Remember when getting a CMT differential was the norm? - sm

Posted: Dec 19, 2012

Just reminscing, lol.  Five years ago I used to get a 1 cpl CMT differential and that was not uncommon or hard to find.  Through a buyout by Transcend that differential was taken away and now with another buyout Nuance not only has no differential also, but wants to pay those of us with a CMT the same rate as a new hire with no credential.  I love the ads that say "CMT or RMT preferred" but the hidden ending to that sentence is "but we don't want to pay you for it."  Well, guess I won't be paying the money to renew that next time.  What a big fat waste.

It is definitely worthless now. - anon

I never bothered to get one but would definitely not do it now.

It is just as bad to have 15+ years of experience and get paid the same as someone with a year.

At some point I suppose we will have to come to grips with the fact that this job is the equivalent of flipping burgers, at least wage-wise. In truth it takes a lot of skill to be a good MT, but with wages like this I shudder to think what medical records will look like in 10 years when it is nothing but VR and offshore MTs doing the work.

I thought so too - but I was wrong

My CMT came up for renewal last summer. I was really thinking about not renewing, but I had completed over two-thirds of my CECs and didn't want to put all of that time and energy to waste. I renewed it thinking that I had just wasted my money, but I was looking for a new job outside of Nuance and thought it might help me in that. I was hired by a very small MTSO who was looking to hire only someone with their CMT. I now work as an IC Monday-Friday, no holidays, and make 11 cpl for straight typing. I am SO glad that I renewed my CMT! I know that my IC job might not last forever with the state of the industry these days, but I am going to enjoy it while it lasts.

CMT differential - Not a CMT

Just so you know, I always made it perfectly clear, despite my non-CMT status, and because of my 20+ years of acute care teaching hospital in-house experience, I wanted the top rate and I always got it. Perhaps this was so because I started transcribing back in the day on a typewriter (not a self correcting IBM selectric) making multicolor carbon copies with multi-colored correction fluid permanently staining my fingers. The dictation was done on a big tank where the audio got worse and worse as you progressed toward the middle. The recruiters could relate, and understood how I felt about this. The kind of experience I had was (and is) worth far more than a CMT, unless every CMT out there can produce 1500 or more perfect lines a day of transcription on an electric typewriter, making 4 to 6 carbons, all in different colors, with only Dorlands, Webers, and the Surgeon's syllabus as references (plus of course your little black book where you wrote in new terms in pencil until you were able to confirm, and then you wrote them in, in ink.) And yes, the reports had to be perfect, because the supervisors of transcription in those days were always ancient dragon ladies who knew everything, more medicine than any of the doctors, more rules of grammar, etc., than any English teacher. They caught every typo (they probably never slept) and had no life outside of transcription -- and on top of that would send you home to change clothes if your skirt was too short, but you had to make up your time, no PTO for you!

Now that brings back some memories! - Those were the days

I remember those days as well. My point was in the last 10 years it's been hard to find an employer willing to pay much more for talent and knowledge, with the exception of paying for that CMT differential. I got it solely for this reason way back when they were still the AAMT, years before the new name. Now, that doesn't even work anymore. They don't give pay exceptions for anything anymore. I don't like to sound like I'm bragging, but I'm proud to be darn good at my job, and they just don't care. All it does is qualify me for their more difficult work at the same pay, like that should be some honor and their way of recognition of my abilities. Yeah, now that I've experienced Nuance, I'm done. I can't relocate and hospital jobs are hard to come by. And I'm afraid to work for any small company for fear they'll just get bought by Nuance.

Excuse any typos. I'm typing on my phone.

Overstaffing: The New Norm?
Apr 16, 2011

Just wondering if there are ANY MTSOs out there that don't overstaff their accounts.  Read the boards here; it's fairly obvious that ALL if not MOST of them have overstaffed their accounts. And to the Keystrokes Damage Control team, don't even bother with your spin.  Keystrokes accounts are grossly overstaffed!  And even IF some of them weren't, as a few on here repeatedly proclaim, then that is an INDICTMENT of the "PRODUCTION COORDINATORS ...

