Editors? How long did it take you? - Hopeful

Posted: Apr 07, 2011

I've been an MT for many years but I am new to SR editing and I am feeling kind of incompetent.  Today it took me 45 minutes to edit 1 note which was 57 lines long Surprised  I've worked for 5 hours today so far and I have 500 lines.  For any MTs out there who switched over to editing, how long did it take you to get up to speed with it and earning a decent hourly wage?  For the experienced editors, about how many lines do you edit per hour?

I do like the company I'm working for, the platform is very easy, and my account is low ESL.  Everything is perfect, except my line count!! I'm just really hoping I can get better at this because I really like the idea of editing instead of straight transcription, as I don't get hand pain with the editing.

So, any advice or tips for me from experienced editors? How long did it take you to be up and running with it?

editing takes time - Nell

Some editing takes more time. Everything is relative. Are your dictators good? You say you have little ESL, so that's a plus. It took me a while because the company I worked for hired unqualified MTs. If you have good MTs then your part of the job is much easier, if not, you may have to spend more time, and sometimes read everything word for word, which takes way too much time. I don't know how many lines per hour and it shouldn't matter. You should be paid by the hour, not by the line, as you will never make decent money that way. Don't be so hard on yourself. It all depends on what you working with.

Speech Rec Engine - Hopeful

Maybe I should have been more specific, but I am editing notes that a speech recognition engine has produced, not another MT. I do have to read everything word for word, add in words here, take out wrong words there... I wish I were getting paid by the hour.

It depends a lot on the doctor too. I did some editing today, and one doc was so bad that I had to change almost every other word in a 5+ minute dictation. It would have been faster to erase it and start all over. (I made about $3.00/hr on him.)

The next female doc I did after him was nice and clear and I made more like $10/hr with her. I will never be able to make much with editing after going thru the report twice. I'm much faster typing notes and getting paid that rate to type. It does give your fingers a break though.

Hopefully you will have decent doctors who talk clear, which will help your line count get better. Good Luck!

Dictators good or bad, good/bad MTs, makes no difference. - jus me

Mmodal is just bad all the way around. Best dictator I have ever done always says "consented for epidural steroid" and for 8 months mmodal transcribes it as "consents to oral surgery". It never learns and of course no one will ever bother to go in and get it corrected. I would rather have to deal with offshore helping on accounts and get rid of mmodal forever. I think we would have much better quality than we have now.

It doesn't matter how good the other MTs are. The VR has to learn the - physician

[ In Reply To ..]
I just started working on VR and most of the doctors on it are ESLs. The stupid VR doesn't understand them any better than I do, but unfortunately, my pay has been cut in half just to do the VR. The VR I have been doing doesn't even recognize some of the easiest things sometimes. It just leaves the word out. I am working on Express Editor. I have gotten up to 1600-1700 lines in an 8 hour pay period, both VR and straight typing, in a week and a half, but as I said, with the cut in pay, it doesn't really matter as I will have to get up to a lot more than that to make the money I want to make. I don't see how I ever could with all the ESLs that the VR cannot understand. Not sure why these physicians are in VR, but they are and at a lower rate of pay. I guess this is just one of the many reasons a lot of us do not want to do VR. The pay sucks for spending the same mount of time in a VR document as in a straight transcription document. The person above telling you it depends on whether the other transcriptionists are good or not is full of it.

Forgot to mention also that even when the physician says the same thing - more than once in a report

[ In Reply To ..]
the VR I work on can hear it 2 different ways and typed out 2 totally different things for what the physician said. There is nothing that will make me believe that the other transcriptionist correcting it is going to teach the VR what the physician is saying. The physician has to do that. I don't know why my supervisor tried to sell me this crock of crap, but after working on this, I can see it is just a crock of crap. I'm not training it anything. It is typing what it thinks it hears when the words come out of the physician's mouth.

