QA hourly or not 100 percent review? - Exhausted

Posted: Nov 15, 2010

Anyone know who hires QA hourly or is not 100 percent review? If so, what is the hourly rate? Company info such as ins would be greatly appreciated! I have 5 1/2 years exp in QA if that makes a difference. Thanks so much!

moderator comes along and deletes my post. I have no idea why as this is the company board.

I have 11 years of QA experience and am tired of doing full reviews for a few cents a line, so I know where you're coming from! Hope your post is allowed to stay & get answered.

I refuse to take 3 to 4 cpl to perform QA. I have 20+ years in MT with about 10 doing QA and it's ridiculous. QA people should be paid more than an MT simply because by definition QA has a broader knowledge thereby possessing the skills to correct or assist the average MT.

I'm back to MTing now and I am marginally happy with my job. I miss QA, but I refuse to compromise.

You are making a very broad and false generalization, since many MTs also have decades of varied experience (many far exceeding 20 years). Some have tried QA, simply disliked the job, and preferred MT. Personally, could not care less what QAs are paid, but to claim they deserve higher pay than MT because they have "broader knowledge" is a generalization and an incorrect one.
I Agree - MT

I did QA for 5 years and went back to MT. Didn't like being QA. I know in my own head that I qualify for it, so I wasn't ashamed to be "just an MT" again.

I do agree that to qualify for QA, you have to be a darn good MT and that not all MTs are that good. (Trust me, I've seen a lot of things in my years as QA, and there were very few really, really good MTs.) However, to generalize that QA is "better" than an MT is not a fair statement.
I'm sorry, but if a person is qualified enough to pass a QA - NKC

test and be offered the job, they deserve to make more money than the MT. The QA's job is to proofread and correct, educate, and research new terms. QA should have and usually do have a broader knowledge base than the average MT. If that were not the case, than any MT, from newbie to veteran, would be considered equally qualified to do QA.

When the dictation is too difficult for the average MT to understand, the dictation is sent on to, what should be, a more qualified ear in QA. If a dictator uses a term or instrument or drug that the average MT is not familiar with, the dictation is sent on to, what should be, a more knowledgeable, more experienced person.

For that reason alone, QA deserves higher compensation than the MT and deserves to make an hourly wage. Productivity should not be a criteria by which a QA person is measured. QA should be about quality only and nothing else.

I realize that there are some who managed to get jobs as QA that are not more experienced than some of the MTs they check, but that should be the exception to the rule.

Personally, I have worked far too hard for far too long to be insulted in 3 or 4 cpl doing a thankless job where so many MTs take their QA personally or who use QA as their safety net.
What if the QA puts in wrong word in the blank? - lka
[ In Reply To ..]
I asked this on another thread but never received an answer. The other day I sent a report to QA with 2 blanks, same word... a surgical word that I could not verify. I did an exhaustive search to no avail. Then the QA person put in the word that I thought it was, YES, it was clear as a bell, but how do I know that is correct? I asked the QA to let me know where they found that as I take my work seriously and want to know for future reference. I never got an answer... I think she did NOT research and just put in what I heard also. Is that right do you think? I consider myself a very good MT with over 25 years of experience in all fields and love what I do, even though the pay is low. However, if I could get a job as a QA at a decent hourly rate, I would rather have that than this the piddly wages I am now making at 3.5 cpl. Any thoughts appreciated on what I am asking.

auditing practices as MTs. Those in charge of the QA department should be performing random audits on their people. It's a tedious job and supervisors generally don't like to have to do it, but QA should be able to hold that same mirror up to their own work.

Problem is a lot of companies look at QA as the last stop for a report before it goes back home and companies have been known to hire QA people who truly don't possess the experience and knowledge that they should, especially now when companies are only paying 3 or 4 cpl. You get what you pay for, you know?

I'm not saying QA doesn't make mistakes. They do all the time. The best QA person will own their mistakes and even thank the MT for pointing them out. I was never so arrogant to think that I knew it all.

As far as your example of the clear as a bell blank that the QA filled in and never provided her source, sometimes the QAs source is her own head. I can honestly say after doing this for 20 or so years, that sometimes without even listening to a dictation, I can fill in the blank because I just know what the doctor is saying because I've heard it so many times before.

A QAs job is to be able to fill in those blanks without having to do much research that's why they were hired to do QA or that should be the case anyway.

Basically all I'm trying to say is that a QA person SHOULD be paid more because by the job description they are supposed to have more knowledge than the average bear. I do concede that this is not always the case which is why there has been this move towards paying lower per line rates to QA people. It is a viscious circle created by the MTSOs. They don't want to pay the hourly wages to a good QA person, so they pay 3 or 4 cpl to someone who isn't really qualified to be a QA, but will take the low wage simply for the power and bragging rights.

This is why I'm an MT again and happily so.

MD-IT just hired QA on an hourly basis at $15/hr. When you think about this supposedly being a "higher tier" position, $15/hr isn't much but sure beats a low cpl especially when there isn't enough work to go around. Wishing you good luck in your search.
QAs do get randomly audited & graded more harshly. - than MTs.