When Quitting/is This The Norm?
Apr 10, 2012

I gave notice to my employer last week that I had to quit. I sent her a very nice email thanking her for the opportunity, but it just wasn't going to work out for me. I was very pleasant and upbeat, but I have yet to receive an acknowledgement. I was even able to log in with my password still. It's been 5 days now. You'd think she would have read her email by now, right? ...

MTSO Overstaffing Is The NORM Now, Right?
Dec 08, 2011

Last year I left the moderate-sized MTSO I worked for to work for a smaller company.   My former employer had overstaffed the accounts to the point that I was borderline homeless, so I had no choice but to leave. At first, things were better at the new company.  The CPL is slightly better (9 versus 8 at the other gig), and I was making about $1200 every 2 weeks.  That isn't great but at least I can live on it, and I work less than 30 hours per week.  About a ...

IC Contract Question - Is This The Norm??
Feb 17, 2013

What do you think of this? Is this a normal inclusion on a contract? Personally, I think this is a load of B.S. (P.S., they only pay 5.75 cents/per line to begin with, for straight transcription.) Any errors requiring extra processing (blanks/questions) or reprocessing (resends) created by the Subcontractor will incur a charge that will be billed to the Subcontractor by the Contractor. Charges will be made on a per-line basis of the entire (re)processed document with said line being 65 charact ...

Is Cherrypicking Allowed At Your Company? Is This The Norm?
Aug 26, 2011

I have been with my company for many years and have liked the account I am on until the past 3 months.  Three months ago, they hired on 3 new MTs and now suddenly all the easy doctors disappear from the queue first, even if there are other reports out of TAT.  Warnings have been given by account manager, but only 2 days later, the cherrypickers are back at it.  I am now getting stuck with a majority of the harder docs that no one wants to do and have watched my pay ...

Is This The Norm For This Time Of Year - Meaning
Nov 24, 2012

long does this usually last? I am in the process to applying for other jobs to places in my area, non-MT and even got a couple resumes out for some Part Time IC positions. Wondering if I should apply for partial unemployment? Is this a yearly thing this time of the year? No work for the past two days and looking at the statistics, there is only just over 12,000 jobs out there company wide and for each job out there, there is probbly 5 MTs waiting and hoping to snag it. ...

CMT Differential?
May 05, 2010

Hi, everyone: I see here and there some companies state they pay a differential for CMT status.  Anyone out there who knows which companies do so and whether they actually follow through/and or what the differential is?  I got my CMT a couple of years ago and then, for several reasons, stopped working as an MT, but I am considering going back part-time.  Thanks!  Geedub ...

Holiday Pay Differential
Nov 27, 2009

Last holiday (Labor Day) I was paid a differential.  It is usually time and a half so going by your base you will see an additional line on your paystub of holiday lines:  ex.  if your base rate is 0.08 you will see holiday pay 0.1200 x 1000 lines.  As far as I know, we have not received any notification that we do not get holiday pay.  ...

Jan 02, 2011

I think I may have spoken too soon when I said they basically got rid of it.  Math is definitely not my thing, but after studying it further, isn't it basically the same?  It says, An additional $0.0075 per line or $0.09 per report for work transcribed between the hours of:  (and then it gives the different hours for each time zone)............. Isn't that what it was before?  And the .09 cents per report, is this for radiology reports?  ??? ...

How Does Shift Differential Work?
Dec 26, 2012

Kinda confused about the shift differential and how it works.  I worked about 2.5 hours before the 6:00 a.m cutoff.  I did 1008 lines today in that amount of time.  Do I take the 1008 and multiply it by my shift differential amount and then subtract that 1008 from the total lines for the day, or is the shift differential "extra" in our pay?  Really don't have a clue how to figure this and I work these hours everyday.  Would like to know before the first paychec ...
