Can you make any $$ with VR??? - Sovbulls

Okay, I'm waaaay behind the times. I have been doing straight transcription for 35 years and am about to switch to VR editing at 0.45 cents per line. Good Grief. Can I make any money doing this?? My straight transcription accounts have all switched over about 80% of their work to VR and left all the truly terrible dictators on straight.

Good money. Once you get the hang of it and if work requires minimal editing, you might be able to do 250 to 350 lph on average. (I do.) At 0.045/line, 250 lines = $11.25/hour, 300 lines = 13.50/hour, and 350 lines = $15.75/hour. But, big BUT, if you get lousy SR a good deal of the time and do, say 150 to 200 lph, you're not going to make much. I've been doing SR for 1-1/2 years and like you, only did straight MT for 35+ years. It took me a while to get the hang of it, but now I actually like it better than straight MT; although some don't, luckily I do.

A million years ago I used to have a really good income with MT, about $50,000/year. These days I'm lucky to do half that. This profession has really gone the way of the DoDo bird, BUT....I'm not trained to do anything else, and too old to want to! If I could make #25-30 yearly with VR that would be great. I just did my income tax today and last year I made $35,231.79 working six hours a day, straight typing. I am posting this so people can see that it CAN be done. Yes, I have many years of experience. But there are others out there with just as much experience, and they make equal to or more than what I do. I am working for a mid-sized Nationa. So, please, do not pronounce the profession dead quite yet.

her question is about VR. Last year was the first time I have done VR. I worked 8 hours/5 days. I made $18,000 so the answer is: No, you cannot make "good" money on VR. I have 30+ years experience as a MT. This year, I have kicked it up a notch, quit dwelling on all the crap that we are not paid for, etc. Now I'm making a little over $100/day, which is $12.50/hour. That is better than any job I can find in my area (I'm in the South, pay sucks.)

I found 2 jobs I qualified for, both paid $8-9/hour. Plus gas, lunches and work clothes. I might has well stay put here for another 6 years and then retire.

VR takes almost as long as straight typing when you have to change a lot in a report, but for half the money.

$23,000 this past year. This is 3 days per week with 1 weekend per month. I averaged a little over $20.00 per hour, no overtime. Have over 35+ years of experience.

how good the doctors are and how good the VR software is. I make 0.05/line right now and average $18-20 an hour. Speed up the good dictators and stay focused. It is a pretty difficult transition to make (I ended up with de Quervains on my right since most of my editing - arrow keys, etc. - are on the right). Hang in there, though, and you'll catch on. Not unless you cheat, take shortcuts, and speed up reports to about 150% and stay on task and work 55 minutes of every hour. By cheating I mean this: If your account specs say something should not be capitalized but it keeps coming up capitalized no matter how many times you change case, leave it alone. Apparently VR isn't going to catch on, and 30 days after you go off 100% QA they aren't going to bother you with QA, because QA gets paid less than editors. Good luck.

which is the quality of the VR engine. The less "extra work for free" you are required to do depending on your platform makes a difference too. As you can see, some do better than others, depending on many things.

I've been working with this company for over 90 days. The first 90 days was a paid internship. Paid hourly, minimum wage. I am now a full time employee...paid on production. Apparently the account I work on will be going completely offshore. I am being moved to an account that I know has work (at least for now, not sure how many others will be switched to this one too). Didn't MQ make the CTL's become MME's? If that happens to the MT's and you reject it, I assume you will be fired and if so, can you still collect unemployment? What if you they point blank and say, you have to become an MME or you will have look elsewhere. Can you somehow collect unemployment whether you quit or get fired or will you lose out unemployment benefits. Basically, it is a no win situation for us MT's? ...

I get soo uncomfortable sitting for at least 8 hours every day. My right arm and hand just ache/sore constantly, and my fingers, especially on my right hand, are really getting painful. I sit with my keyboard on my lap (on a pillow), sit with a pillow underneath and behind me. My heel even hurts from using the foot pedal.
