strategies in job searching for a new MT grad - ph

Does anyone have any strateges for job searching as  new MT grad?  I am willing to do general transcription work.

Strategies - All Ears

1) Keep a spreadsheet showing where you applied, their email, their website, whether you tested, submitted a resume, online app, or simple contact form and the dates you did these as well as the responses. A lot of websites look alike as many use the same stock photography.

2) Pay attention to resume submission instructions. If they say NO ATTACHMENTS do NOT attach your resume, but paste it in the email. If they say attachments are okay, then you may attache.

3) Keep your resume to one page only. Emphasize your education and what you learned and provide a list of the references you have on hand. Keep your fancy fonts and formatting for ones that you mail, pasting all that into an email is a waste of time because it will look like crap.

4) Apply to as many places as you can find. Do not limit yourself to the big nationals, as you are less likely to be able to find work with them. Smaller companies tend to have more openings for new grads and are more willing to invest the time and energy to train them. I applied/submitted/tested/filled out contract forms with over 350 companies by the time I was done. It paid off. You can find smaller companies by googling terms like "Medical Transcription LLC" or "Medical Transcription Inc" or "Medical Transcription Corp." or "Medical transcription Co." plus putting verbiage they might have on their websites like, "Accurate medical transcription", or anything else that comes to mind.

5) Do not fall for scams where they tell you you can get started by paying them money. Or work for free to see how you do. Or that you aren't quite trained enough for them, but if you only take THEIR course, you will be ready and then they will hire you.

Good luck!

What do you mean by "contract forms?" - st

I've been very confused when trying to do searches, too, with the terms "contractor" and "self-employed," etc. How do you figure out which you should be? Is it dictated by the company? Should I wait to get a business license, for example, or is it better to have that stuff in line already? Thx for any help. Hope you don't mind my tagging on, ph.

Contact, not contract, forms - All Ears

Some websites have no career page, no email address visible, nothing. What they usually have instead is a contact form, that is really meant for clients. You may think it's a waste of time to fill that in asking for them to consider you for employment, but it isn't. I got a few responses based on filling those out!

An independent contractor pays their own taxes, sets their own hours, etc. An employee has their taxes withheld by their employer and does not get to choose which hours they work, they have to work a set shift.

A lot of the bigger companies are moving back to employee status because they got in trouble or fear getting in trouble with the IRS, since their independent contractors were being told which hours they had to work, essentially being treated like an employee without the perk of having the company contributing to your social security tax. Big no no. Smaller companies pretty much stick to the IC status, since lots of them do clinic work where the TAT is 24 hours, allowin their contractors to set their own hours. They have to be very careful not to give you software or equipment, because that means you are an employee. So they will "lease" it to you instead and waive the fee to get around that.

As far as a business license, I think that is usually only for people who charge sales tax, but you should check your local ordinances for that, as it can vary.

HTH!

For goodness sakes: Get a decent email address! LOL

Make sure your email address is completely associated with your name and you fill it in so that it shows your name. You want to be CREDIBLE with your email address. Don't use something cutesy like "iluvcats@xxxx.com" or even "nutotype@xxxx.com." Use your name.

You want them to remember your name!

Bear in mind that planted errors are being utilized to weed you out. (You are being told it is so that you become a better MT). So, if you decide to stick it out and learn the Nuance system of scoring reports, here are a list of the things I know they watch for when planting errors throughout the reports. I think we have to stick together, so here ya go!  (Wish I had had a QC share this with me):  Things to watch out for:  medication allergies to prescribed medications (we shoul ...

The patient has a few-month history of thigh pain and numbness.  Overall, I suspect the symptoms are likely secondary to radicular origin associated with his L4-5 spondylosis with foraminal narrowing.  However, other causes including meralgia paresthetica or diabetic s/l amioxi should be excluded.   I appreciate any help you guys can offer!  Thanks :) ...

Recent MT Grad.
Oct 26, 2009

I am a recent grad of Allied Medical School's MT program. I am signed up for an AIM internship. I am wondering about the long wait to get started working. I am a Registered Dental Hygienist for 20 years, and my education in this field completely prepared me for the "real" world of work right after passing the Boards.   I am very disgruntled about my on-line MT training and now, seemingly, non-existent internship.   Advise and stories appreciated.   From Vermont, ...

MT Grad W/SUM Program Eight Yrs Ago
Aug 11, 2010

Eiight years ago I took a transcription course through a local school that offered the SUM program.  It was intensive training for nine months and earned a certificate for completing the program.  I went to work for a local hospital and transcribed doctor's dictation; which included ER, radiology, psych, and scope reports.  Plus various reports that came accross overnight, I worked the 3-11 pm shift.  I did this for eleven months, until the hurricains hit Florida and fo ...