Depends. If mmodal, you will never get a count. If e-scription, you can survive. - Jus me

Mmodal is the worst program there is and it will never learn or get anything right. I redo about 50% or more of their reports as straight transcribing. I can do 2-3 times as many lines on escription because at least their system works. Some of these MTSOs are sold on mmodal, but I can tell you it is absolutely the worst program out there.

Using MModal - SoSad

[ In Reply To ..]
I am using MModal and I feel like I am getting nowhere. I am averaging $7 an hour. Today I had 2 good hours were I actually got up to $12 an hour. I can't pay my bills like this. When the dictators are VERY clear, the SR does really well. I've had notes where I only had to change a word or 2. But that is definitely the minority :(

Hey, I'm working on e-scription and it leaves words off all the time that sounded plain - as day to me

Any editors here doing 3000 to 4000 per day? - Hopeful

That is what I need to get up to, so just wondering if it is actually possible and if anyone is doing that kind of volume...

Absolutely possible! I do 500 LPH average. nm - No joke

Thanks for posting this. It at least gives me some hope. If you don't mind my asking, how long did it take you to get up to 500 LPH? I've been an MT for 16 years but only editing for 2 weeks now. I don't expect to be super fast yet, but just wondering how long it might take. Also, what are you using? Escription?
you need a word expander program - mtmom
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not up to 500/hour yet, but I am around 400/hour. The difference - using a word expander and knowing all Windows program shortcuts on the keyboard. The less you use your mouse, the faster you will be. There are keyboard shortcuts that will make you not need your mouse much at all to go through a report, and it doesn't matter what platform you use. It's part of Windows. Less mouse usage and using a word expander is the only way to kind of make money using VR.
Took a few months. nm - Hang in There!

500 LPH is incredible. I started off slow but I am picking up speed and am at about 300 LPH now. If I could 400 I would be happy, 500 would be amazing.

It is hard and sometimes I get depressed when I read all the negativity surrounding VR. I get it that it is a struggle and hard to make decent money but since it isn't going away, the next best thing is to master it and get faster.

Any tips from those are doing 400+ LPH are much appreciated.
Gaming Keyboard - VRMT
[ In Reply To ..]
I was searching the archives the other night regarding VR and I came across a couple people saying they use gaming keyboards and that it has really made a big difference for them. Those keyboards apparently have some extra programmable keys, or something. Any editors here use one? Is it hard to set up/figure out? I would be willing to give it a try if I could figure out how to use it. I'm still stuck at 175 lph, maybe 200 tops :(

That's still a huge cut in pay for me since I'm typing 350-400 LPH - I would have to do 700-800 LPH

For TT/MT/Editors:
Feb 21, 2015

The day we suddenly ran out of work in early February was when another MTSO got the account.  For my fellow MTs who are suffering from no work from that account, you can go to TTS, who is still hiring for it. Line rate for employees .01 cent less than TT but they pay headers, which TT did not.  You can make the same (.01 cent more if you decide to be an IC rather than employee).   I hope this info can help some who need the work and no longer have it.  Doubt IMEDX will ever g ...

I Think We May Be Secure The Need For Editors.
Jan 04, 2013

I'm back to editing after a few years away from it and can't believe how bad the software still is. The company I worked for 3 years ago used better software and the drafts were not that bad. Now I'm with a different company using not the best editing software. Not sure what the docs are using, but the VR really does a bad job, even with very good dictators. On words it doesn't understand it ignores them and then picks up when it understands it again. The errors it is makin ...

Editors Expected To ..... ?
Apr 13, 2013

I started a new client for an MTSO recently. One ESL dictator's H&Ps are so out of order they require a ton of reformatting. This is the order he dictated: History of Present Illness, Past Medical History, Chief Complaint, Plan, PE, Review of Systems, Assessment/Plan. The template has to have formatting changed (bold headings and point size), the guy is very difficult to understand, does not use proper grammar and needs most sentences restructured. He slurs through the Review of Systems ...
