Pay Rate - Meh
Posted: May 09, 2015
If QC is over 10%, then the pay is 7/3.5 pennies a line. If it's that amount and the speed is just about 100 lines or a little over that an hour, I think that would amount to below minimum wage, wouldn't it? So I think the 7/3.5 pennies a line pay rate automatically is equivalent to MUP--unless the MT is very speedy. 7/3.5 pennies a line pay rate is pretty ridiculous. However, I don't understand a couple of commenters here who have complained about the pay scale overall being less than it was before in that they trick you into thinking it's more but it's actually less because the pay amount is cut in half. I don't understand because it seems the half pay has ALWAYS been that way. That is, for SR editing, it's always been half the amount of pay. Overall, I get paid more because more often than not, my QC is less than 10% and my quality is always high. I was only making 7.50/3.75 before. Seems like most other MTs must have been making more than what I was making before if they're saying they're making less.
Wow if you were making only 3.75 for editing - before.....I can only hope

that you were brand new. I haven't gotten paid 7.5 cents a line since I first started 15 years ago.
No wonder you are okay with the crap pay.
Brand New - Meh

Yes, brand new. I was disabled before. Just graduated from MTEC. Basically homebound. Decided on MT from viewing http://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/medical-transcriptionists.htm. They should take down that page because it's inaccurate. Anyway, I thought it's the norm to make like 8/4 pennies a line, which isn't much more than 7.50/3.75 line. How much were you making before? Anyway, I'm okay but not pleased with the crap pay because I've got other dreams besides this slave job. This slave job just helps me build my self-discipline work ethic, which I didn't get instilled in me when I was young.
That makes sense then. But now you can - understand why most of
[ In Reply To ..]
the MTs with YEARS of experience are upset, right? Most of us started making at least 7 or 8 cpl, worked our way up with experience to maybe 9 or 10 cpl (or more) and now companies are refusing to pay for experience, which STINKS.
It does make sense for you, being homebound, and new, etc. But you were saying you didn't understand why some of us were upset.. but hopefully now you do. Good luck in whatever you do. :)

[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't say I didn't understand why some were upset with MT pay in general. I said I didn't understand why some are saying they're making less money now at Nuance than they were making before at Nuance before Nuance's new pay game. All the dislikes on my post has nothing to do with my comment but says more about the person who clicks the dislike. They are projecting their own issues onto my comment in terms of what I didn't even say. Anyway, thanks for wishing me luck.
How Many Pennies - Meh
[ In Reply To ..]
So I've been wondering what were most people mnaking at Nuance before this new compensatoin plan? Everybody complaining about pay and MUP and sounds like many making minimum wage. I'm surprised that 7.50/3.75 is a lot lower pay than most Nuance employees, according to your comment. Or else you are just being snide, as many people on this forum seem to be.

Your comment kind of irked me. Also, the fact that I get a dislike on my comment whereas you get 2 likes on your comment irks me. Maybe you need a remedial reading class. If you read my post again, you won't find anywhere that I said I was content or even okay with the pay. That's your interpretation because people on this forum love to complain and be negative. If you read my post again and are a good reader meaning good comprehension, you will see that I said that I don't know how much other MTs were making but they must have been making more than I was at 7.50/3.75 if they are complaining about the new pay game, since I happen to make more now because I usually have less than 10% QC. I DID NOT say that I was happy with the new pay game rate either, only that I'm making more than I was. If you comprehend my post, I was essentially wanting to know how much other MTs were making, since I didn't comprehend how others could be making less now with the new pay game. I DID NOT say I was happy with the pay before or now, but people on this forum love to deride others. It seems there are many people on this forum who twist meaning and need to go back to school to learn to read with adequate comprehension.
Example Response - Meh
[ In Reply To ..]
A good example response to my original post, one without derision and showing proper understandfing of what I wrote would be something as follows: I made MUCH MORE than 7.50/3.75 before (if you don't want to state the exact amount your made), so that's why I make less now with the new pay game. Yes, I think the 7/3.5 pennies pay rate for QC over 10% is ridiculous too.
Translation - Meh
[ In Reply To ..]
It irritates me that people put words into my mouth, so I will translate what I said in my original post once and for all:
1. If QC being over 10% means getting paid 7/3.5 pennies a line, that rate would mean MUP unless one is very speedy and productive, wouldn't it?
2. I don't understand why many fellow Nuance MTs are saying they get paid less now than they did before at Nuance. Could this mean that most others MTs at Nuance were making a lot more flat rate before than I was making at 7.5/3.75 pennies a line? With the new pay game, I almost always make more than 7.5/3.75 pennies a line now (unless my QC is over 10%, which doesn't happen usually). I make more now than I used to before Nuance changed to their new pay game, but that's just me. Can somebody explain why they make less now?
Okay, I don't think I can make it clearer or more simpler than this.

Nobody is trying to put words in your mouth. Nobody really cares THAT much.
It seems like you just want to find out why people are making less than before. There are too many reasons. If you are new AND started at only 7.5 cpl, you won't feel like it is much different as far as pay. The ones who lost pay are the ones who have been here longer, working their way up the payscale only to be shot down with continuous pay cuts. Also, some platforms are being paid LESS for no apparent reason. Not sure what else you want to hear.

