Question about mouse clicks when needing to - cr

Posted: Feb 20, 2011

I understand that mouse clicks are monitored because MQ encourages the use of hot keys, but what about needing to use the mouse to reference Google or MT bookmarked sites?  Is that not allowed?  Does a person need a second computer for that?

This whole MQ 'mouse-click' issue is the most - ridiculous thing Ive ever heard of. - sm

I don't know why so-called "hot keys" are any faster than mouse clicks. Even if you're using hot keys, although your hand hasn't left the keyboard, it has left the usual keys to use the peripheral keys. And what about having to learn all those hot keys? Some mornings I don't even remember where the "s" and the "p" are on the keyboard, let alone hot keys that I didn't set up, but some PC tech did, who doesn't even do MT.

They can monitor my mouse all they want, but no one is going to force me to "type their way". Let THEM do this job for a week, and then see if they still think they know it all.

I see it entirely different. After years of watching - people "do it their own way,"

[ In Reply To ..]
watching many failing to change as the job changed, even going broke, companies are finally stepping in to teach the new skills needed.

After giving the training a good try, I do feel a couple techniques I developed long ago work better for me than the trainers', but that's strictly because I'm still faster with them on the particular work I'm doing now. If, with time and further change, theirs eventually work better for me, I'll adopt them pronto.

Others I have adopted as improvements, including doing everything I can to keep my hands on the keyboard. I'm always open for ways to be faster, and the test is my line count.

BTW, probably 90% of the "new" techniques are things many of us have been doing for years. It was a surprise to learn everybody wasn't routinely using stuff like CTRL+SHIFT+END, etc. Only people who can type faster than fast dictators can talk--speeded up--have a good reason for not learning them long ago. I suspect hourly pay is a big reason why some never bothered to improve their speed dramatically with these standard 30-year-old keystroke combos. They didn't lose money not using them, and nobody ever told those valuable office linchpins they were actually falling way behind the curve. Or that production pay was in their future.

Many of the hot key combos are undesirably located, but the answer is not to continue the old slow ways but to fix that problem. I can suggest 2 pretty quick methods: One is to assign expander shorts to the combos that move the keystrokes into the center, thus maintaining as much as possible the old "home row" hand position. The second is to get a more compact keyboard, accepting the new home row position, moving between poised over navigation keys at the bottom up to the text keys.

More involved, but extremely worthwhile for those who have done it, is to reprogram the keyboard to put the keys where you need them. Your platform never uses the TAB key? CTRL used all the time? CAPs LOCK not often enough to justify that prime position? Maybe put CTRL where CAPS LOCK is, shift CAPS LOCK to TAB, send TAP to the outfield, maybe where END is, then bring END into the center where it belongs, replacing...? Etc. A zillion possibilities here.

In any case, resisting change long after comfortable old ways have become obsolete is not the way any of us make money.

CR, we're with different companies, but likely yours did provide combos for doing what you're wondering about. If not, you can make them for yourself. They probably talk about that on the tech forum. It's not hard with a list of steps some kind person has provided in front of you. :)

The instruction manual for Q ASR has a list of shortcuts. - You can C&P onto word doc and print out. nm

When I do something "my way", it's because it works - better than "their way". sm

I use whatever is the fastest and the easiest... for ME. If it's their system, then I use it. If it's mine, I use that. If it's both, I use both. But I don't change something that works well for me, simply because something else is mandated.
If everyone was as advanced as you, not needing help, - they would not be doing this. Obviously,

this program was not developed for you. Ignore it. Your exceptional production figures will speak for you loud and clear.

Muscle memory will soon set in and make using peripheral - keys 2nd nature. And you can program SM

your own hot keys, dont need to use those devised by non MT tech if you want.

so true - best tip yet

I see lots of resistance to the mouse issue. I understand we all like to do things the way we like to do them, but like it or not, using the keyboard is more expiditious than taking your hands off the keyboard.

It's also less stress on the arm/wrist, which should never be discounted.

