exam sounds difficult and I'm curious if any Andrews grads passed the exam as soon as they were finished with the course. I guess really what I'm wondering is if the Andrews course prepares you enough to pass the CCS or is the course more geared toward the CPC. I'm in the research phase right now, deciding which coding course is the best one for me. I'm also still trying to understand the differences between all of the coding credentials, bu ...

Question About Schooling
Dec 28, 2011

I am an RN but haven't worked as an RN for 20 years, have attended job fairs and pretty much have been told there are no jobs, nothing I can do after being out of the field this long (even taking the refresher courses). I left the field to be an MT,  as I could do it from home and still have some supervision of my children (I am CMT and have been an MT for 20 years). With the continued loss of income, I am seriously considering coding.  I have 2 questions for everyone, I know I wi ...

Is All Of This Schooling Worth It Or Not???
Dec 28, 2011

I am just wondering if this schooling has all been worth it.  I am not seeing alot of happy people on this site.  I have been a graduate of medical in 1986 and since gone on to manicuring for the sake of flexible schedule while my child was in latter years of school. I pursued a course with Mt Professionals to be able to catch up and with skills and am still in my third year of school on part-time basis waiting to pass to become a paid employee with one error.  I am getting really ...

Schooling Questions
Feb 09, 2015

I am considering the Medical Billing/Coding program at Career Step.  I know someone who works there and they can get me almost half off tuition.  I want to know what any of you think about Career Step? I went to Andrews for MT school and I think it was great, I just don't know if I want to go that route for coding, the Career Step program is for combined billing/coding. ...

Can I Work As A MT If I Do Not Finish My Schooling?
Aug 01, 2014

Just wondering, does anyone know if I can work as a MT if I do not complete my schooling? I have about a month and a half of MT schooling left and I was wondering if I can do MT work? Iam at the point where I do not know if this is the right thing for me or not. Maybe if I can do some actual work it would help me decide to complete my schooling or try something else. Anyone else in my boat? Thanks!!! ...

CCS Exam - I Have Finished Schooling For The ICD9
Mar 18, 2014

I have finished schooling for the ICD9, and am getting ready to start an adjunct ICD10 class.  The AHIMA is changing the test to ICD10 at the end of April.  I wonder if there will be any ICD9 on there at all.  Also, for the coders out there that have trained with the ICD10, do you find it will be a better system than ICD9?  I am excited to learn it.    Thank you, PJ ...

Lack Of Work
Jul 06, 2012

Has anyone noticed less work in your queues lately? Has anyone had a hard time getting in to a new transcription company? I have 12 years experience, and had an easier time finding a job as a newbie than I do now. Think maybe this has anything to do with the cheap labor from India that is replacing American workers? I'm thinking about finishing my coding classes, but they give American jobs to India also. What does it take to earn a living in America now? ...

VR Quality....or Lack Thereof (sm)
Dec 17, 2009

I have no problem with new technology.  I am often the first to buy a new electronic device or gadget. I was the first person in my little circle to get an iPhone, Slingbox, Wii and even a Magic Jack.  I bought all these devices with the knowledge that there would be bugs, installation problems and usage nuances, not to mention a learning curve of some sort on my part.  The transcription industry across the board has rushed to embrace VR technology with what seems like very little ...

Low Work And Lack Of Communication From Above
May 13, 2011

As an MT who has recently had a pay cut (or "new pay structure") and has consequently upped my game in terms of trying to get more lph, now I find there just seems to be not enough work to even get the 8 hours a day in. As per usual, when this happens I check on here and many other MTs have the same situation, are even more bitter when they see their company is hiring, etc. I am just wondering why we never seem to be offered any explanation from the higherups, or even a guess as to why this is. ...

FutureNet Job Ad & Lack Of Work
Sep 21, 2011

I just don't get FN's logic.  The latest ad is looking for VR editors from Friday through Monday afternoon and night shift.  The work statistics show minimal to NO work on all accounts over the weekend.  The weekends are the slowest times for all work.  Everyone must work a shift on a weekend day.  Most weekends, you would be lucky to get enough work to finish your shift.  Yes, they send e-mails begging for help when there are 5 reports to be done in an a ...

Lack Of Important Communication
Oct 22, 2013

There really needs to be a change in the level of meaningful communication.  A couple of weeks ago all of a sudden, there were no status updates.  It went from 2 a day even on the weekends to nothing for a week.  When I finally got one, the supervisor explained they were trying to determine how the work flowed without the status updates.  If I was a supervisor, that would scare me because it sounds like they are looking at ways of having less management personnel.  But, ...

What A Concept -- Lay-offs Due To Lack Of Work
Feb 12, 2010

Earlier this week, my employer was forced to lay off MTs.  What a concept -- only keeping enough employees for the amount of work coming in.  I have worked for other less considerate employers who don't care whether or not we have to sit and wait and scrape and beg for work, (MQ, FN), and this really blows my mind.  They actually want to take care of us so that we have enough work.  Yes, it is unfortunate for those who were laid off, but only keeping the best of the best ...
