Windows XP/printer (non-MT) tech question - Bilboa

Posted: Jan 27, 2013

Okay, I admit it, I'm being lazy posting here, because it's just a computer tech question, not an MT-equipment-related one.  However, I hang out here and know there are some pretty tech-savvy folks, so I figured it was worth tossing it out there.

I have an HP4 LaserJet printer (an OLD workhorse -- we're talking a 20-year-old printer and still going strong) and recently bought a new PC running Windows XP.

The LaserJet is a parallel printer, and the new PC doesn't have a parallel port.

I looked on eBay and bought a new cable with the appropriate plug at the printer end and a USB plug at the computer end.  Cabled them up, went through the protocol with the Windows wizard to install the stock driver for the HP4.  I have tried specifying ports LPT1, COM1, and "Virtual printer port for USB," without getting anything to print

Anyone got a clue, perchance?

Thanks!

I have one of those old laser jet printers. It's a 4000. My windows XP computer is probably 5 years old. I know when we tried to hook up the printer with the windows XP we had a lot of trouble. I think my husband had to get a different cable. He is sleeping now. Otherwise I would ask him. When I looked at the ports on the computer, it shows LPT3. I don't know if this helps you.

Perhaps you require some more info on how to setup the printer on the system. See here if you can find something useful.

I'm sure you have already done this but... - Angie

Is the HP 4L set as the default printer?
Control Panel
Printers
Right click HP 4L
Set as default

Also, after hitting CTL P, make sure "print to file" is not checked.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I have an old HP 4L too, still working and is the best printer I have ever owned as is the HP 6P.

Weird Printer
Jun 23, 2012

I just sent a document to my Hewlett Packard printer and set it for 3 copies.  The first copy was fine.  The second and third copies looked like a new language.  On further inspection, it was obvious that each letter of the alphabet and number was offset by one.  In other words, a became b, b became c, 1 became 2, etc.  When I sent a request to print just one more copy at a time, it printed just fine.  This is undoubtedly the strangest thing that I've ever had ...

Oct 14, 2014

Does that suggest you will need daily patient lists faxed to you that are hard to read and you have to stop and glean information from them that you are not being paid to do? Just wondering.  I just assumed all of that from the need of a fax machine.  Anyone else venture a guess?      ...

Windows 7 And Using Windows XP Mode
Aug 05, 2011

Has anyone ever wanted to work for a company that only used Windows XP and you had Windows 7 but could virtually move to XP mode?  Could you download their software on the XP mode side and get it to work?  I had a job interview where their software only worked on XP.  I thought I could do that, but I had to also have Word 2003.  I only have 2010, but it has the compatability pack for 2003, BUT the client's software couldn't differentiate that.  If I maybe bough ...

Radiology Tech Job?

Tech People
Oct 11, 2014

Honestly, why is it that tech wants to make an MTs' life miserable. Just got a new thing to fill out and I cannot open it. I have never used Excel if that is what it is. My computer has no program for me to open it. At any rate, I wonder why these people have to make things so hard. This new computer, a Windows 7 (which I had to have to do my work) is so complicated now. You don't get these other programs like you did on the other computers. You have to buy Word, Excel ...

FutureNet Tech
Dec 16, 2014

I was hired by FNT a couple of months ago and have found their editing platform less than ideal as it relates to production.  It's awkward and cumberson, allowing neither keyboard or mouse proficiency; it's a bad combination of both. I'm wondering if anyone out there has worked at FutureNet and found the secret to making money with their no-name platform that's Word based but does not allow auto-correct and has reassigned Word keyboard commands for their own use. Also, ...
