IC Pay Rate - IC Curious

Posted: Sep 20, 2011

I am thinking of taking an IC position.  Can anyone tell me the going rate of how much to charge a company?  Thanks!

I am an IC - IC

and make 14 cpl. Make sure you take into consideration, as an IC you have no benefits and you must provide everything, including computer issues, you need to pay for IT, even when you use the IT for the doctor you type for, they make you pay the bill. You get no pay for time off, etc. Take all this into consideration when you decide on your rate. Good luck

What is IT? Are you happy with being an IC or prefer to be an employee?

IT -- tech folks that take care of your software issues-- I am an employeed MT for BIG MTSO, seems to me no good pay as employee or as IC -- I am thinking of going IC though to get away from all the BS from the Company -- plus LOUSY insurance I pay for and can't get out of for a few more months. But all Ins is too costly -- another story

IT is computer repairs, etc., which is where all of my money has been going, more than I make, along with huge healthcare premiums and out-of-pocket expenses. I would rather be an employee if possible, although I do have control over sound.

I would prefer to get appropriately paid for my skills and to be appreciated - IC

Even as an IC, I am treated just like an employee. I can not even submit my own invoice. I have to use their format and they insist that I put their name at the top! I am the business, my name should be at the top. They did not understand when I told them that I wanted to use my format not theirs. I explained to them that if I go into a store, I can not demand that my name be at the top of the reciept, that the store name goes there. I had to conform to their format or not get paid.

IT - the people who support your computer for technical stuff. I am lucky, by boys, 21 and 18 still live at home and they take care of all my computer needs. One is in college working on a computer science major and the other was going that route, but has changed his mind and is going in the direction of psychology, but still knows a lot about computers. What one does not know, the other does. But if you do not have help like that, it can be rather costly.

I had health insurance through my husband, so that was not much of an expense either, but he lost his job in June and now we have none. So right now, I am not sure whether I would like to be an employee or IC, just know I would like to sleep a little more frequent than every other day and maybe actually have a day off and not because I am too sick to get out of bed, but a real day off!

I work seven days a week as IC and never get a day off (unless of course I am too sick to get out of bed). My last day off was 2 1/2 years ago when I had the flu, a sinus infection, bilateral ear infections, vomiting and diarrhea all at once. The only way I got out of bed was to crawl to the bathroom in my bedroom and was in bed for a week. When I come back after that week, I get all the work that no one did while I was sick and all the new stuff all at once, fun days.

The best advise I can give to you is if you go IC, make sure you write up a contract with your best interests in mind. Good luck

Thanks everyone for your input.

I am working for a company now as an employee, got put on editing (which I don't mind doing), but I am not getting paid for spaces which has drastically cut into my paycheck. I am looking for a job elsewhere. I never thought to consider an IC position until now. I have checked out insurance premiums for me and am prepared for the cost of that. Just hope I hear from a company soon. I would rather get paid for something that is typed and required in the english language versus not. I find it utterly ridiculous!

Pay Rate-HELP!!
Jun 13, 2010

I've been out of the industry and on unemployment for over a year, and have just been contacted by a previous employer to work for them again.  The catch?  I was very well paid by this company and I will be discussing my rate of pay tomorrow with the payroll manager.  I am gunshy about asking for too much money because I now know what slim pickings it is out there.  Should I just jump in and ask for the same rate as before?  I was paid by the page, does anyone ...

Pay Rate - Rad MT
Jul 11, 2011

What a shock to wake up this morning and realize the almighty "Q" has just sent me hurling into bancruptcy!  My husband lost his $75,000/year job 3 months ago and just found another but only making $8.50/hour.  As we don't live beyond our means, we thought that would at least let us catch up on the major bills.  But now I'm going from $1.65 a report to $1.20 a report.  That's a MAJOR cut in pay ($1,000 to $3,000 PER MONTH).  This is devastating and I feel ...

VR Pay Rate
Oct 11, 2011

I recently read a job posting that required 150 lph for straight type and 225 for VR - Does this make sense ?  These companies are using the excuse that we should be able to produce "twice as many lines" with VR - thus - HALF the pay.  If that is truly the case, then why in the world would the line requirement not reflect that as well.  Obviously, these companies know VR is not nearly as productive for the MT as they claim; however, I would venture to guess with the MT making hal ...

Going Rate For IC?
Jan 05, 2012

After nearly a decade of working with Webmedx, I like many others am looking for extra work to supplement what I will be losing with Nuance.  I have a chance to pick up some part-time IC work, but I have no idea what a good acute care IC rate is.  Ten years ago, I charged $0.12/line.  Is this still an okay rate?  More?  Less?  I don't want to ask for too much and have them laugh at me, but I also don't want to sell myself short. Thanks for any advice! ...

Rate Of Pay
Jan 08, 2012

Wow, I'm an independent contractor and was looking at the job seekers board to maybe take on another part time job.  The rate of pay is still 7 to 8 cents per line??  This seems a bit ridiciulous.  I mean 10 years ago when I started with an online company, this is the rate of pay they started you out at!  I work for local doctors and charge starting out no less than 11 cents per line, especially as an independent contractor where you get no benefits or paid time off. &nb ...

VR Pay Rate?
Apr 11, 2012

Just wondering what to expect.  My company is moving some docs to VR and I have heard that the pay will be a straight line rate.  I worked very briefly for a company who paid one rate for reading the report and another rate when corrections had to be made.  Just hoping to get some input on how many people out there are paid just a flat rate.  Can you make any money doing this or do you find you have to work longer hours for less money?  Is there anyone out there who is h ...

How About A 700+ LPH Rate?
Jul 31, 2013

On a report to us today that someone had a 700+ LPH rate.  When I questioned it, I was told that they didn't know how that could be either, it was on the management report they got. THAT is the very reason why I don't trust these reports they shove at us, I won't even look at them anymore.  I'm glad I'm done with this place in just a few more days. As I've said so many times before....this company was NEVER a transcription company.  They are a SOFTW ...

Pay Rate
May 09, 2015

If QC is over 10%, then the pay is 7/3.5 pennies a line. If it's that amount and the speed is just about 100 lines or a little over that an hour, I think that would amount to below minimum wage, wouldn't it? So I think the 7/3.5 pennies a line pay rate automatically is equivalent to MUP--unless the MT is very speedy. 7/3.5 pennies a line pay rate is pretty ridiculous. However, I don't understand a couple of commenters here who have complained about the pay scale overall being ...

Rate Decrease
Nov 24, 2009

During this transition time I was trying to decide between IC status and employee status.  I was doing this because I thought that being an IC would save my 1/2 cpl decrease that you get with employee status.  However, in my packet, my rate is now 9 cpl, down the 1/2 cpl as mentioned, but the choices were still FT, PT or IC.  That makes me wonder if we all got cut down to 9 cpl and even if I would have decided to go with IC status, my rate would still have been cut.  Did any ...

PT Line Rate Cut
Nov 25, 2009

I  know a lot of us wonder what the reason is for PT status MTs to lose 1/2 cpl.  We have been told that it is because at some point we could possibly switch to FT.  If our bank, where we have our checking and savings accounts would send us a letter telling us that starting next month we would have to start paying $200 per month for our house payment, even though we do not own a house, but this was just in case some day we might, I think we would all tell that bank they were nuts ...