Not fair to take out negativity on someone who makes a neutral comment, which originally was what my posting was. I wasn't having a bad day. I just thought it was unfair. Nobody was TRYING to put words in my mouth, but was nonetheless. I think you finally get my drift, though, what my posting meant and finally answered it. No need to gripe about frustrations to me and make it sound like I said something wrong, though.

Some platforms do pay less, reason unsure, but maybe Nuance thinks they are easier. I started 4 years ago and I never "worked my way up" any pay scale. There was only one pay scale on Editscript, my platform, 4+ cpl for VR, 8+ for straight, of which there is very little. There was nowhere to go unless I got sloppy and typed a million lines. I personally now make MORE, not less under new pay plan. Have had a couple bad weeks, but overall making much more, as are at least 2 others I know from my old hospital.
You asked a simple question and get bombarded with ugliness. Go figure.
Thanks... - Meh

...for understanding what I mean. Yes, I'm sure there are probably just as many who are making more with the new pay plan as there are making less. But only the ones who are making less are complaining about the new pay plan and posting about it. I'm not complaining about the new pay plan myself because I'm making more, but complaining in general about MT pay makes perfect sense. The people who clicked on dislike on my post need to separate their personal gripe from what I posted, for my comment had nothing to do with what their complaint is, which is that they're paid crap.

Yes, because experienced MTs made over $16/hr - and higher
[ In Reply To ..]
We were appreciated and paid for our skills. It is extremely difficult for us to think in terms of being paid mere pennies, even after so long a time. Our pay has been continually reduced for years, and new MTs not only don't realize this, they think this pay is good or okay at least. Believe us, its not. Its crap pay for a still necessary skill.
Until VR can completely create all medical records without our help, we deserve to be compensated for our skills and experience.

First, lousy platform, so originally we were paid slightly more. Then the playing field got deciminated. 20% pay cut.
Second, as a very high producer, I made incentive at the rate of $175 to $200 per week. NO MORE INCENTIVE.
Third, as my best account left, my lines have dropped 1000 to 2000 per week, another pay cut.
Fourth, as I got a new platform for 1 account, said platform the worst ever I've worked on in 10 years, I cannot get more than 100/200 lph (remember that lines are halved) on this platform no matter what. Whomever designed that platform should be fired and drummed completely out of the software writing business. Worst platform ever used. Added dozens of keystrokes to get done that which I used to do in 2 keystrokes.
Finally, although this is across the board, the dictation is getting so much worse, dictate, erase, change this, go back to where I said this and change it to that, oh heck, now that I think about it, just erase the whole thing and start over (seriously did happen).
And that accounts for my $800 per month pay cut.
Soon, I can find a job in town that pays what N is paying. Then I'm gone.
Before the new pay grid... - ds
[ In Reply To ..]
I was making 8/4.5 cents per line; however, there was also a weekly incentive along with a quarterly bonus, and my pay was not docked for a minor mistake or sending more than 10% to QC. I could easily calculate my pay and estimate what each paycheck would be. I knew if I had a certain level of production and quality, I would make the incentive for the week/quarter. Now, I have no idea until the final timesheet approval day how much my check will be. Within a day, pay can swing widely due to getting dinged with an error or sending more than 10% to QC. I am making far less than I was previously, anywhere from 50-150 a week less than with the previous compensation plan, and the old way was less than when I started in this field 8 years ago, when I was making 10 to 12 cents a line straight typing. I have not been in this field nearly as long as some other MT's, and I have seen my pay cut nearly in half, then in half again after the lovely new penalizing grid system. Am I looking for a job outside of MT? You bet I am!
I think it is the stress level associated with the new plan--sm - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I did make more before. The pay plan has the possibility to be better for me as I was part time so there never was a production incentive. However, the stress level has gone through the roof because my line rate can now change for really stupid things, like once I typed the name of an anoscope, I left out the hyphen between the 2 names, pay went down. Once lisinopril was capitalized, pay went down. These are stupid, stupid, ridiculous things. Also, things like was/were, ridiculous for pay to be docked for it. I have had a PAP for having quality below 99%. It does not matter that if there is a bad week (really just a bad report), that happens to get audited and your score is low for one week, if you took a 4, 6, or 8 week score and found it to be 99.5%, that one bad week leads to management. It is harder for many of us to swallow because there was a time when many of us made much more than 8/4 we were at before the change.
I think the anger is the sum of multiple things, the pay, the stress, etc.
While I scratch my head about the line thing--sm - anon

as it does seem odd that it is bandied about time and again, when before we were being paid basically half the price of a typed line, I am still irritated about the fact that somebody once upon a time determined that VR would double production. Straight typing was very easy for me, there is absolutely no way that I get twice as much work done with VR.

In part because N lost a very big and very great account. In part because our platform sucks big time on speech wreck (we edit about 50% to 75% of the text), and in part because I flip between 5 accounts to get enough work.
Leveling the playing field. The other word for what they are doing is called decimating it.
In the past 2 years I have taken about a 40% pay cut, and right now, I can just about go work anywhere in town and make what I make at N, which means they are paying unskilled wages for a skilled job.
They obviously do not care about quality. They will have constant turnover to the point that all they will have is newbies.

I was making 9 cpl with another company..straight typing...no incentives or differentials whatsoever, but that is because I negotiated a higher pay to begin with and negotiated a promise for a raise in a few months if I did well, which I did. Currently am making more if Fiesa score and all else is good. However, one slipup and down to 7 or 8 cpl (I started at 8 cpl with the other major player more than 10 years ago. Unpredictable.
