VR pay rate? - Anonymous

Just wondering what to expect. My company is moving some docs to VR and I have heard that the pay will be a straight line rate. I worked very briefly for a company who paid one rate for reading the report and another rate when corrections had to be made. Just hoping to get some input on how many people out there are paid just a flat rate. Can you make any money doing this or do you find you have to work longer hours for less money? Is there anyone out there who is happy with VR editing?

I get 4 cents per line plus shift differential for working evenings, so I get 4.75 cents per line. I love ASR. I find that I'm getting a faster already after a week. I think you will make more money with transcription, but I'm sick of typing all night and struggling to understand the hideous speed-talker-mumblers. ASR is non-stressful, pleasant, and interesting. Each person will have a different opinion, however. But I really am happy to do ASR, and the pay is acceptable to me now that I'm getting faster. I also find the trade-off of slightly less money for non-stressful work perfectly acceptable.

You still have to be on the ball... What about all the sound alikes that ASR throws in (fasicular/vesicular or perineal/peroneal). I think it is more stressful constantly searching for meaning and the words blur together, its a mess! Way more stressful for me.

In such cases, you should be able to tell by the context of the report and whats going on with the patient which word is correct versus incorrect. Thats where your transcription experience kicks in.

But I do have to struggle probably 1-2 days a week to stay focused. I think after 20 years being an MT can be mind numbing, like playing Monopoly. It can be fun, but generally it's just meh. With ASR it's like playing Monopoly where someone rolls the die and moves for you, making the decisions on which properties to buy and then you can sometimes change the decision. I think if you are in the mode where things start to blur or you miss words, that's when you are screwed.

Personally I'm fine with the pay, but I also am not a sole support for the family. I think if you really researched it people should be paid 60-75% of their line rates because you can't exactly "flow" the same with ASR as typing and you must fix things that the computer puts in that if you were typing you'd never in a million years hear wrong. Like with QAing (been there tooo) you HAVE to pay 10x more attention because your mind once it sees it in print, assumes it's correct.

Once you adjust to using all the shortcuts it really is not that bad. There are a lot of people out there who dont mind ASR, the biggest complaint is pay for most.

It has been better on my wrist since I dont type as much, but I still wear my ace wraps regardless.

I recently read a job posting that required 150 lph for straight type and 225 for VR - Does this make sense ? These companies are using the excuse that we should be able to produce "twice as many lines" with VR - thus - HALF the pay. On a report to us today that someone had a 700+ LPH rate. When I questioned it, I was told that they didn't know how that could be either, it was on the management report they got. If QC is over 10%, then the pay is 7/3.5 pennies a line. If it's that amount and the speed is just about 100 lines or a little over that an hour, I think that would amount to below minimum wage, wouldn't it? So I think the 7/3.5 pennies a line pay rate automatically is equivalent to MUP--unless the MT is very speedy. 7/3.5 pennies a line pay rate is pretty ridiculous. During this transition time I was trying to decide between IC status and employee status. I was doing this because I thought that being an IC would save my 1/2 cpl decrease that you get with employee status. However, in my packet, my rate is now 9 cpl, down the 1/2 cpl as mentioned, but the choices were still FT, PT or IC.
