Anyone using Hughesnet Business? - Sherri

Trying to figure out a way to live in the country and still work. I know people have said that using satellite such as wildblue has been a disaster for them, but I see that hughesnet has business plans. With these you get a larger dish, faster speeds, and what sounds like a more stable connection. It looks to me like it could work, hoping for some input from anyone who has tried it or is presently working with it. Thanks so much.

I've had mine for about five years, though, so maybe it's changed. Personally, I hate them with a passion. If the wind blows, the signal drops, if it rains the signal drops, if there are fluffy white clouds, the signal drops. I had it drop one time for a couple hours due to sun spots (or at least that's what they told me when I called).

It has worked on a number of platforms. The only one that I had a particularly difficult time with was Dictaphone Ex-Text. Even then it worked, but it was horribly horribly slow when entering things like cc's and demographics. While I am accustomed to some wait just because it's satellite, this was long enough that I'd start a game of solitaire while I waited. Then, even though it came up halfway through, I'd just go ahead and finish the game (or whatever else I did while I was waiting), so it ended up a major time waster in several ways for me.

Also, the price on it is ridiculous. I have the intermediate plane, which runs me $75/month. And there are caps on how much you can download on a daily basis. Work doesn't take up too much of a chunk of it, but the download allowance gets used up sort-of stealthily. Open a window to read a news story, if there's a video on the page, there goes a chunk of download status as they start to download and buffer without you telling them to. I don't have children here now, but my daughter had come to visit and downloaded 3 half-hour videos from You-Tube and that was all it took to push me over my download cap, at which time they put the internet equivalent of the Denver Boot on your service and hold it hostage- which meant essentially no working because it slowed the connection to the point that work didn't think I was really connected- until I paid $7-8.

If I had any alternative to Hughes (and in fairness to them, I've heard all satellite is essentially the same), I would jump on it. But for me, it's this or dialup. I couldn't even get the cell phone companies internet out here. Good luck, and just be prepared to do a lot of mumbling under your breath, and keep a nail file by the keyboard for wait times.

Your reply is much appreciated. Ex-Text is what I am on now, so it wasn't exactly the news I wanted to hear. However, the business option is advertised as download up to 5 mbps and upload up to 1024 kbps as compared to the residential of 1.5 mbps/250 kbps. It is a lot more expensive too at $349.99.

If anyone else has any experience with this please don't be shy! Thanks in advance.

Cable was not available, so I asked around to some other MTs and found out what they were using. Look in your local phone book under internet providers and see if there is a local company that might be able to help you. The official name of what I have is a "fixed position terrestrial wireless". I have a dish on my house and it reads off a tower in the next town. I rarely, rarely have trouble.

...at my old house. I really miss it, I rarely had trouble with mine either. I have Comcast now and it seems like I'm always having to "wait" for it...just a few seconds, but nonetheless wait. Thanks for your suggestion.

Mine isn't your traditional wireless like offered by Verizon. I have a dish that they came out and mounted to my roof (but NOT DirecTV, Wild Blue or one of those) and it reads off one of 2 towers in neighboring towns, not from a satellite floating who knows where. I have local help if I run into trouble, which is nice too.

Some say it's pricey...I pay $50 month, but honestly, it is the most reliable internet service I have ever had. Before we moved here and still lived in town, I started back waaaayyyy back with dial up, then got cable and have had DirecTV too. This is, hands down, the best I have ever had.

That is what I had too...through a little company where I lived. I am amazed why these transcription companies insist on either DSL or cable. My wireless was far better than anything I have used too. After your suggestion, I did some more searching, and found one possibility a couple of towns away (wireless)...keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks again.

I hope it works for you. My small town company has grown a LOT over the last 4 years that I have been using them and now they serve a much, much larger area than when I first started with them.

The actual office for the company that serves me is at least 20 miles away.

I really resent the fact of being critiqued on how i transcribe/edit a report. Why is it anybody's business if I use the mouse, keystrokes, or type it with my toes, as long as the report gets done? I believe greed has taken over the transcription industry. If the client is charged so much per line, does he only have to pay half for voice recognition? I doubt it. The conglomerate I type for mostly (which is about 30 university clinics, each with 150 or so non-English-speaking residents) sends almost everything in "letter" form. There is a useless letter standard, but I spend the first 1-2 minutes of the dictation on the address (and have to manually re-enter into the cc list), usually have to go Google to try to find how Dr. Swishandswash spells his name and address in Podunkville.
