BOS rule for drug names in all caps? - unsure

Posted: Mar 28, 2013

Does anyone know the BOS rule for drug names that are technically all caps, i.e., TUMS, GRALISE?  Do they stay all caps or is it okay to capitalize just the first letter, or is it company/client preference?  QA is telling me just to capitalize the first letter so as not to draw more attention than needed to the drug name in the report, but I can't document this in the Book of Style.  Thanks in advance!

You do what QA tells you to - they audit you

The client could want it that way, whether its in BOS of not. You do what QA tells you to.

Thank you but that didn't really answer it for me - unsure

I wanted to know more for personal benefit. I've seen it done different ways and was wondering if there was an AHDI rule for it somewhere, for whatever that is worth these days, and which after 25 minutes of searching I have managed to find.

AHDI may think they can make - rules

but until they start signing my paycheck, what they say means nothing to me. What counts is what my employer wants. The person who signs my paycheck makes the rules I follow.

Answer - BOS is just guidelines

A lot of times, those all caps are just for logo/advertising purposes. BOS used to say not to do that, but they don't seem to reference that anymore, probably because it depends on the client. If the client doesn't have a preference, then do what QA says, but document what they told you.

capitalization and drug names per BOS III - research

page 158:

Many band names use idiosyncratic, or mixed, capitalization in their names. Defer to facility preference for the retention of idiosyncratic capitalizations, as both are generally acceptable.

example:
pHisoHex or Phisohex
NyQuil or Nyquil

EXCEPTION:
Chemotherapy protocols and investigational agents that use idiosyncratic capitalization should be transcribed that way. In many instances the capitalized portions of those terms represent acronyms that identify specific protocol components.

example:
CyHOP
COBARTin

There are also rules for generics, illegal/illicit drug names, medicinal herb names etc., but that is too much to include here. The moral of the story here is to follow your QA's advice.

Am I overly concerned or do you think I may have a point?  I think the Word Help Board is invaluable and have always helped whenever I 100% knew the correct spelling.  But as I have been reading the questions, there seem to be more and more drug questions from drug lists, which means no point of reference.  There are also a few “allergic to: sounds like” questions.  When I first started working as a Medical Transcriptionist, QA was always:  “Leave a b ...