New Grad MT W/ IC Questions
Jul 16, 2011

Hello, MTs! I recently graduated in June with high honors (3.90 GPA) from EvCC's MT program. I just started to look for employment, but I am having a difficult time finding a company who will take a chance with me. I knew how hard it was going to be prior to school, but I didn't think it would be this hard. I worked my hardest thinking I might have a higher chance if I graduated with a high GPA. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case for me. I have applied to 6 companies sin ...

Can A New Grad Pass The CCS, CPC? I Just Did
Jan 08, 2012

Someone just asked, so I'll answer.  Yes, it is very possible.  I graduated 1 1/2 years ago from Andrews School but then waited to take the exams (personal reasons). I just started back on track to get the credentials.  I passed the CPC this fall and passed the CCS this week.   Even with the long delay between the end of school and my credentialing exams, I passed both on the first try. I have NOT worked a single day as a coder.  I am ...

Recent Grad Seeking Job
Jan 12, 2010

I just finished my MT course, have been looking for a job, but without experience no one wants to hire me.  Where do I get the experience?  Is there any tutor/student jobs available so that I can get the experience and use the skills I just learned?  I have Express Scribe, my own foot pedal and medical dictionary and other sources at my fingertips!  I am ready to work and need a job by the end of the month.  ...

Severely Frusterated New Grad
Sep 07, 2010

I have been a new grad since July 2010 and have been actively looking for employment since May 2010. Everytime I see a posting for a job that requires 2, 3, 6, 7 years experience, I just want to scream. If there is such a need for experienced MT's, then why don't some of these companies train a new MT??? Train a fresh brain, shape them to work for your company? I have several friends who were considering a career as a MT but have already advised them to never do it. I am starting to wo ...

Hello All!  I need some advice from the experienced coders out there.  Roughly 3 years ago, I graduated Andrews successfully (by a miracle)! During the course of my schooling, I had several life events which happened and I just tried to get through school as best as I could.  I was so stressed out by the time I finsihed due to working, taking care of an ill family member and having 2 special needs children, I never got around to taking my certification exams.   Things have s ...

Job Searching
Dec 28, 2009

I have been recently sending out my resume along with inquiring whether certain companies I am interested in are currently hiring.  About 90% have not had even the courtesy to acknowledge receiving the e-mail.  I am wondering if anyone also recently looking has had this problem and if anyone knows if companies not hiring generally keep this info on file or does it make sense in a month or two to recontact.  I can certainly tell the market has cha ...

Keep Searching
Jun 23, 2011

As I was reading through a lot of the depressing posts I thought I would share my experience. I have been an MT for almost 4 years. I was with the same company for almost 3 as an IC. I worked part-time to stay home with my kids. I completely agree with others about how hard it can be with the being in work mode all the time and the ups and downs. At the time I wasn't the sole provider though. However my husband got laid off the beginning of this year and I started to look for full-time ...

When Searching For A New Employer

Check with the BBB.  They shouldn't just have NO activity, but be part of the ongoing audit, not just boast they have had NO activity.  Heck, I have had no activity!!!  It is only as good as what is submitted. You may have been in business 10+ years but screwed people over 5+ years of that time.  If no one reports you, the activity continues.... Watch RIPOFF reports.  They do not lie.  Unfortunately, not enough people file these reports so some of us are ...

Job Searching And New At IC And Testing.
Feb 28, 2013

I know these things have probably been covered before here, but could someone please give me some general advice on what it is to be an IC?  Do you just send the IRS a quarterly payment and that's it?  What about Social Security and matching?  I have always done my own taxes, but I am in new territory here and probably will need a tax preparer now, but until then..... Also, when testing for companies, I find I cannot use my foot pedal with some.  How can I do that?  ...

New Grad Medical Transcription - I Worked Hard ....
Aug 13, 2010

I am a recent graduate from medical transcription school. Yeah, I know, big whoop. Actually it was for me, since I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to happen. Why did I do this? Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time and, like anyone else who has never tried it, I tought medical transcription would be a lot easier than it is. My I'm-So-Excited Factor: I have no stars in my eyes. I know it will be hard to find a job and if I do, I won't make much until I get a lot bett ...

Is it me or is this more of a pain recently? Seems like the specialities are not listed and instead it just says medicine so it is really hard to find some doctors, and the search by just specialty just doesn't work anymore?
