If you are an IC, what is the going rate to charge? I am at the beginning of researching to do get my own clients again but am out of the loop of what to charge. This would be only as myself and not a big company. Thanks.

....I've been out of the loop too long and have no idea what high and low is anymore. I have been working FOR companies and not my own. I used to have my own but a very long time ago. Where do I start?

I work as an IC for 2 MTSO's; one I get 0.95/line the other .10/line and havn't received a raise for a while. I would say you should charge a little more than that, maybe .13/line, because if the client was paying an MTSO, they would be paying more than that so the MTSO could get their cut. Not sure how much above the transcriptionist's pay an MTSO charges the client, but I would guess they are getting at least .02/line. This is just an assumption though, so...

Thank you for that feedback as it gives me a ballpark. You are getting good line rates! I've been getting 8 cents a line or less forever it seems and I've been doing this for 26+ years! What specialty are you in? I think psych (which is my specialty) pays less unfortunately but I like the field.

You are actually pretty close. There are some differences region to region, but anyone reading your note has a very, very good place to start. I had seen figures I was not supposed to see a while ago outling the above. Some MTSOs were charging as high as 16/17-cents a line, paying their MTs and MLSs people (some cases, not all) as little as 5/6-cents a line. Obviously, I was not working for them. The average line rate for MTSO was about 3 to 4 cents over the average MLS' rate....again emphasis on average. Thanks for the input. More information, not less, benefits all of us reading this. I thought MLS stood for Medical Language Specialist and was interchangeable with MT.

Not a big deal. Some people use MLS, some MT. Since I have no way of knowing the preference of the people involved, used both....God! Not hard to figure out.

I recently read a job posting that required 150 lph for straight type and 225 for VR - Does this make sense ? These companies are using the excuse that we should be able to produce "twice as many lines" with VR - thus - HALF the pay. On a report to us today that someone had a 700+ LPH rate. When I questioned it, I was told that they didn't know how that could be either, it was on the management report they got. If QC is over 10%, then the pay is 7/3.5 pennies a line. If it's that amount and the speed is just about 100 lines or a little over that an hour, I think that would amount to below minimum wage, wouldn't it? So I think the 7/3.5 pennies a line pay rate automatically is equivalent to MUP--unless the MT is very speedy. 7/3.5 pennies a line pay rate is pretty ridiculous. During this transition time I was trying to decide between IC status and employee status. I was doing this because I thought that being an IC would save my 1/2 cpl decrease that you get with employee status. However, in my packet, my rate is now 9 cpl, down the 1/2 cpl as mentioned, but the choices were still FT, PT or IC.
