For editors who make over $20K a year (sm) - How do you do it?

With over 2 decades experience I can't make over $8. per hour with very rare exceptions were I get great dictators, long reports without the need to research demographics or other data. Where am I going wrong?

That made the biggest difference for me when someone suggested it to me. For the good dictators, I can increase speed to 150% and zip through them! Good luck.

Got corrected by QA for "errors" such as "the patient was seen" vs "patient was seen" and are vs were as in "lab tests are/were negative". SO frustrating.

I find most dictators, after a pause, speak very fast to "catch up", so adjusting the speed constantly takes too long. The great dictators who speak about the same speed I can turn up to fast speed. Also, with our platform it takes a long time to adjust speed with the mouse. Maybe I can find a way to do a command in IT for that. Hmmm. Ya got me thinking.

With over 20 years of experience, I too am now making about $8 per hour. Here's what I think I'm doing wrong: Putting up with line rates that are set too low to make the kind of living that this should pay, especially since I am now getting only the most difficult work.

And, here's what I'm going to do about it: Leave MT.

I feel for you. I have almost 20 years of experience as well, and I am paid crumbs for difficult work that not just anyone or any machine can do (as is obvious by their speech recognition). I would've loved to have retired from MT as I loved my job, but unfortunately the only thing to do now is to walk away from it and start another career. I feel it's going to be a difficult road going to school, starting a new career, etc., but it should be well worth it in the end. Good luck to all of you!

100% perfect when the original draft is for the most part (in my case) 75%. I'm tired of it.

The day we suddenly ran out of work in early February was when another MTSO got the account. For my fellow MTs who are suffering from no work from that account, you can go to TTS, who is still hiring for it. Line rate for employees .01 cent less than TT but they pay headers, which TT did not. You can make the same (.01 cent more if you decide to be an IC rather than employee). I've been an MT for many years but I am new to SR editing and I am feeling kind of incompetent. Today it took me 45 minutes to edit 1 note which was 57 lines long I've worked for 5 hours today so far and I have 500 lines. I'm back to editing after a few years away from it and can't believe how bad the software still is. The company I worked for 3 years ago used better software and the drafts were not that bad. Now I'm with a different company using not the best editing software. Not sure what the docs are using, but the VR really does a bad job, even with very good dictators. I started a new client for an MTSO recently. One ESL dictator's H&Ps are so out of order they require a ton of reformatting. This is the order he dictated: History of Present Illness, Past Medical History, Chief Complaint, Plan, PE, Review of Systems, Assessment/Plan. The template has to have formatting changed (bold headings and point size), the guy is very difficult to understand, does not use proper grammar and needs most sentences restructured. Hi There! Just curious if there are any SoftScript editing staff out here. I seem to be struggling a lot with making any money since beginning there. Trying to determine the norm for providing free work. I spend more time fixing dictator's demographic errors demographic errors and searching for data that should have been dictated than I do editing. I'm just wondering if other editors just note these problems for QA to deal with or are you also working pretty much for free? Anyone been fired for refusing to work for free? ...

I find it interesting that the specs have changed. I'm happy to see these changes... Doctors names in report verbatim. Headers abbreviated verbatim. (LABS, MEDS, HISTORY, HPI, etc). Copy-Paste requests verbatim. Skip silence (for dictators who have never heard of the pause command. Will dictators finally get the message that mumbled abbreviations with B, C, D, E, P, T, ...

When you get a file sent to your que and it has a couple of blanks, are you paid for the whole file just for opening it or just the blanks you fill in?
