Leaving Nuance, have computer question... - sm

Posted: Dec 01, 2014

I hope I have posted this on the correct board.

As I do not have a good feeling whatsoever about this new pay plan at Nuance, I am preparing to leave this nasty company after the first of the year and am trying to get everything in order. The first order of business is to buy a new computer. I believe new computers come with Windows 8. Does anyone know if that is compatible with most transcription needs today, or does one have to have Windows 7 installed? If so, is that commercially available?

I imagine the answers to this question will help a lot of people. Thank you.

I don't know what transcription companies are using, but sm - anon

You can buy a great refurbished computer for under $150. I bought one with Windows 7 Pro and have had it for one year for personal use. No problems whatsover.

Now, I recall reading that Microsoft will no longer be selling Windows 7 in the future, but will be supporting it for awhile. Please check on that if yu need Windows 7. Not sure if this is correct information.

I recently purchased a computer with Windows 8.1 on it and have had no problems with running the programs required of me as an IC for either company that I contract with.

I purchased mine through QVC on their "Easy Pay" program. It is a Dell laptop and comes with lifetime tech support.

One thing to keep in mind is the type of processor and the speed. An AMD processor is generally slower than a Pentium. Also can you add more memory to the machine if you need to down the road. Buying a refurbished computer is fine, as long as it has been "properly refurbished," by that I mean a place like Tiger Direct or Best Buy, etc.

Also, I was told my many techs in the process of having things installed and working on my computer that there is a new version of Windows being released sometime next year. Good luck with whatever you decide and good luck with getting out and away from that AWFUL company!

You can buy Windows 7 now (again) - sm

Last year you could not get Windows 7. Everyone hated 8 (although 8.1 is better). Now there are new computers selling again with Windows 7. Try the big box store that sells items in bulk...starts with a Cost... I guess they deleted my first message for saying the name?

You are right, most computers being sold are either Windows 8 or 8.1. My experience recently has been that a large number of companies do still want their MTs to have Windows 7, but many are now updating to allow for Windows 8 and 8.1. Like one of the other posters stated, you can definitely find Windows 7 machines in big box stores as well as online; they seem to vary in price depending on several factors. I also agree, go with a good Pentium processor. Until this year, I strongly disliked Dell and was a die-hard HP customer (my HP pavilion with Windows ME lasted for 13 years, although she was pretty much never used for online activity of any kind), but my newest system is a Dell Inspiron, and I really do love it, not at all disappointed in any way with this product. Best of luck with everything :)

If I buy a new PC with W7, will it also have W8? - sm

That's probably a stupid question, but I'm just trying to cover all my bases at the least possible cost.

I have an HP laptop with Windows 7, but it gets really hot with just a little use. I even use a fan pad under it and it still gets super hot. I would rather have a desktop and absolutely hate to spend the money, but this is a necessary expense as I must get out of Nuance.

Nuance MUST be run by robots because I just cannot imagine a human being would be so cold and heartless.

Thank you to all for your answers.

Answer to your question re: Will it also have Win 8 - nn

[ In Reply To ..]
Not likely, but if it has a powerful enough processor and enough memory, then you might be able to upgrade it to Windows 8 or 8.1. Of course too, you would have to more than likely pay for the upgrade and computers now with Windows 8.1 cannot be downgraded to Windows 7 (that is what I was told when I wanted to do so).

I would try to find a computer - with

Windows 7 Professional. That will be around for a long while because a lot of businesses will continue to use it. You can look on different sites for computers with Windows 7 Professional. Staples had some. Windows 8 is too different and frustrating. I doubt any transcription companies are using it. I think you can update in the future from Windows 7 professional too, whenever they come up with the next better thing than Windows 8, which most people hate.

Couple things to consider: Are you going to use the computer for things other than work? If so, you want to get all the fun things you may want. If you are going to use it strictly for transcription, you may want to wait to get a computer until you get a new job. Many companies require you use outdated software to accommodate their system. If you work for a company that uses a "web-based" platform, it is very likely that any new computer will work. I greatly prefer web-based platforms because then I don't have to support their software on my computer; I just access their server and presto, I'm up and running. If you have a strong Internet connection, that's the way to go IMHO. No matter what route you take, transcription applications take very little computing power. A low end computer is all you need. Now about wants...that's for you to decide. Good luck in the next step of your journey!

Win 7 OS is old, but you can get it still.

You cannot run 2 different operating systems on the same CPU, so you cannot have Win 7 and Win 8 on the same computer.

Try looking at ads, MT daily, etc. They will list in the add what OS you need for their software.

Best wishes,

Before Leaving Nuance Think Of This...
Jan 29, 2013

I know some peoplea are going to slam me but so be it.   I just ask those talking about leaving to consider the following while making your decision:  1.  Will the next employer guarantee you won't run out of work or pay you for downtime if you do? 2.  Do they give you 401(k) matching at the same level Nuance does or better? 3.  Do they pay you the average hourly wage you make for vacation/sick days or do they limiit your dollar amount, even if you normally earn ...

Thinking Of Leaving TT For Nuance
Jul 15, 2011

Would that be a bad move?  At least if I went to Nuance, I wouldn't have to worry about being bought out!  I have worked for TT for three years.  I used to love it there.  So much work and the overtime bonus was awesome.  I work second shift and have for the entire three years and it's really getting to me.  Some days I have only 4 or 5 hours of work, which was never a problem until lately.  My paychecks are shrinking every month.  The rumors goi ...

QC Leaving?? Leaving More Work For MTs?
Jun 14, 2015

Sorry QC was put on the grid and suffering losses (like we have), but from my point of view the more of them leave, the more work left for us.  Isn't that horrible we are reduced to feeling that way about our co-workers??? Some QC say they are not allowed to do MT unless the account is behind, some say they are allowed when they run out of work.   From the length of time we have been suffering from OOW I have to believe they can and do jump in on our work when out of QC ...

Leaving The Q.
Jul 20, 2011

Just wanted to add my voice to the growing chorus of long-timers leaving the Q finally. The account I worked on for 15 years just up and vanished Monday - without a word to any of us. Not Sad To Be Leaving The Q,
Sep 10, 2011

I've been cleaning out my office to start a new job soon, and I came across some things from the good old days, i.e., before the Q.  I found email certificates my first CCM from 10 years ago sent when I kicked it line count and quality-wise.  She didn't have to do that, but back then, we got respect as much as we gave it (I was HS back then).  I also found some old pay stubs from when I was a tier 1 and just getting into the routine.  I now make 1/6 of what I did wh ...

What I've Seen Since Leaving MT
May 01, 2012

I recently left the MT field but am in a position where I have to review medical records daily. I've come across mistakes that make me question where they came from... was it a VR report that an editor didn't catch... was it a transcription error... or was it a doctor error. Some of the things I've come across were a statement along the lines of "would've healing well"... I figure this was supposed to be something like "wound is" healing well. I came across a discrepancy ...

To Those Leaving MT
Sep 13, 2012

Curious, as to those getting out of MT, where are you going? I am soooo dissatisfied with this profession today. My wages are half what they were hourly only 4 years ago (VR for me is not profitable). The account specs get more and more complicated and you have to work on at least 5 or 6 accounts to keep work. Add in the hard to understand accents (I mean can't even understand the dictator's name half the time) and the left off demographics, and it is a recipe for low, low wages. I liv ...