Once you learn/make a keyboard shortcut it becomes second nature, just like any shortcut you use when transcribing.

so true - sm

Perhaps the keyboard is more expiditious for you, but maybe not everybody. Many are quite expiditious with the mouse and more so than using many of the shortcuts. I find the shortcuts to be harder on my hands and wrists. Not everyone is alike and if you are more efficient with the shortcuts, then so be it, but not everybody finds that to be true. Now I certainly use expansions, which make things quicker, but I use my mouse in combination with certain shortcuts and am quite quick at it. We should not judge everybody just because something works well for us.

Sound like you have no faith in yourself to adjust, learn - something new. nm

keystrokes - GAMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Regarding your question about mouse clicks and using the net...some people are not aware there are keystrokes for almost EVERY function you use on the computer. To toggle between your MT platform and internet or any other open programs you can use Alt-Tab, to toggle between multiple web page tabs you can press Ctl-Tab..To go to your home page press Alt-Home. In the day of VR, keeping your hands on that keyboard is essential to getting high line counts. Take some time to get to know your keyboard, program shortcuts, basic computer functions you may not be aware of. Speed is the key factor when editing and keeping your hands off the mouse and on that keyboard greatly increases productivity.

We do not get written up for mouse clicks but we cannot - transcend VR

[ In Reply To ..]
be promoted if you are not at a rate of 4 for shortcuts, navigations, etc. But pretty hard to get especially if the shortcut keys and navigation keys are not working. They have been broken for months and they will never get around to fixing them. We just pay the penalty of worrying about it. Typical transcend.

Really? Which shortcuts are broken? - curious

If you're talking about BeyondTXT, I haven't encountered ANY nonworking shortcut keys....

What I have done, however, is remap a few of them to a combination I was more used to, simply by creating a Shorthand entry that uses the same key combination, because Shorthand will always override the platform. For instance, I was constantly hitting CTRL-END by accident when aiming for some other key, which sent me all the way to the bottom of the report, which I did NOT want... so I made a Shorthand entry where CTRL-page down performs that function, and CTRL-END now just does a right arrow followed by left arrow, which means it leaves the cursor in the same place where it started out.

If you're talking about a platform that isn't BeyondTXT, then all bets are off....

Broken Shortcuts??? - Transcend employee

[ In Reply To ..]
If you are talking about BeyondTXT, I love to find posts about the platform because if it is negative it is always a major exaggeration of the true story.

I agree with curious. I have not noticed any broken shortcuts. You should be complaining on a daily basis not only to your TL but the ROM and editing proficiency administrator.

TS encourages its employees to use ALL available shortcuts and if they are not working they WOULD WANT TO KNOW about it!

I just got my second DEP ASR Productivity Results.  If the person that has time to count mouse clicks, time spent away from keyboard, etc is reading this, then answer this, why don't you take into account time spent reading multiple client profiles, time spent reading sample reports to get information, etc?  Do you not expect us to leave our chairs occasionally?  I personally am more suited to using my mouse.  A lot of the shortcuts just didn't work as well for me.& ...

Got The Report On Mouse Clicks.
Feb 15, 2011

I guess I am truly stupid.  The numbers mean nothing to me.  On my report they are gauged against nothing -- just with a goal to "improve."  My lines were 197 per hour (which is incorrect and too high) and I guess my "corrected" number if I was worth my salt and editing properly is 297.  Most confusing document they have sent me thus far.  I would be angrier probably IF I COULD UNDERSTAND IT.  ...

Key Strokes Vs Mouse Clicks
Apr 12, 2011

I got an email giving all the figures of how many keystrokes I had during a certain period of time (can't remember when for sure) and inactive time in an ASR job, etc.  Do many of you only use the keyboard and not the mouse?  I've tried to learn all the keyboard functions and for me it's a lot easier to use the mouse and I don't think that has slowed me down any.  They're not telling me not to use the mouse but instead showing how many more keystrokes ...

FOR THOSE WHO COUNT OUR MOUSE CLICKS, IDLE TIME, ETC

Due to the slowness from Kapersky, pausing to pray (some hospitals do this), physicians talking with others in the background, physicians asking me to wait a minute (like I have a choice) and many other interruptions my idle time may be increased.  All of these things have happened to me within the last week.  Please do something about Kapersky.  This should have no bearing on our ability to work--we can't be productive with this going on.  ...
